Unexpectedly good
9 December 2023
This movie was actually pretty good. The story is more about the main character's development and arc instead of just focusing on an unrealistic romance. You can tell the budget is similar to the Hallmark movies, but somebody actually read the script before funding it. I won't get into spoilers but there are some twists and turns in the story that keep things interesting, but not in a bad way. It still delivered the standard romcom fare that my wife likes, but it repackaged it with some new elements that made it a solid watch for me. If you don't love romcoms but want to get some brownie points with your wife, recommend this movie to watch on your next date night.

Disappointed
9 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
If you liked the first movie, you probably enjoyed the second one (even though it was completely ridiculous and didn't really justify its existence, but that's a topic for another day). The third one takes a completely different approach. Where the first two are fun and light, this one is darker and more somber, which normally would be fine for a third entry in a trilogy, EXCEPT that the whole point of this series is to be light and fun. There are also some more political things that come up that seem unnecessary. Despite that, the story had potential and I think if a stronger writer/director combo had taken this film, they could've made something that elevated the genre and balanced the darker elements more gracefully. The romance factor wasn't as strong in this one either, with the love story and wedding happening between two random people.

Surprised
9 December 2023
I was forced to watch this, and I hate to admit I enjoyed the experience more than I should've. Not a great movie, but a fun date night around the holidays. The premise is standard, but there's a charm to the characters and the actors who play them that makes this a better watch than it could be otherwise. I know there are a couple sequels out there, but I don't think id watch those. Not the kind of thing that is worth rewatching either, but you could do worse. The last thing I'll say is that I wish these kinds of movies would break away from the formula a bit every now and then. I'm glad we can expect a happy ending with these movies, but a few more twists and turns would help the entertainment value.

Not for me
10 March 2018
If I had to describe this movie in one word, it would probably be "pretentious." But one word doesn't do a movie like this justice as there are many elements that I found to be of high quality. Chalamet's acting is superb. He was nominated for an Oscar for good reason. And while I found the script to be overly long and rambling at times, I can see how some people would enjoy it. And the visuals were beautiful. But even with all that, I found myself bored, checking my watch every few minutes in hopes that I was approaching the end. Perhaps I was just in the wrong frame of mind to watch this, but I had a hard time appreciating the positives because of the way the movie dragged. I'm glad other people are enjoying it.

A less funny version of Superbad
10 March 2018
This is a relatively safe version of the coming of age story. I give props to the writer for the relationship between the lead and the mother as there's an honesty there that a lot of films don't have. Unfortunately, a lot of the other relationships fall into the generic zone. Even so, this was funny enough at times and it was refreshing to get the female perspective on the high school experience.

Solid low budget movie
10 March 2018
For a straight to dvd type movie, this is actually pretty good. Most of the acting is up to par and the special effects were better than a lot of indie movies I've seen. My biggest issue is the movie starts off slow, but eventually it picks up and the ending made it worth watching. Other than that, this was better than I expected from something so low budget.

Predictable, but still enjoyable
10 March 2018
I've heard a lot of people talk about how shocked they were at certain elements of this movie, but that wasn't me at all. From the opening scene, I had a clear direction of where the movie was going. What did surprise me was the fact that the predictability of the movie didn't ruin it for me. The acting was solid, the writing was even better, and there was a very strange Twilight Zone vibe throughout that kept me engaged. The ending for me was really rewarding after all of the suspense and build up (even though I knew it was coming). I'd give it a 7.5 if half ratings were allowed.

Good movie but wish there was less hype
10 March 2018
I ended up watching this a few weeks after it came out so the hype had already come and went. I'm glad I waited because I would've been disappointed after the initial hype train. I ended up really liking the movie anyways, but it wasn't a 10 out of 10. Interesting sci-fi elements and really cool to see something that felt new. I would watch it again in theaters, which for me is the real mark or a good movie.
