There is no Pirates without Depp
28 October 2018
So scrap it and move on. Leave the 5 films as a classic. Don't ruin it like the Star Wars Franchise. Keep Depp and get some descent writers to keep him from being a dragged down lush. He's supposed to be an anti-hero...and Captain of a ship, not what is in the last film. Black Pearl is the gold standard....and Depp needs to still be part of the franchise.

Once again, no story, just bangs and booms.
9 May 2018
Unfortunately, computer-generated mayhem is much more important than character development.

One-liners is not good writing. There was such hope with the Dr. Strange movie and nice writing....but this "Avengers" film does nothing to add to any of the previous characters' story lines...especially Dr. Strange.

It's a jumble, with explosions/death/violence...with little use or reasoning behind it's constant grinding noise.

All the tears shed by actors, had no heart behind it.

It's sad when money drives a movie rather than writing.

Just because something owns Lucas Industrial Light and Magic, doesn't mean it has to be on screen at all times. I thought SE was supposed to be light-seasoning...not complete coverage.

The offering lacks in so many ways.

Sad...had high hopes.

Absolutely stunning...
24 December 2017
You cannot beat a film artist who knows how to use every character, including the topography and the train...to their very very best advantage.

Stellar performances....and keeping in the spirit of David Suchet's version, yet bringing a fresh new angle...it was lovely to watch mastery at work. ed Cannot wait for "Death on the Nile" hopefully they hint at that.....

As Usual, all the money went to Special Effects, not good writing.
23 December 2017
It's a pity to waste good actors on re-runs. If I wanted to watch Empire Strikes Back, again...I'd watch the original. So disappointed in this offering. Much of the dialogue was muddy...and the many characters making sacrifices had no story for them....(The Resistance General for one.)

The lovers' relationships weren't fleshed out, nor was Ray/Solo connection explained properly. It lacked any soul.

Guess you just cannot "go home" again. The well was very...very...very dry.

Absolutely Stunning, beautiful film....touching story.
6 November 2016
I love first films of comic characters when they're made this brilliantly...and it can stand with Iron Man I, and Thor I, as the most delightful popcorn films.

Made me feel like a kid again, and that's saying a lot....since I'm old and wrinkly.

Cumberbatch is superb as are all the cast. The special effects don't bore one to death, as they are not all corridor scenes, but actually "add" to the story-line. (Unlike the new Superman/Batman stuff...zzz)

Harks back to Chris Reeves "Superman" with a purpose in saving lives rather than all destruction.

Well done, planning to see it again and again.

Lucifer (2016–2021)

Tom Ellis is cute as a bug's ear...charming...delightful to watch.
14 March 2016
If the scripts improve this series is a keeper.

So much fun....makes all the "Charmed" Alumni happy.

Good writing, sexual tension...what more can a series want.

Would like to see more about why Lucifer left "home"....and how he got kicked out of heaven...

The real Lucifer, if he exists, could take lessons from Mr. Ellis....

Lucifer needs to expand a bit, from the bar scene, and a few chases after criminals.

Hate it to be just a one-note character....would the "devil" really be stuck chasing one human woman?

Keep this show on, don't listen to the radical religious pundits....it's fun and games.

This film is a fantastic homage to the original story line. Well Done!!
7 July 2013
What a delight to go into a theater and actually have some character development with all the popcorn special effects. This is a masterpiece o film-making, executed with style and finesse. Don't miss this film, it's a thrill-ride. Enjoyed Depp's performance as Tonto, from "old man" back through time to depressed man. It's a tour-de-force, all who are involved should be proud of this effort. Hope there is a sequel in the works. Can't say enough good things about it. Ignore the pimply-critics who can't sit still unless a building is falling over or something catches fire every 5 minutes. This is for folks who like good dialogue with their film. The Native American trade is what should happen to critics, leave them the bird-seed and take the film...it's a keeper. From Benny and June to The Lone Ranger, homage to Charlie Chaplin is very nice...too. Comes full circle.

Dark Shadows (2012)

This film is a disaster, and not an "homage" to the original "Dark Shadows" at all.
13 May 2012
How sad that Burton/Depp decided to "sex-up" this film with breasts, bad actresses, and lousy script offerings. Not one character was worthy of any type of accolade. Some things should be left in the past...and this is one of them.

Sure, you had the basic premise of pitiful Barnabus being cursed by Angelique, but there was no back story of any worth. Josette was thrown in as just a "special-effect" death...with no relationship with Barnabus, whatsoever.

Fast-forward to the future and it's sick/silly. Nothing was funny and they showed every single joke in the trailers. Felt sorry for the "whoosh" from the original cast that got thrown in...and Chris Lee was useless.

