Ófærð (2015)
great season one, even greater season two
Season one was unique but really couldn't be replicated, so the writers expanded the second series to address issues beyond Iceland, topics also addressed in almost every other classic Scandinavian noir series before this one. It's not "pc", it's good writing.
Charlie Says (2018)
Beautiful and very sad
This is a masterpiece, though it may take a decade or so for most people to realize it. The actors in both lead and even the most minor supporting roles are tremendous. The script is well researched and believable. This film is about Leslie Van Houten, Patricia Krenwinkle and Susan Atkins, not Charles Manson. Is that really so hard to understand?
Les frères Sisters (2018)
Why are great Westerns like this such a rarity?
This internationally made film is the best Western since The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Bob Ford (2005) and The Proposition (2007). It's been a long dry spell. Revolutionary and timeless.
Never Grow Old (2019)
It's an Irish western...keep that in mind
Did you watch Sergio Leone's Italian westerns and complain about their authenticity? If the answer is yes, you should avoid this film. If you are able to let go of your preconceptions about the American West, then you might enjoy this one as much as I did. Sure, it's an odd bird. What's wrong with that?
Howl (2015)
Good werewolf films are hard to find but this is one
Everything ericnolan said: good traditional werewolf story (but original setting), good acting, good direction. Best new werewolf film i've seen since Dog Soldiers.
Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Bonehead Hematoma
Horror with an old West setting can be wonderful: Ravenous is a prime example. Although Bone Tomahawk has a lot going for it (the script, the actors, the photography), the payoff is about as fun as visiting a slaughterhouse. The cannibals are simply ludicrous. They shamble on and off screen like a defeated football team from whatever planet spawned Predator. You would have to be a complete historical illiterate to take this element seriously.
Minaccia d'amore (1988)
The most giallo non-giallo you'll ever see.
I don't get the overwhelming negativity directed at this film. It's quite entertaining and has an unique supernatural premise, with lots of traditional giallo atmosphere thrown in. People die in very giallo like ways. And Charlotte Lewis' energetic performance in lingerie for the last half hour makes up for any disappointment you might feel about the lack of nude scenes.
The Snowman (2017)
Don't fall for negative hype
I'm a fan of Scandinavian noir. Loved The Bridge, The Killing etc. This is a beautifully filmed addition to the genre. Sure, it might have been better as a series with native acting talent, but Fassbender is pretty damn excellent, as is the rest of cast, music and cinematography is first rate, and story is exciting to the end. What more do you want?
Don't be led by the nose by critics who think they are unappreciated film savants.
