Sanju (2018)
White-Wash on Sanju's Imagery!
Biopics are tricky. Especially if the Biographed is alive and kicking. Cox he/she will have a point of view on the portrayal. Director will try to balance the POV and the entertainment quotient, but the audience expectations are something else.
in Sanju, even before Audience could raise their verdict, the makers shut their mouth (set the expectation) by giving explanations of story revolving around father-son relationships through two important phases in Sanjay Dutt's life. No. of Girlfriends was a marketing gimmick to pull the audience, but cleverly by-passed some of his key relationships in the movie. Oh Sorry! I forget its only a father-son relationship. A subtle explanations was exhibited for all his misdeeds. But Father always pulled back his Son to the correct light.
Having our mouth shut on the story-line, as a review we are only left to talk about performances. Which was stellar by Ranbir Kapoor. And a delight by Vicky Kaushal.
Must watch for them!
Lust Stories (2018)
More than just Lust
Lust or Sexual desires is just a hook/context around which the 4 stories are based. Directed by 4 different directors, Each story otherwise belongs to a different genre and a treat to watch
1. Anurag Kashyap- 6/10:: a 30s something Woman dealing with physiological issues. Indulging In extra marital sex, she is possessive yet non-committal, bossy yet vulnerable at the same time. A typical Kashyap forte, leaves the audience wanting to know if the women ever gets mentally balanced.
2. Zoya Akhtar- 5/10:: Its a modern take on Kamasutra, with the maid having to taste THE Master first, before his bride. Starts off with lust and ends with mixed feelings. Had expected more from Zoya.
3. Dibakar Banerjee- 8/10:: Two Non-Commital Men, One headstrong woman intertwined between their friendships and extra-marital affair. Complicated but dealt with poise, making no noise.
4. Karan Johar- 9/10:: Surprise package. In truest sense, this is THE Love Story of the series. Wherein an arranged married couple manoeuvre through lust, desire, family, love to finally discover respect for each other. It falls nothing short of sensitivity, humour, emotions except the unnecessary falling -pallu thingy. Hence cutting short by 1 point.
Veere Di Wedding (2018)
5 points for what this movie taught me..
5 things to learn from Veere Di Wedding
1. Be Rooted: However much one may be sophisticated, donning the luxuries and living in the upper spectrum of the society, one must always be desi in thy taste. Like digging into our desi brands Amul Ice-Creams, Bikaji Bhujias, and uttering only sadak-chaap gaalis.
2. Live Life king-Size: Splurge in the designers outfits, make impromptu international-travel plans, take bikaji along, dip into the infinity-pool, slosh away your worries with friends. For everything else there is HSBC credit card. Apply for it.
3. Don't Worry, Be Happy: Every character in the movie seemed troubled except the one and only one Carefree- Underdog-Chichora, 'Bhandari', who has all the fun throughout. Give-a-Damn, Care-a-damn!
4. Keep making mistakes: Even if it causes lifetime addiction.
5. Vocabulary Improvisation: Did you know words like 'Veeres', 'Wast Delhi', ' Charmsukkh' and many such frivolous ones before?.. Must learn coz knowledge is power!
Gold (2018)
An average affair, could have been better!
Cholbe Na.. Cholbe Na.
Akshay Kumar's flawed Bengali diction.. cholbe na cholbe na..
Mouni Roy's equally flawed and garrish mannerism. Cholbe na cholbe na..
An impromptu Punjabi gig from a bong? When do ever seen that?? cholbe na cholbe na.
However, with all its inauthentic cultural rendition, Gold does builds up the adrenalin rush, manoeuvring through British suppression and oppression , freedom and partition, making, breaking and remaking of the Indian hockey team, politics: external and internal. There is no zilch in the drama, which keeps one engaged and emotionally moving throughout. And as a proud Indian, you can't help but stand for The Team's triumph and national anthem at the end.
Great attempt, could have been better with crisper detailing.
However, in the sports movie genre, I'm yet to see anyone surpassing ChakDe India.
October (2018)
Hope against Hopes.. One Time Watch!
This movie in its real sense is a portrayal of Goodness of an Eccentric Mind.
Generally speaking this eccentric-mind protagonist makes stubborn decisions, however illogical/impractical they may be at times. And works towards it relentlessly, come what may.
E.g he was decided to be dissatisfied with his job, he ensured he was irritated and arrogant with himself and others around.
His action/reactions thereby left people around him with annoyance and the Question "Why does he behave like that".
Similarly, when he decided to empathise with his Colleague in Comma, (a case of hopelessness) he gave his complete energy towards nursing her back to life... Faithfully and Unconditionally to the extent compromising his career.
Yet again the question lingered "Why is he doing so much for a casual-colleague?"
However his actions/reactions in this phase brought out his goodness and left people with adoration.
Soojit had once shown eccentricity in its loud form in PIKU. And this time he has chosen Subtlety. Commendable as ever. Characters well sketched, Performance par excellence.
But... a Big BUT, the movie leaves an incompleteness, disappointment and hopelessness..
Perhaps.. we want to see Hopes getting fulfilled.
Could it have been tailored? Not Sure.
