Great Kills (2023– )

A real winner
2 May 2024
The hitman in this series is comically brilliant, embodying the dark humor that defines my favorite type of Tubi content. I often find myself missing shows with this blend of fun, suspense, and thrill, coupled with a compelling storyline that persists until the final episode. Typically, I skip through many series, rarely lasting beyond the first five minutes, but this one captivated me almost immediately. Despite its imperfections-which are understandable given the budget constraints typical for television production-it is definitely worth watching. The storytelling is notably distinctive, mimicking a documentary format while unfolding as a crime horror series. It's a stroke of genius and clever filmmaking. Give it a watch and show your support!

I had to rewatch this
26 April 2024
Watching this documentary has significantly deepened my admiration for Shannon Davidson and Ashley Shaw. Their personal stories and insights into the complexities of their respective roles have heightened my awareness of the unique challenges and pressures that women face in the performing arts. Their ability to navigate these challenges with such dedication and skill is truly remarkable.

Moreover, the documentary has been an eye-opening exploration of many aspects I was previously unaware of. It transcends a mere narrative about the technicalities of theater and film to offer a glimpse into the rich heritage of this influential work. The details about its connections to The Royal Opera House and the historical backdrop of both the ballet and film adaptations have greatly enriched my understanding and appreciation of this iconic piece.

Brilliant
26 April 2024
Directed by Nathan Catucci, this is an indie psychological thriller that delves deep into the psyche through dreams and nightmares. The film cleverly blurs reality and illusion, captivating and mystifying its audience.

The narrative centers on Dr. Rich Freeman, portrayed by Santino Fontana, an ambitious psychology professor conducting a dream study. He hopes to demonstrate that viewing others' dreams can address psychological issues. As the research progresses, the boundaries between dreams and reality blur, revealing dark undercurrents affecting both participants and the doctor himself.

Fontana delivers a nuanced performance, capturing his character's obsession, which perfectly matches the film's eerie atmosphere. The supporting cast, including Laila Robins and Geoffrey Owens, deliver strong performances that add depth to the story.

Visually, the film is striking. The cinematography skillfully uses contrast between light and shadow to reflect the turbulent journey into the subconscious. Dream sequences are portrayed as both beautiful and haunting, drawing the audience further into the film's unsettling realm.

The screenplay, also written by Catucci, presents a unique premise and explores deep themes concerning the human mind's fragility. However, the narrative sometimes becomes convoluted, leaving some plot points unresolved. Despite this, sharp dialogue and good pacing keep the audience engaged.

Sound design is another highlight, with dissonant tones and abrupt changes enhancing the tense, unpredictable atmosphere of the dreams, enriching the viewer's experience.

"Impossible Monsters" shines in its thematic exploration, addressing ambition, research ethics, and the effects of unresolved trauma. These elements provoke thought about the protagonist's moral choices and the pressures driving them.

Although the film's climax feels rushed and some character arcs are underdeveloped, "Impossible Monsters" remains a compelling watch for fans of psychological thrillers who appreciate a challenge to their perceptions of reality.

Saltburn (2023)
9/10
loved it
1 February 2024
The movie was quite enjoyable, albeit slightly too ambitious. It seemed to struggle in balancing between an aristocratic setting, lacking the depth found in works like 'Brideshead Revisited' or Alan Hollinghurst's 'The Line of Beauty', and a psychological thriller aspect, which, while entertaining, came across as overly sensational and somewhat lacking in credibility. At times, the plot developments were so outlandish that they were more amusing than serious. Saltburn was on the verge of being a masterpiece with its wealth of excellent content. It's still a worthwhile watch, despite some superficial elements and a feeling that Fennell and the screenwriter didn't fully explore their characters, choosing sensationalism instead. Quick's portrayal of a sociopath was intriguing yet not entirely convincing, but the film was still an enjoyable experience overall. It has more strengths than weaknesses.

Fast Charlie (2023)

Nostalgic Throwback
1 February 2024
Fast Charlie' hit me with a wave of nostalgia. Like a throwback to the classic action movies of the past but with a fresh twist. The film has this vintage vibe, from the choice of music to the way scenes are shot, reminiscent of old-school crime thrillers. Brosnan fits into this world seamlessly, almost like a nod to his earlier roles, or maybe standing on the shoulders of those roles. There's a familiarity in 'Fast Charlie' that brings back memories of sitting on the couch, watching action heroes take on the bad guys. Yet, it doesn't feel dated. The movie balances its nostalgic elements with contemporary themes and visuals, making it a unique blend of old and new. It's a film that can be appreciated by fans of classic action as well as newcomers to the genre.

