20 Days in Mariupol (2023)
A must see
20 Days in Mariupol is definitely a must see, even though it's a hard watch. Mariupol used to be a beautiful Ukrainian city by the sea with over 100 000 inhabitants before the russians sieged it and razed it to the ground.
I deeply regret I didn't have a chance to visit it before it was destroyed; I know it's pre-war story only from my friend who spent his childhood there and lost his family and house to a russian bomb.
The atrocities the civilians of Mariupol had to survive during the russian siege are unimaginable but the film does its best to tell about those people and their fates with respect and truthfully.
I wish everyone watched this documentary and never let such horror happen again anywhere in the world.
Pryputni (2017)
Beautiful and wistful
I didn't expect much but I found myself completely captivated by the film. There's no grand plot, it's a very down to earth story about ordinary people, but it's shot very poetically, the surrealistic scenes are mixed with the everyday rural life in a small Ukrainian town. The cinematography is beautiful and the soundtrack is mesmerising. It gives a sort of Kusturica vibe but in it's own fashion.
Once Upon a Time in Ukraine (2020)
Tarantino would have liked it
Those who are not used to irony, homage and a little bit of absurd probably won't enjoy it. But with the right attitude this movie will be a fun watch. The acting is on point, the fight scenes are not bad (or bad when they are supposed to be), and there's not a dull moment in the pace. And special thanks for the soundtrack, including Ukrainian funk.
