Megalithic Underworld (2022)
Why the synthesiser noises?????
Interesting documentary featured sites and locations had not heard of or seen anything on before. The investigations they are carrying out on the Austrian mountain site would be interesting to know the outcome. No one knows why people built these things and they didn't place too much conjecture on it which was good. Anything on ancient megaliths I find fascinating and if you do too I would imagine you would enjoy this documentary.
It's great we are still discovering new sites and whilst they may never really let us know why or indeed how we did build these sites. It's always cool just to see the things we did achieve when we were meant to be so primitive. I must say I found the incessant and inexplicable noises thrown randomly about the place distracting.
Anything for Jackson (2020)
Different gripping well acted refreshing horror film
This film starts really well. Absolutely excellent lead couple. Very good acting and script. The production of the film is superb. The story is compelling and is an easy viewing with great progression and a refreshingly different way of showing a fair familiar trope. The leads acting is brilliant and their natural interactions of an aging couple grieving family loss interspersed with satanism and witchcraft makes for a different type of horror film that feels a bit unique.
Strongly suggest this film for fans of horror films.
I genuinely think you will find this film compelling viewing. I heard about this film when it came out. I'm glad I got round to watching it.
Josh crudas who plays Ian is a great actor imho.
The Head Hunter (2018)
For the love of god please sort that bloody window out
This was really enjoyable film. Stripped down minimal story telling with beautiful visual details and nuances. I thought the lead actor was brilliant and watching his facial and physical acting was first class. The concoctions and hocus pocus scenery and set design was quality at making the medieval border land world. Had some great wtf bits which landed this film in the world of horror I guess.
A brilliant visual medieval horror fantasy with not a whole lot of chat.
All of these things told the story excellently and
will definitely be seeking out whatever the people who made this film do in future.
Don't Say Its Name (2021)
Forget its name
This film was not very good. Tbh the main reason I bothered to leave a review is that this film had 100% on rotten tomatoes due to not many reviews being submitted so far. Each review was very high and gave a glowing account. Which is why was so disappointed at the awful acting.story and effects.
I should have taken more notice if the fact that the reviewers and the publications that gave such high reviews on rotten tomatoes were unknown to me and the reason this film looks like a television movie is because it has all the production quality of one.
Do yourself a favour and avoid this film and go for something rlse.
The Dark and the Wicked (2020)
Dark, wicked moody film
I thought this was a good film. It was quite effective horror. Has a broody ever present foreboding. I like horror films and found this rather effective. The balance is well done. The suggestion and the visceral were paced well. There was a couple of genuine creepy bits. Imho this film was worth a watch.
Little Joe (2019)
Modern uptake on invasion of body snatchers I guess
I liked the look of the film and the cast. Had the potential to be a lot more but lost it with the lack of horror of any real consequence to inhaling pollen. It wasn't as if it was going for a more subtle alteration of behaviour it was clear that it wanted to portray a major change in the behaviour of those little joe had infected but it was all a bit tame and as a result lost its way I thought. The sound in this film is bloody awful, this was not understated, subtle or failed to make its mark. It kept spewing a bloody awful racket over the scenes which also took away from the films ability to really maintain interest or feel anything at all about what little joe was doing to people. This film could have been the great horror/sci fi playing with the ideas of the consequences of man messing with the genetics of plants in the attempt to have impact on our consciousness on a mass scale. As the subject is becoming more relevant I had hoped this film was going to be it.

Entertaining sci-fi / minimal horror?
I enjoyed this series a lot. The leads were both great. Mamadouus performance in particularly. The story has been done before in various configurations but the look of it was perfect to me and there was enough parts that had an originality. It was very binge watching inducing and the end of the season tied a lot of the questions and threads together and I hope Netflix commissions a second season I felt they deserve it due the quality of the first season and hope if so the second season can carry on the story. There's definitely unanswered parts to season 1 and so much they could do with more seasons. If Netflix doesn't give the go ahead then season 1 has enough entertainment and worth watching on its own.
Censor (2021)
Great sense of place x time good psychological horror
I thought the premise of a movie censors work and personal life boundaries becoming blurred was good for a horror movie. The lead actress is really good and Michael Smiley is brilliant as always.
The era of vhs tapes and video shops with video nasties was captured perfectly. The film looked good and the pacing of the plot worked well.
Things got a bit muddled at the end but the horror pay off fairly good I thought. Mr Smileys departure was very apt too.
The Blazing World (2021)
Confusing but stylish enough
Not sure what this film thought it was trying to portray. I sure as hell didn't get any sense of what this film was about. That isn't always a bad thing it's just this film annoyed because of it as felt for a first time directing that Carlson has some real directing talent. I'm sure some sort of message was meant to be portrayed, I just found the end feeling I was left with was frustrating. It was pleasing to the eye and some scenes were quite well done, the music was good too. I've no doubt that Carlson will be making some very good films in the future.