The lines of this film were thrown away...and close-ups of Depp's various makeup jobs were sloppy.

There is no excuse for doing a film of this cheapness and calling it after something that was so enjoyed by past generations. Two series are worth more than this mess. Please....save your money and rent the originals...from Net Flix.

See what true story-telling should be, not this lack-a-daisical junky stuff. This will end up being on the bottom of every Walmart bin....for $1 for many years.

It's been a long time since I've been so Entertained!!!
16 July 2011
From the first moments as the music beings to the final credits, this film lost not time in engaging, tying up all the loose ends, bringing a tear into the eye (more than just Snape) and answering questions that the book sorely lacked. Screenwriters captured the highest points of this film, showing that Harry was the hero he was born and bred to be. Every character supported him, kept his spirits up, and filled their special effects magic with eye-popping cinematography.

The IMAX 3-D is not to be missed, the audience is totally immersed inside the hallowed halls of Hogwarts.

Run don't walk to take a seat in your local Imax.

Haven't been this enthused about a flick, since the chariot race scenes in Ben Hur....and Harry Potter beats that, because the "race" goes the entire 2 hours. You leave the film feeling like you were there, standing next to all the actors, living their experiences yourself.

This is a definite don't-miss!!!

This film helped my family understand the disability of my young son....
29 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Back in 1990, my children had been dealing with their oldest brother's disability, and the shunning that came from having a high-functioning autistic sibling *now called Asberger's Syndrome.* They were having difficulties with other youth, going out of their way to abuse them and their brother...and then this film came out.

It was a godsend, their eyes were opened and they saw the suffering of Edward Scissorhands, his attempt to live with a normal family, his dreams of the promised "normal" hands, that never materialized, and the final need for ostracizing, not just for the village, but for Edward himself, and those who loved him.

This film should be curriculum for any parent of a disabled child, who raise siblings with their child and have other children interact with them....to show what could happen in their society of friends...so they may choose people who have wonderful, accepting hearts...who can be around their brother/sister without feeling frightened or revolted. That they begin to understand why a great deal of parental attention goes to the disabled sibling...and the reasons why...protection and training ongoing,

This film is a classic, and I deeply appreciate Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, Winona Rider, cast and crew...for this wondrous cinema...that suffering and shunning happens in life, but people are able to learn from this film, walk away...and become better people because of it. It worked for my family and their friends...perhaps it may work for others.

Don't miss this film
20 March 2011
If you enjoy repartee that is razor sharp, funny, charming and endearing as well as excitement with chase scenes and stunning special effects this film has it all. It doesn't over-play it's hand, it stays within the confines of almost believability and doesn't think it's audience is dim- witted. It makes you think, yet pulls you along in excitement and constant changing scenes that will take your breath away. Enjoy the ride, bumpy, shifting, like watching oil change in a pool of water. Matt Damon and Emily Blunt play off each other like an old married couple...they're sheer enjoyment of the script is catching. Do not miss this film, for the delight in film-making. Even Terrance Stamp is having a great time being heavy...old Zod himself would have been proud.

Buy the 1997 DVD, save your money
18 March 2011
The 3-D is lame....and it's very dated. Aging folks trying to reclaim the magic....just doesn't work. Even when they "sex-up" the women's costumes, it detracts....and the enthusiasm just isn't there. With all the pyro-techniques....the dancing isn't really uplifting. Even Flatley's violinists look like they're phoning it in with "Milly-Vinilly" tracks...and Michael playing the flute....not. Hiring the guy who's shorter than Flatley to play the evil villain...not inspiring. If you've seen it on PBS..you've seen it all. Rerunning something that old dates it to the extreme. Flatley is talented but the rest...just seem exhausted. Even the audience didn't fully do standing ovation. If it's time to retire an old warhorse....retire it with good memories...not this. It's not as bad as "Michael Jackson's This is it.." but is a close 2nd.

Avatar, great date film
21 December 2009
It's got something for everyone, romanticized compassion with love for "Mother Earth" for the gals, and lots of mechanical high-tech blow-ups, blow-outs....for the guys. It isn't too mushy and it doesn't beat you over the head with PC....it's great fun for everyone. Just go for the sheer joy of the paintings....and the special effect worlds...gorgeous. It's story is familiar (A Man called Horse/Dances with Wolves) but updated for the future, when man is heading out to other planets...warnings....about human attitudes.

Horner's music is luscious as usual, with shades of Titanic, Legends of the Fall...and Trek...combined. Worth every penny spent on it. Can't wait for more films of this type....with more story line.

