Surprisingly watchable retro-gore-fest
1 September 2011
If everyone is being honest then this film was never going to win any Oscars, or other awards of that ilk. However, this borderline fable depicting film does provide just over an hour's worth of entertainment, subjecting the viewer to some fairly graphic violence. When I say "fairly", I mean if you cannot stand decapitations or disembowelments ( no matter how fake!), this movie is probably not for you! Anyone who appreciates the animation used in The Thing and other movies of that generation may appreciate some of the "retro" (or low-budget to some people) effects used here.

Like several other reviewers on here I was not sure whether to laugh/cry/cringe/combination of all three throughout the duration of the movie. In actual fact I did a combination of all three. Unfortunately, most of the cringing was down to some of the terrible script/plot, not due to overdose on gore. The plot could have been developed a little better, without the use of extended (relatively!) and some excessively clichéd monologues. Probably not something to watch with the better half, but definitely worth a shot with the lads and a couple of beers. Rutger Hauer plays his part, along with a couple of other half decent attempts at acting dotted throughout the cast. As the viewer you do feel sympathy towards Hauer's situation and the subsequent actions he takes. The "bad" characters are amply annoying/vulgar enough to warrant their pre-determined fates.

Overall, this movie could have had a little more substance and a few roles could have been cast/performed a lot better. If you like watching a movie which gives your stomach a few knots to contend with, without any significant cerebral involvement, then this film ticks several boxes.

Still Under-appreciated
13 May 2011
I just thought I would write a review as this is the first time I have seen this movie being aired on TV. I did not watch again, but recommend to several friends, Having only watched the film for the 3rd or 4th time a month or two back. This movie is not being aired on a major channel, which is disappointing, although I hope people 'channel surfing' discover this film, as it is, at its best a beautiful film.

Initially, I saw this film shortly after losing a close fried to cancer. Although I can agree with many reviews that the plot is quite predictable, and that both Nicholson and Freeman do not stretch themselves. However, the connection between the two men and their different perspectives on death are really fantastic. As an outsider (close friend) of someone with cancer, this movie depicts two otherwise completely different characters; who only share their terminal illness. I found the bond portrayed between both actors both believable and beautiful.

There seems to be a little scepticism regarding this film ( I think the rating has improved since 2007) I myself saw it many months official cinema release - and with similar scepticism. I finished the movie with a tear in my eye, some of the thoughts of terminal cancer patients revealed. Beverley Todd highlights the distance of those who suffer and family members.

At best this film has touching and heartfelt moments which can be understood by all. It only misses the mark by being an exclusively cancer based film ( although this is not the main subject of conversation); I feel some of the sensitive and most evocative scenes may lightly wash over those who have not witnessed or experienced cancer sufferers first hand.

shockingly predictable
14 March 2006
Fairly amusing storyline, ish. Glad I didn't pay to see this, the plot is paper thin, and really predictable. I wouldn't recommend it even if you love Newcastle, its a bit tragic really..... The acting isn't bad, but its nothing to rave about either. As has probably been mentioned before, there are dubious holes in the plot (ie the player doesn't have a visa etc, he makes it into the team very quickly, chances of being spotted?!) and these make it frustrating at times, on top of the fact It feels like it has been written in about 10minutes, by a ten year old. From beginning to end its fairly cheesy, which is then topped off with a really weak ending, two of my friends left half an hour before the end as we had already worked out what would happen... I stayed, thinking they might have had a twist, but no! If you want to kill a bit of time, rather than wiping your ass, I suggest watching this film, for those of you who want to watch something worth your while, don't bother!