The Birthday Cake (2021)
Wow, didn't think would be this bad
I had seen the bad reviews and tbh thought maybe was just because the film lacked any originality, plot, script or a case of seen it all before due to particularly bad copying of an other film.
It would have been a mercy if this was another gangster film ripping off one or the greats.
Instead it fell short of just another generic gangster film, it was just that but crap too boot.
The good cast made it harder to stomach. Had it been full of unknowns then I'm sure would have viewed it less harshly. As it didn't it made things worst. I wanted to think that as it had good cast then would find it enjoyable and the reviews were wrong. I personally found the reviews to be quite true in this instance.
Unearth (2020)
Slow drama, satisfying body horror finale
I found this film was a slow atmospheric depressing drama depicting the struggles of a couple of poor farming families and would have got a very low rating. However it earns its drama/horror title with its last half hour as the rural citizens all got turned into what seemed like grotesque fruiting bodies which I assume was from a subterranean primordial fungus the fracking disturbed allowing them all to breathe in the spores which gave them all a very nasty tickly cough indeed. Whatever ancient biology it was deep within the earth that had them sprouting and oozing, I warrant it was probably best left well alone within earths rocky bowels.
It felt like the slow burn somber atmosphere might yield a nice shiny horror reward and I wasn't left disappointed. Maybe not enough for all horror fans but felt like enough icing on the cake for me.
À l'intérieur (2007)
incredibly sturdy pair of scissors
This film is an unrelenting onslaught of gore.
The opening credits were very unsettling and gave a good indication of what was too come.
The characters were all thinly played out and served little purpose in the film except to be fodder for an outstanding make up and effects team. For a fan of horror this movie is well worth a watch for the gore and sheer visceral nature of the dispatching of its cast.
Ferry (2021)
Great spin off film from a great series
I really enjoyed this film. The series undercover was brilliant. Series 2 was good but didn't get much of Ferry in it. This film was probably a little less interesting if you haven't seen the series tbh. Frank Lammers was brilliant as Ferry and a film about his background story hopefully means there will be a series 3 featuring more of him.
Come True (2020)
Started really well, thought had a very good story and then
I thought this film looked really good and had a very good atmosphere building up and seemed like could have been great sci fi film about shadow people. There was some quite eerie scenes and it seemed at one point was headed in an interesting direction. Shame it didn't stick with it. This was an entertaining well made film, it's an enjoyable watch despite it having a complete wobble and kind of sabotaging itself.
Worth giving it a go, just might feel let down at the end.
The Salvation (2014)
Worth watching twice
I just rented this film thinking I hadn't seen it before. A minute into watching the film I remembered I'd already seen it.
Fortunately I also remembered it was really quite good. That's basically my review of film. Basically a revenge western with some solid actors/actresses acting well. I would recommend this film, it's a very good version of that. If you like that sort of film.
Honeydew (2020)
Great horror atmosphere from a great director and brilliant sound.
Really enjoyed this movie. Its horror with a few good influences yet its own thing.
Milburn has made a first full film debut which is full of craft and atmosphere.
Claviceps purpurea polluting some already probably backwards country folk and turning them into familial cannibals is a purely brilliant concept. A horror where no one dies or spills buckets of blood and gore yet seems to suggest it's just round the corner is good work imho if it has the creeps which imho this film had.
The sound was really well done and made each scene that bit more warped and backward. Mehrmann did an outstanding job with the sound. Milburn is worth watching to see what he does next.
Antrum: The Deadliest Film Ever Made (2018)
Bury your dog in the back garden like normal people
I found this film was ok and the look and feel of the film was interesting. The plot and storyline didn't make any sense to me at all tbh. That doesn't really bother me and can just watch a film for other reasons.
It was an odd film and kudos to the makers for creating this movie. The idea was executed well.
Film looked good, the introduction was executed well. Had the found footage type backstory pre amble. Except it isn't a found footage film. The actual film if taken in the context of the deadliest movie ever made was very far removed from what a horror film fan would expect tbh.
Paradise Beach (2019)
Utter dross
This film was a disjointed mess. The acting was awful, the script awful and the plot was worse than awful. Can't think of much more to say other than if don't waste your 90 mins on this
Peppermint (2018)
Jennifer Gardener is great
Critics slated this film. Not sure why. If you decide you want to watch a generic revenge film as to if it's any good. If you want to watch that type of film. If you do then this film definitely ticks those boxes. Jennifer Gardener going around with automatic weapons killing the bad guys who are responsible for killing her family has great entertainment value imho.