Unfortunately, this was like watching bad surgery....
2 November 2009
CONTAINS SPOILER: Knew we were in trouble when a cut-out of Jackson was used in front of the Bulldozer scene, and the thought crossed...how many times was it used when he was missing from rehearsals. He didn't rehearse with the musicians and seemed upset when they didn't "follow" him, he didn't rehearse with the dancers...just waltzed back and forth while they did all the routines around him. His singing of the songs was many times out-of-tune or screaming/growling...like an aged rocker who should stay retired. This was tiring to watch, bits and clips as if he couldn't get through an entire song without breaking. So they pieced them together....and in some cases he came off a routine wheezing with asthma. A double was used to go through the crashing window, and climbing the rafters or sliding down the stairs...(with face covered.) And the "remake" of Thriller was still in the computer as was the Klatu robot. Three days of rehearsal does not a tour make.

What a piece of Junk
21 October 2009
Have never sat through such a piece of trivial junk, with little to offer but whining and control issues. The fashion industry is run by nobody of any consequence, or depth. They spend millions of dollars to get millionairesses to spend money on junk. This "documentary" was about as lame and boring as watching paint dry. And Anne....and her "necklace" of gems...were also boring. She abuses the only talented person on her staff, her fashion editor/photographer....and seems to get a kick out of pissing everyone off for no reason. The so-called "fashions" look like draperies from a dime store. How she's stayed in business as "Vogue" head is truly mysterious. She doesn't have any eyes to even see. Then they "chop/crop" photos together....showing the phoniness of their subject matter.

Recommend not wasting any money on this film....there are no big reveals...here.

The actors were crippled by the material...
15 September 2009
particularly JoAnn Woodward.

Magnani was way too old for the part...(just don't buy she was pregnant.) She may have been a fascinating actress to watch (say 15 years earlier)...but she just did not fit the parameters.

The script, purposefully gritty, was almost "grab and bash" in it's concepts. Ugliness was thrown in stark shadows and light, with little redeeming action. There needed to be a balance...and it was all dull. The best writing is done subtly (like "Street Car named Desire") rather than slamming with black and white film noir, to get certain points across.

Marlon could sense it wasn't working....he did his best but just could find no reason for it to have any meaning. When his character died, nothing was felt by the audience. It was just one more loss, of characters no one felt any apathy for.

They were all selfish, grubby, static, useless human beings that no one really cared a thing about at the finish.

Even Maureen Stapleton couldn't save it...her character (supposedly the heart of the piece) just didn't appeal, even on a pitiful level. It was a wasted effort....something Tennessee Williams threw together to make money on his earlier successes.

This film is not designed for anyone under age 40....
11 September 2008
Stunning film, about a man who finally "gets it." Years and years of self-indulgence....gone. Years of not knowing the pain he caused, could also be felt. Did his own mortality trigger it? Doesn't it...in every male? Great psychological study of having-it-all vs. really having "it."

Ben Kingsley does a superb job of staying calm and letting his eyes do the work, discretion instead of "chewing-the-scenery." Dennis Hopper is well-cast as his confidant who didn't really know him. Penelope Cruz reminds one of a young Sophia Loren, but was difficult to understand in the "quiet" parts. Deborah Harry, excellent as the "long-time" bed-buddy. Peter Sarsgard as the long-suffering duplicate son....all these folks brought brilliance. Pity the U.S. version was cut to shreds....would have liked to see the "director's cut" on this one.

Nelson (1926)
10/10
Watched this on cable, yesterday
5 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
And was hooked....none of the actors over played their faces and yet their emotions came through and you didn't really need to word cards to know what they were saying....

McCoy was excellent as Lady Hamilton, her husband was also excellent as was her discoverer, it was a "pigmallion" type of story to begin with, then went on to show Lady Hamilton convincing the Queen of Naples to get supplies to the British navy to fight Napoleon, because the Queen was sister of Marie Antoinette and would have been guillotined had Napoleon succeeded in conquering the world.

Hardwick's Nelson was subtle and very strong, especially when Lady Hamilton was "not allowed to attend" his triumphant return party thrown by the royals of England, as they were known to be having an affair. He walked out and went off to the countryside (similar to Edward VI and his decision to abdicate, becoming Duke of Windsor.) The film is classic in all the best ways...actors actually acting, instead of depending on their dull voices to drone along. Such a treat to watch.

Spoiler: Selfishness packaged as ART
28 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Delusional wealthy women running about Paris, grabbing up clothing that wasn't all that. When they finally did wear these pieces specially made for them, from what they saw on the runway, (modified) they still looked ridiculous.

Pitiful people who don't know what to do with their money....filling up rooms with hanging rags of material, the smell of moth-balls must be atrocious....(not in the closets...on the women, themselves.) Waste of effort by the film-maker. Looked like "America's Next Top Model" after they sell the product.

The loneliness of these women, who show up to look at each other in their outfits, is palpable.

