Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
Derivative
Took my nephew to see this and we are, like most sentient beings, ardent admirerers of the original. There was a good deal of quality cinema going on here, but let's be real - this was way too similar to the original. It was like a bunch of execs were sitting around the table with a checklist. Okay, we need chimneysweep character. Got it - he's a lumineer or whatever they call it. (Ooooh, painfully bad accent from the Hamilton dude sorry to say - embarrasing). Now we need a spooon full of sugar-ish 'clean up is fun song'. I know, let's have them wash themselves instead of cleaning up their room. Ughhhh. A straight up remake would be less derivative, dog. Keeping it real.
Ascension (2018)
Best Sci Fi Horror at Cinequest 2019
Saw this at Cinequest Festival in San Jose / Redwood / Silicon Valley. Didn't know what to expect but found myself sucked in from the start. The film showed a respect for its female characters, all strong performances, in a way we still dont' see enough of these days. It was a slow burn that got uber intense by the end. Thought the visuals and digital effects were pretty out of the box for this type of movie and aesthetic-wise, I would could probably best call it the love child of Virgin Suicides and Enter the Void. Which is pretty cool if you think about it cuz neither is sci fi or horror. But it felt natural to the story. Still find my mind wandering off to this indie flick's weird and artful cliffhanger ending and really really want to know what the hell happens next.
