Genius Factory (2017)
Smart Documentary
This is a truly thought-provoking documentary. This guy is a really talented film director (saw a documentary short of his as well). Genius Factory is a biography about the life of a billionaire, Robert Graham, who starts a 19 year long, racist eugenics experiment. It also covers the history of the Nobel Prize Sperm Bank and checks in with the super kids as adults, to find out if the experiment worked. The music is dark and really well done, and the documentary has a crazy cast of characters in it. I'm a big Michael Shermer fan, so it was cool to see him interviewed in this too.
Pre-Drink (2017)
Amazing Peformances
Saw this at TIFF. The actors were so natural in their ability to play off one another. I don't want to compare all Quebecois characters to Dolan's films but I truly felt like both of these characters could exist in his films. Such strong instincts and nice, neat cinematography, punctuated by coloured lights and visually rich production design.
Pacific Rim Uprising (2018)
More of the same, less of what you wanted
It's beyond me how you could make robots fighting other robots and robots fighting giant monsters boring, but dammit, this movie pulls it off gloriously. And to be clear: I thoroughly enjoyed the first movie, because I really like watching robots fight monsters. True story. Sadly, much like other unneeded sequels, it aims to go bigger and give you more of the same. In the end, this feels like a B movie with a budget of an A movie. I'll stick to Sharknado.
Shlomo Arigato (2014)
Great Documentary Short
I saw this short documentary at a film festival. It - is - hilarious! I always liked the Styx song but listening to this guy talk about the lyrics in such detail is very interesting.
