Kod amidze Idriza (2004)
Perfect
I watched it more than 3 times and every time I find another little detail that is so amazingly interwoven in this story. It may look like another story about the war but I actually liked it since it captures the essence of relationships within family and with neighbors.
Although some of the characters are stereotypical but they still didn't cease to exist in reality such as for instance the one played by the legendary Nada Djurevska. We all have one of those neighbors who just cannot resist knowing everything and sticking their nose in where is not wanted.
Also the character of aunt and her way of cleaning to avoid contemplating the life and losing her son are so realistic.
One of the best actors Mustafa Nadarevic in the region brought the character of uncle Idriz to life in an outstanding way and it was not surprising.
Many little arguments between aunt and uncle made me nostalgic and laugh at the same time since they depict the nature of old generation marriages.
She reminded me of my late grandmother.
I recommend this movie to anybody who would like to understand the part of Bosnian culture but also the dynamics within one family and neighborhood (in Bosnian 'mahala').
Revolutionary Road (2008)
Another sparkle lit by DiCaprio-Winslet
Such a realistic portrayal of marriage and relationships in general that it literally hurts to watch. No other couple expect Winslet-DiCaprio would manage to breathe life in these two characters. It is magnificent how slow and how painful life can be when we realise we didn't fulfill something we wanted. I usually pick a side when I watch a movie sometimes consciously sometimes without being aware of it but this time I couldn't blame neither of them. In real life this happens so often, we don't have bad guy- good guy but it just doesn't work due to a variety of intrinsic or outer reasons.
The Age of Adaline (2015)
Simple plot yet powerful message
We spend our lives scared of dying and growing old but in fact we find out at some point that fear of death pushes us forward.
It's a wonderfully written story. Although I am not a fan of fantasy elements but since it shares a great point I enjoyed every single moment of the movie. I began watching it a year ago and I stopped it after 10 or 15 minutes since I just didn't find it interesting. However today it was intriguing and not at all boring which just proves me once again that we have to be in a certain state of mind to enjoy some movies. It reminded me a bit of Benjamin Buttons although it bears no similarity in the plot just the idea - different aging process or lack of it for that matter.
The Family Stone (2005)
Could have been nice but ....
I watched it twice. First time I don't quite remember and I think it did not leave any special impression on me. However the second time I could have liked it but I just cannot go over the idea that brothers 'switched' girlfriends. It is so sick. In the beginning I sympathized with Parker's character. I thought his brother was just being nice towards her and their night out at the bar was just an innocent attempt to relax her and take a bit of burden off of her back. However what was happening simultaneously with Everrett and Julie didn't make sense at all. I am very into romantic movies and I mostly like movies that people give bad ratings. But this one I must agree with majority. First of all I don't get it why they liked each other. That was apparently firs time for them to meet so it makes so little sense they fell immediately. On top of that Julie came as a support for her sister and she clearly stole her boyfriend. Basically sick and wrong. The reason I gave it 6 stars is the family gathering and holiday spirit. All in all I wouldn't recommend it since there are much better romantic movies.
Kate & Leopold (2001)
Modern hectic life meets old fashioned manners and courtship
I loved it as it is simplistic and romantic. I know that is mostly the reason it got criticized. I agree that the end could have been better since it ends kind of abruptly from my point of view.
However what I value in this movie is the reminder of past slow paced life and of course romance. Chick flicks are often blamed for people's desires that are based on silly dreams and scenes from these kinds of movies. But as I see it, we sometimes expect too much from movies and at times they should be just seen as what they are often intended to be - source of entertainment.
That is the main reason I enjoyed watching this movie although the plot was a bit underdeveloped. Because sometimes viewers just need to lull into a two hour fairy tale before going back to a real world.
When in need of 'future/past' romance I will surely come back to this movie.
The Lifeguard (2013)
Slow paced story for those in late 20s and early 30s
As somebody already mentioned you just have to be in a particular place of life to appreciate the movie. It is not the best movie I've watched and I think I would not watch the entire movie if I found it when I was in my early 20s. However I learned to appreciate these type of simple stories. There are no fake romantic dinners and there are no special events happening in the movie. It is just a chunk of everyday life and doubts that surround people after teen period.
Certain silver lining point interwoven in the last scene when she is driving the car and sunshine lightens her face is just what we encounter in everyday lives when we face some difficulties. It is so simplistic yet so powerful.