The film follows charted ground for a revenge thriller, as most do. This film offers all the elements you would expect. The bonus of Jennifer Gardener as the lead makes this film .
Cash Only (2015)
Really compelling watch, great actors. Realism
I very much enjoyed cash only. Thought the lead was a good actor and one to look out for. As were the rest of the cast. The writer, director and producer all having roles within the movie felt as if it added to the overall realistic depiction of an area it's community. Elvish character while flawed and being the creator of his predicament had me feeling for his plight and the portrayal of a man trying to raise his daughter well despite the shit she he was creating left me empathising. The ending was satisfying and after nearly being sodimised by a Russian gangster and eating alive by vicious dogs it felt like he may be able to make some better choices in life and atone for his tragic mistake that left his daughter without a Mum.
Becky (2020)
Wow Becky, doesn't do half measure homicicdes
I really enjoyed this film. I'm a horror fan, whilst this isn't horror as such it's more full gruesome thriller, that also another favoured genre.
Someone else commented they know they like a film if it flys be I find this true too. Although there's those films your really enjoying and then you realise you're only half way through. That's one of my best movie experiences tbh.
Whilst you know exactly what your going to get from this film, it is incredibly formulaic and the thriller/revenge plots have been done to shreds by now i terms of anything original. I felt this film had enough to offer to make you not really care for originality. The girl I the lead was awesome and exacted her murderous revenge with gusto and the exacting youthful appearance mixed with this and the bloody despatched of the felons made it visually new and offered lashings of black humoured comedic appeal imho. I found this film a refreshing and entertaining offering to well trodden path of movie type and would recommend a viewing

Only just seen this
I didn't bother with this film when came out in 2014. On watching this film my opinion of Jack o Connell being one of our best young actors is only more confirmed. The film had a good element of tension throughput and was a compelling watch. Just seen jungle land and it was another brilliant performance by Jack o Connell, I am starting to put him in the same league as James Pattinson and Tom hardy.
The confused mess that was Northern Ireland in that period is portrayed well and the conflicts and alliances between various factions were handled well and with authenticity.
Whilst there are obviously still hostilities and problems in Northern Ireland. The period in which this film is set was clearly an awful time for the people of Northern Ireland to live through and the plot being one new recruit to an infantry brigade and his experience on first deployment going terribly wrong and his subsequent encounters with different factions on his route to survival made a very good film.
Ps watch jungle land it's a great thriller with good acting and interesting plot.
Rent-a-Pal (2020)
Great film, really well made
This film surprised me, hadn't read or seen anything about before watching it. It's very well produced and the period setting and direction I thought was really well done. Hard to categorise as already mentioned it's not horror. It's a study of someone who is lonely and already mentally isolated and desperate being hypnotised I guess by a weird video he comes across at video dating service. The acting is brilliant by the main characters. If you like horror films I think there's elements of that in there. Its a really well put together film, it surprised me not read or heard about it. While not a totally new concept it had an originality to it and was very well made and put together bizarre/strange film. I look forward to whatever jon Stevenson does next.
Possessor (2020)
Best sci fi horror I've seen for awhile
I really enjoyed this film. Thought the premise of the story was good and well executed. I liked the look of the film and yes it's gory and if you don't care for that sort of thing give it a swerve.
For me it was on of the best sci fi horrors I'd seen for a good few years. I look forward to Brandon cronenbergs next full length feature film as this was a real treat if you like this sort of thing
Mosul (2019)
This film was a surprise and was an intense pleasure to watch
I clicked this not knowing what to expect. This film starts and runs through in a constant time Frame and grabs you and takes you along. It's possibly the best film I've watched in awhile and the best war film since black hawk down. I saw someone else make the comparison/comment and agreed with the opinion. This film is imho better than black hawk down as the story and emotion of what your watching is far more of a superior film. There was a film called battle of long tan or some such about Australians in Vietnam which was good and captured what it must have been like for inexperienced private's when the enemy numbers and position is far superior to yours and the reality of conflict hits.
Mosul though was totally different and again a superior film imho. The horror and desperation and commitment to wipe daesh out of Mosul by the men of Iraq and their personal/family sacrifices is heart wrenching and the ending is moving in the extreme. There was no unrealistic bullet proof heroes the carnage and loss was real and although this is hands down a war film heavy in the gunfight/conflict scenes the reality of everyone's final breaths being just one second of bad luck away and the tragic loss of the father/leader/uniting presence force is hinted at in earlier scenes and a simple personal compulsion ends the 'hero' of the film. The last scenes made me choke up a bit and the ending could be no better. This film will stay with you a while and really make you think of the sacrifices iraqi forces made in Mosul to rid Isis from their city