I thought this was a very well done indie thriller. Not a perfect film but clearly a passion piece. Had a strong arthouse vibe to me. This one deserves praise from a filmmaking perspective. Somewhat of an original take on a multi generation revenge flick and done with a competent cast lead by the director Martin Copping. I though the majority of the supporting cast were strong. I'm giving this 8 stars. It's probably a 7 but I'm throwing in an extra to support good indie film making.

Cinematic

There's so much detail and intricacy in this film I had to watch it twice. Shannon Davidson blew me away with her performance playing Moira Shearer a complex and charming character that gets a life changing opportunity of starring in the Powell and Pressburger classic "The Red Shoes." Steve Exeter took the right approach on making this. Loved the editing, color grading and the set was done precisely to make this feel authentic as possible. I can see why this won the New York Movie Awards. Watch and support this film.

It's entertaining

Anytime i see a Bruce Willis film i rent it and this one is the best one in a long time. The main character's wife is kidnapped and he has twelve hours to get two millon for her ransom or else. He then calls upon his old military ops crew for help. Not a complicated storyline but it's a well made action film that has more then enough to keep you entertained. Not your typical Hollywood movie but it works.

Give credit to Daniel Stisen
20 February 2022
I don't write to many reviews but i just had to for this one. I seen the trailer and the fillm is so much better then what they trailer has to offer. If pure action is what you want, watch this and this is what you will get. It's your typically Hollwood action blowing things up type of movie. Don't look to much into the plot, some of it doesn't make sense but rightfully so. Daniel Stisen did his thing!

This film is so much better then the trailer. Love the build up of the characters and the plot moved fast and didn't drag out. Good amount of jump scares and tension also with a matching soundtrack and decent amount of dialogue. Wish the ending was a little different as it really did surprise me. It's based loosely of a book i heard, yet to read it but this film is totally worth checking out.

As good as the first

I loved the movie, i definitely recommend watching it if you enjoyed the first one. Acting was ok but could do better. People that gave it a low rating probably skipped half of the movie. It's a good weekend movie.

So good
20 January 2022
I unexpectedly found the trailer on YT and I then decided to rent it and I'm so glad I did. The subject matter is touchy and the actress that plays Kathy did an incredible enjoy portraying issues with mental illness. The editing is crisp, the score was fitting as is the editing. I'm giving this a 9.

Intense thriller
19 January 2022
Yes it's a thriller but it's much more then that. There's multiple storylines all mixed together that makes this truly a gem of an indie film. I'm a big paranormal fan so this is right up my alley also. The cinematography, editing and the acting by the children is so on point so I don't really have anything bad to say about this well produced flick. Let's hope for a part two mabye?

Impressive
2 December 2021
Firstly i like how this was beautifully shot in anamorphic widescreen. This isn't the first Doleac film I've seen and again, he's able to accomplish a great deal on an indie budget in terms of production value. The cast was well picked and they fit perfect for their roles and the creep factor is heavy and most importantly the script was impressive. It's a lot deeper then your average hunt gore-fest movie. The score was nicely done to Clifton Hyde's Tangerine Dream-esque which really set the tone for the film. Sure there are things one could quibble with, likely connected to the indie budget but the film still outpaces a lot of major Hollywood fare with budgets I'd imagine to be 30-times higher or more. Good to see independent filmmakers doing their thing and doing so successfully. Check this one out if you can.

A thriller in the full sense of the word
12 August 2021
The tortured FBI agent trying to find some sort of redemption may have been seen in other movies before, but the way this story unravels with the protagonist's phobia of the dark is really unique. What he has to overcome to find the serial killer as well as the ending of the movie it truly makes it different. Some riveting moments!

Wild
12 August 2021
PIG is a subtle, sad, beautiful movie that cut me straight to my core. As others have mentioned, Cage and Wolfe give excellent performances, but imo the real star of the show is the story/writing. It is a nuanced and empathetic look at the loneliness and grief that we all carry inside ourselves; filled with moments of genuine humanity.

Warning: Spoilers
I'm usually into horror movies so this one was a little different, it's basically about an atheist who opens up a portal for satanic forces after he dies from a lethal injection and them comes back to life. Loved it! I thought it was creative though I wish they did better in the editing but hey it was still a solid flick.

I didn't know what to expect but man this is funny to watch. A lot of twists and turns and an unexpected ending. Remember this is a indie film given that it's still well done and a quality production.