They seem like clothing mannequins, themselves....only worth the value of the property....trophies....of the industrial age.

Move over Hyronimus Bosch
15 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This film places you in the 17th century filth, so fully you can smell every smell in the theater. It was beautifully filmed, the cinematographer, costume-designers, set-designers all captured the background of this film. It was like a Bosch painting.

The acting was strong (the British accents were a bit strange, since it was sent in France.) Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman stole each scene they were in and made you believe. Ben Whishaw in certain angles, invoked the memory of Anthony Perkins in "Psycho." He was the total focus and was ably controlled. It felt like he was an "autistic/asberger's" person in a society that couldn't understand obsessive/compulsive/brain-disorders. His sociopathic behaviors hinted at the future "Jack the Ripper" mentalities.

The ending seemed "tacked-on" however, perhaps it was added due to not wanting to encourage the deranged from following after the character's bent. (Similar to Anthony Hopkins' wishes regarding Hannibal Lector.)

Very interesting and well-done film, but not for the squeamish.

The Fountain (2006)

Just wish the film had been "as advertised."
21 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
It purported to be an "Eternal Love Story" so I went to the film expecting something spectacular about two people in love. Was totally disappointed that the film didn't deliver what was promised.

What this film is about, is a man in three life-times (reincarnations?) who decides that the "tree" of life is more important than a relationship with his love. Isabel/Izzy is left behind, while Tomas/Tommy/Tom is off chasing an obsession. Regardless of his being ordered by Izzy to find the tree of life/fighting against Mayans/cancer/memories, the character of Tom cannot see the forest for the "tree." His queen/wife begs for his attention, as she has accepted her own inevitable death, and just wants to share a few moments of quality time with him, (a walk in the snow, a look through a telescope, a read from her journal with feedback.) He refuses because in his hunt for the ultimate cure, his obsession develops, which leaves him with 1500 years of regret.

This is not a romance, it's a morality play. It has some pretty pictures, but the inner core of the script did not tell anything close to a "great love story for the ages." Wish the advertising hype had been honest.

This is a tragedy, Shakespearian in scope. It liberally uses "dark ages Christianity/Eastern philosophical" images, but there is no truth concepts gleaned from the actual religions. It's images are "Kung-fu" meets "2001-Space Odyssey in a culture cliché.

Perhaps it was the lack of funds and the push to finish quickly, that left the film filled with missing pieces of development. One wonders what was actually filmed and left on the cutting room floor or on the script page. Perhaps it could have been much better.

As is, it's empty, devoid, Dante's inferno. The advertising should have told more about it's "Death" themes. But I guess "hooking" an audience was of prime importance. Sad.

A delicate film for those who've loved and lost.
30 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
A well-written, tender loving story of a lonely woman who misses her long-time lover who has died, and mourns him caring more for his memory then her own life. This film is sweetly told by actors who really care for the tale and show it in every emotion they evoke and portray.

Do the dead re-visit the living, does life go on without horrific feelings of guilt and remorse? These questions are woven into a complex piece and answered so skillfully and compassionately, that one doesn't notice the time goes by so swiftly, the audience wishes it could go on forever. Alan Rickman gives a stellar performance along with his "dance partner," Juliette Stevenson. It may be viewed as simply a "chick-flick" but has such depth that even the male persuasion will be moved. Don't miss this cinema.

Stunning performances
11 March 2006
Sumptuous period piece so real, you believe you are in the 17th century. Gritty, immoral and yet a tone poem to the life of an artist. Johnny Depp captured the character of John Wilmot/Lord Rochester so perfectly, showing the depth a playwright/poet gives to his lifestyle. The scenes he shares with the actresses are gems to behold, particularly when he's "guiding" a newly found actress to stardom. He is svengali from a previous age, and you believe that Mr. Depp could direct. It's a tour-de-force of excellence, all players should be extremely proud of the results. John Malcovich, Samantha Morton, Rosamund Pike, Tom Holland, all deserve qudos for their support. It is a work of art not to be missed. Beg, borrow or steal a ticket, but get to this film, before it goes away.

It's sad when a witty, brilliantly written show is lost!!
26 January 2006
So enjoyed the "Book of Daniel" with all the patience-of-Job problems that were shown. Aiden Quinn was special as Daniel, as were all the actors/actresses who put in such good work. It was not harming anyone, people all over the globe are suffering or dealing with these same turmoils, (with "Jesus" at their shoulder encouraging them to make changes, but not forcing them to.)

One hopes that another media company (WB) will pick it up and have the courage to see it through.

The stories were well-written, things were "revealed" and resolved, yet leaving cliff-hangers. Will miss it terribly!! Please bring this "Joan of Archadia" replacement back to the airwaves, with the same writers, producers, directors and actors.
