Oppenheimer (I) (2023)
10/10
Cinematic Masterpiece
24 July 2023
Christopher Nolan movies have always been an acquired taste. I remember when Inception was released and there were mixed responses from the audience from "Absolutely brilliant" to "What on Earth did I just watch?" I love this about Nolan. His movies are designed to make us ask questions, to make us use our brains. We have become lazy in our viewing of entertainment. We want action packed explosions and everything handed on a plate and tied up in a little bow at the end. This is not that. Acting performances were superb from all parties. It is a theatrical, cinematic masterpiece. This movie is not about Oppenheimer being put on trial. This movie is about humanity being put on trial. It's a movie that needs to be watched more than once, like all Nolan movies, to truly be able to take in all of the amazing creativity, writing, music and acting. Is it essential to view in IMAX? Perhaps not. But, I really think this movie is something to be experienced, not to just be watched. That is what makes cinema special. Cinema isn't just watching a movie, it's experiencing a movie. Oppenheimer in an IMAX cinema was an experience that I am unlikely to forget.

Heartstopper (2022– )

My heart is bursting <3
30 April 2022
I may well be nearly 30 but this was heartwarming and adorable. Wish my 15 year old self could have seen this. A lot of criticism around the acting and I wonder if people would have been as critical if it had been another (because there are endless) heteronormative romantic series. It is interesting to me that films and tv series that are representative of the LGBTQ+ community are expected to be serious, dramatic and heart breaking. We're allowed to have cuteness, clichés and happy endings too thank you very much.

Phenomenal
8 March 2022
A lot of people hating on Elliot playing the guitar but I thought it was beautiful. I think it was particularly poignant as it was the first time for a while that was Rue was able to appreciate and feel the emotion that music and art are able to offer; same with Lexie's play. She wasn't so off her face that she couldn't feel anything. She could finally let out the emotion out, feel it, revel in it and realise that although some emotions can be painful and dark, some emotions can be warm, hopeful and beautiful and they're the ones worth fighting for. Exceptional acting, exceptional writing, music, cinematography, direction, just superb.

Wonderful Trip Down Memory Lane
1 January 2022
I grew up watching and reading this world and it was so lovely to see some of the cast together again discussing the world that they were part of. Emotional and nostalgic. It is clear that they were a family. It is clear that they are truly grateful to have been part of something so magical. They all seem like genuinely decent people, despite the fame, despite the complexities of navigating their own identities as they grew up with the identities of their characters they've turned into wonderful individuals. I forget how magnificent the cast was and how WELL cast all characters were. A lovely tribute to those actors who made the series what it was who have been lost. The world of Harry Potter will be a place that I will always turn to in a time when I need comfort and warmth.

Hans Zimmer continues to be legendary
31 October 2021
What an incredible score. Movies are nothing without the music and Zimmer has composed something wonderful, yet again. I was concerned I'd struggle to follow the plot. I am yet to read the book. My copy sits untouched on my shelf alongside many other novels on my 'to be read' list. Too many books. Not enough time. The cinematography was beautiful. The costumes were rich in detail. The acting was superb. Chalamet stood out for sure alongside Ferguson. I'm excited to see the next instalment. I highly recommend getting the full experience of the rich graphics and incredible score in the cinema. Really is a masterpiece combination.

A great start
24 October 2021
The people in these review comments just want the same old predictable alien storyline where aliens only hit the the USA or the UK and want it handed to them on a plate in the first episode. Go and watch all the other predictable shows if you must. The tension build up in this is fantastic. The cinematography is beautiful. The storyline is complex and character building. I care about everyone I've met so far. I've been on the edge of my seat as peculiar things are happening sporadically. This is unique and interesting to me. Looking forward to more episodes. The xenophobia, homophobia and down right small mindedness from the other reviews simply highlights their lack of intelligence in watching something that is raw and emotion driven within the sci-fi genre. Get a life.

Wow!!
11 September 2021
I've just come out of the cinema and I'm in awe of how beautiful this movie was. It was visually stunning: rich in colour and graphics. The costumes, cinematography and set were outstanding. The music was wonderful. There were funny moments, heart felt moments and edge of your seat moments. Everything that a Marvel movie should be and more. It made me so happy to see the Asian community finally being represented in the Marvel universe. Acting was insane. I absolutely love Akwafina. Go and watch this at the cinema if you can- it is so worth it to see the beauty on the big screen.

Family Fun
19 August 2021
This surpassed my expectations. It was just such great fun and heartfelt with a great cast. Loved the concept of the story. It made me laugh at how much it was mocking games like Grand Theft Auto and the Sims. I highly recommend this. I have been in need of a new "comfort" movie which I love to watch if I'm ill or tired or anxious. This will definitely be my new comfort movie.

Black Widow (2021)

Torn. I liked it but it didn't wow me in the way I hoped.
9 July 2021
I'm so torn by this movie. I mean, I liked it. It was so nice to be in the movies watching an MCU film again but it didn't wow me or give me goosebumps in the same way previous MCU films/ tv series have. I really wanted to form an emotional connection with Natasha and it was hard to- but maybe it's meant to be hard because that's how she was raised and trained?! Maybe it's my internalised misogyny that is making me feel disappointed in another of MCU's female led movies or they're just not doing the female characters justice. I didn't feel this way about WandaVision though- that was outstanding. Florence Pugh was phenomenal- so excited that she's going to be in the MCU universe. I'm still convincing myself that Black Widow isn't dead though. Here's hoping. Overall, it was enjoyable but I think after the successful WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki, this had big boots to fill and it just didn't quite do it for me.

Light and Fun
5 October 2020
Is it the most well written, eloquent, well acted series ever? No. Is it a light watch that is easy to check in and out of with fantastic colours and set design/ costumes? Yes. I enjoyed this in a time where I don't want to be reminded of the Covid Global Crisis, politics, the crap weather and other depressing things going on across the globe.

The characters are quite fun. The storyline is easy to navigate. The set and colours are beautiful. A lot of criticism around the wardrobe on Vogue Instagram but I thought they were fun and pretty.

It's mindless and distracting from reality. Perfect. What more could one want from a series right now?

Eye Opening and Raw
29 July 2020
It honestly disgusts me that people have reviewed this as a "one-sided, PC story". The lack of humanity in these reviews honestly just makes me sick. Yes, this is a fictional programme but this is very much the reality of what goes on in Immigration Centres across the world. They are human beings, children, fighting to survive, to live a better life. Escaping war, torture, rape. You should be ashamed of yourselves if you believe that the way in which people have been treated in these places is acceptable.

The acting in this was outstanding. The difficult position that so many people are put in to decide between what is legal and what is morally right was captured in such a powerful way. I highly recommend.

Superb adaptation
6 March 2020
I've been waiting since I was a teenager to see this on screen. Malorie Blackman's books are outstanding and this really brought them to life. All of the people writing reviews and claiming that it's "PC rubbish" are clearly feeling defensive about the reality of race in this country. I'm excited to see if they create a series for each book! Bravo BBC!

I wish this programme existed when I was a teenager
18 January 2020
I didn't think the second season could be as good as the first. It was just as good. Inclusive, diverse casting is the future! Love love love it! It makes me laugh, it makes me cry. The scene that made me cry and leap for joy was when all the girls were smashing stuff up in the junkyard. A group of women who were different sizes, different races, different religions, different sexualities, different upbringings who were empowering one another and metaphorically smashing the shit out of the patriarchy in that junkyard. I want to watch it all over again.
