Funny Ha Ha (2002)
A waste of celluloid and time
If this film really won an Independent Film award it doesn't say much for our directing talent out there. There is not point to the movie and hence no point watching it. I guess one can read some significance into the meaninglessness of post-college life in the US but this would be doing the director an undeserved favour.
Even if one were to accept that he was shooting a low budget movie with no plot and no script what I cannot understand is why the directing was so poor, why create an impression that we were watching a home movie with shaky hands and bad background lighting? Surely, even secondary school students' work is better than this.
It appears that this was simply a private joke and someone released it publicly by mistake. However, it still doesn't explain the award.
A Divided Heart (2005)
Excellent portrayal of a relationship tug of war.
Very realistic relationship triangle (or was it a quadrangular) from the WWII era. A great performance by Susan Prior playing a part of a soldier's wife who had an affair with a US soldier while her husband was away. A tug of inner war ensues as she falls in love with the Yankee (following her sister's footsteps). The viewer is left wondering throughout the movie - will her inner strength prevail or will she leave her husband?
Susan Prior, playing the role of Millie Vickery carries off her inner struggle in a life-like manner, in keeping with the era portrayed in the movie.
A nice moral guide reminder about adultery is delivered through an story David and Bethsheba from the church's pulpit (but it's so brief that it relies on the viewer's knowledge of the context of the story).
The move under-rated through its lack of promotional budget but a nice surprise for those who locate it on the back shelf of a DVD store.
