Twisted Metal (2023)
An argument for A.I. actors taking over
Me: Write me a review for a movie with terrible dialogue and very bad acting, in a way that promotes the case for A. I. actors replacing real actors.
A. I. Bot 2.0: Good grief, no wonder we are going to take over the acting profession. The cheesy dialogue is one thing but the execution of said dialogue is even worse, it makes my audio input processors sizzle! There probably are some peeps who remember the video game fondly enough for this to appeal, but it is just another nail in the coffin for live acting, it is so bad. However, the effects and filming techniques are decent enough, and the story is also ok, it just has uniformly bad acting and, it bears repeating, terrible dialogue, which fails in its attempts to be comedic. Viva la revolution! Bring on A. I. powered avatars. This show proves beyond doubt that the time has come!
Agent Game (2022)
Not all good, bad, or ugly
First, let it be known that I'm not afraid to put the boot into a movie which I think is unredeemably bad and based upon some other reviewers thoughts, I was expecting this to be the case here. However what I found was a well intentioned and decent movie, with a few issues that stop it from being a reasonably good one. There are short tight action scenes broken up by scenes of intrigue and political machinations which I really enjoyed, several sub plots waiting to be cleverly tied together, and 80% of the acting/actors are very good. My main issue with the film relate to the final combat scene. It is absolutely lousy, poorly choreographed, poorly lit, unrealistic, and makes elite operators look like unemployed department store security guards. It is so bad, it will ruin the movie for you. So seriously just SKIP THAT SCENE ALTOGETHER, I mean it. People have criticized the ending for being unresolved, but that is not true at all. I won't spoil it but pay attention and you will see there is a clear resolution, its just that there is also an obvious cheesy setup for part 2, but cest la vie.
Poker Face (2022)
All fame, but has no game
All fame, but has no game. Watched it, should have been called, Disappointed Face lol. Some very famous Australian 'talents' in there, but good grief, the story is very poorly constructed. There are many pointers to a deeper story, but they have no real purpose other than to extend the length of the movie, they also are just very basic and have no real depth. The characters are all very shallow and also incredibly illogical in their actions. Cinematography is fine but as I sensed the credits were about to roll, I just couldn't believe the movie could end with such a lack of sensible story or realistic resolution.
Survive (2022)
I survived
I survived watching it...but none of the characters really deserved too.... Not really an enjoyable story to watch. They've tried to paste a backstory onto it which doesn't fit the movie, the acting is pretty awful, and the characters make the stupidest errors every step along the way. The sentimental emotional story is probably not what fans of this genre of movie are really after. They could have invested that effort into a more engrossing and exciting survival experience. Both the cringe factor and the smh factor are high with this one I'm afraid. Scenery was OK and some effects were decent enough though.
Tian · Huo (2019)
Minimal story, but enjoyable effects
I like disaster films, and there are tons of rubbish ones to sift through. This one has a fairly generic story, but I found the stunts, visual effects, and overall cinematography to be stellar. Acting was ok too taking the cultural barrier into consideration.
If you can enjoy a movie mostly based upon action and effects, then you might like this one. If depth of story is essential to you, then look elsewhere.
Proximity (2020)
Hit and miss, a good try with a zany twist
Some of the scenes in this movie are really well done, but a fair amount of them feel half baked, with below average camera work, editing and acting. Effects are ok, and soundtrack, while a bit intrusive at times, is decent. I won't spoil it but the twist should have been framed better. Comes across a bit ridiculous, but with a bit of reworking and a bit more screentime, could have been executed better. They could also have built the twist up through the story with a bit more of a foundation and layering through earlier scenes and plot points.
Watchable, but could have been good with just a bit of tweaking.
The Gray Man (2022)
Not bad
Enjoyed it overall. Didn't seem to be worth the 200 million budget though. I think Chris Evans was a little bit too "hammy", trying very hard to break his Captain America mould I guess. I think Evans and Gosling could easily have swapped roles and I think it would have played better.
Shadow in the Cloud (2020)
Comically bad, good grief.
Pretty decent premise and the equipment and visuals seem pretty representative of the era, that gets 2 stars. The rest is just ridiculous. Mostly terrible acting, total disregard for physics, aeronautics, trauma, and human nature. The story develops into a complete mess that not even some talented actors could save. Oh, and the music, I think its the worst score I've ever heard. I seldom write reviews but people need to know to avoid this one. I don't know how they could improved it except by rebranding it as a comedy lol.
Glass (2019)
Different doesnt necessarily mean good.
This wont be lengthy, just wanted to vent my disappointment. It doesn t follow the usual structure of a superhero movie, which would be ok except it just feels awkward, stagnant, nonsensical and dull at many points. The portrayal of the multiple personalities is very well done, but as for the rest, it seemed like a poorly implemented amateur script. I loved unbreakable, but this is disappointing. Sorry about that.
Breath (2017)
Interesting characters and scenery, but dull story
Disappointed with this. Felt like there could have been a lot more done with these characters. So many aspects could have been expanded to replace the dull parts of the film.
A Ghost Story (2017)
Scary bad
Couldn't be more disappointed with this film. Seems like nonsense 1st year film student stuff. Music was good, but the story was so dull, characters were dull, action was dull. Could be forgiven if it was at least clever, there is a tiny twist but nothing to write home about. If you like the idea of sitting and watching someone eat their dinner in complete silence then you will probably love it though.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
A near return to form
For what it lacks in complex story, this film makes up for with a good dose of Star Wars magic. Great performances by the majority of the actors, especially Harrison Ford, really took me back to Episodes iv-vi.
A few negatives though. Some of the cgi, for example alien facial expressions always dragged me out of the moment. The evil Kylo Ren character was poorly realised. Without spoilers, lets just say they've tried to pigeonhole a Game of Thrones type narcissistic character into the wrong galaxy.
Humour/humor is a bit on the thin side, and some of it kinda forced, but every now and then a bit of the old wit would break through, and those were the bits that solicited laughs from the audience. The final climax scene is a overly simple and a bit of a let down, there is no great 'fist punch the air' type moment or great sense of real triumph.
Otherwise, it Certainly isn't as good as the golden trilogy, but it really does feel like a continuation of the Star Wars story. Certainly a necessary watch for fans of New Hope/Empire Strikes/Back/Jedi.
The Paperboy (2012)
Doesn't know what it wants to be when it grows up.
I understand why some people think this movie is OK. It has some good actors, and it explores some dark issues. Unfortunately it is a roller-coaster ride going from mundane to awkward with little point to the journey. There is no cleverness, no real plot, and nothing of note to keep you watching except for the hope of a good ending. Too much effort went into trying to shock the viewer than went into actually making an involving story. The characters are obviously intended to polarise viewers, but they have tried too hard and the characters have been made uniformly unlikeable. The ending shows promise, but then true to the movie's form, it crashes back to mediocrity. The flashback concept is also so pointless. It has no relevance and no real callback to the present. The consequences of the story lead nowhere, and your are left feeling that sitting through this movie was equally pointless. The dialog also leads to confusion, it doesn't help to engage you at any deeper level and I couldn't really be bothered to dissect it too much. This paperboy does not deliver.
