See How They Run (2022)
This movie has a surprisingly large number of bad things in it
At first, this movie looked like a "knives out" replica, which is great; "this is similar to one of my favourite movies, surely it'll be great!" I thought. I was very wrong. This movie is an unfunny, confusing pile of mess with not a lot to redeem itself.
I don't think that I laughed out loud even once during this unfittingly short film. A whodunnit movie such as this one needs its time to set up the characters, the plot, and surprise the audience. This film does all of those, but poorly.
My first gripe with the movie is that it tries to be aware of itself. It tries to laugh at the whodunnit genre, but in my opinion, that doesn't work for a whodunnit and just produces cringe.
The plot didn't make any sense to me. It's hollow and doesn't have a lot to it. The main detective, Richard, is summoned to the murder scene with his constable, stocker, who I'll expand on later, and are tasked with solving the murder of Leo that occured in the 100th play party of the "mouse trap". The plot expands while the detective's interviews with the suspects. The only problem is that the plot doesn't resolve in a satyafying way and is glossed over too fast. At one point, the detective and the constable have that "Ah-ha" moment as they realize who is the murderer, but, not as in a movie that does it well, the overall reveal was very confusing and didn't feel right; same as with the killer's motive. Overall, the plot was uninteresting and unsatisfying.
The characters aren't all that interesting. The only character that has its charm is constable stalker who joins the main detective on his investigation, though, in my opinion, used mainly for a few jokes and not a lot of substantial plot points.
Another annoyance in this movie is the "split screen". Every couple of minutes you'll feel as though you're playing a two-player video game with your sibling; The filmmakers have an unhealthy obsession with splitting the screen to two or more different shots. This does nothing to enhance the watching experience or to set the tone of the movie and was just an annoyance.
I will say, the movie have some charm, like the supporting characters, which the casting of a lot of them is actually pretty fun and adds to the enjoyment of the movie, but does not do close to enough to redeem this movie in my eyes.
To conclude, this movie isn't worth your money. It tries to be something different, and instead I'm spending too much of the movie rolling my eyes at dumb jokes or cringy moments. Disappointing.
3/10.
Boy Erased (2018)
Emotionally touching but the story sucks
I think theres a lot of potential with the theme and the general story, but the story is boring. Nothing seems to be related to anything. Example: there was a scene with Jared and another boy sharing a bed, this scene's only purpose is for Jared to say in conversion therapy that they just held hands. You could have erased the scene and the movie will make the same amount of sense.
Generally I think the movie is fine. The acting is pretty good and the story is emotionally there. The only problem is that a lot of scenes could have been removed because they don't contribute anything for the plot.
Sidenote: the movie is extremely depressing. Not as a bad thing, just a warning.
