Debi (2018)
Missed opportunity
When the first trailer of "Debi" came, it really made all of us curious . Cinematography, background score, acting as well as goosebumps were all welcome change in bengali cinema.
The movie starts promisingly but with time it lost direction. What were they thinking? I think the makers were confused between psychological drama and horror. Jaya Ahsan is the producer of this flick so naturally its Ranu's story. She performed well but the screenplay is all over the place. Iresh Zaker as Ahmed Sabet is good but the character is different from the book. Shabnam Faria acted well, but her face off with Misir Ali lacks the required sparks. Finally about Misir Ali, folks this movie does not do any justice to him. Chanchal Chowdhury tried to make a ulcer stricken version of Misir Ali, but his sharp mind is completely missing. We were told that Ranu was not hallucinating after all !
The movie has "The Shining" twin sisters too. Wonder if it's a mere coincidence or lazy writing ?
Sanju (2018)
An average affair
Though he has the legacy of Nargis and Sunil Dutt to pull off, Sanjay Dutt is a star on his own right in hindi film industry. No doubt he has a very controversial life through out, drugs, love affairs, failed marriages, AK-56, his connection to underworld and so on. So why would not any one want to see a biopic of him, being made by none other than Rajkumar Hirani starring Ranbir Kapoor ? Its boxoffice outcome is the answer to that.
As I saw the movie, the way it turned out and shaped, I was disappointed. What a missed opportunity.
The movie started with a declaration (Sanjay Dutt want to tell his side of story) and end with all the explanation (how GOD lure him into drugs, he only took those fire arms to protect his family) and blame game (Media made him a terrorist).
But who is Sanjay Dutt, he never materialized as an actual human being on the celluloid. What he was thinking when he started taking drugs, what compelled him to take AK-56..the scenes explaining these were not convincing. Even his scenes in jail are less emotion more manipulative in nature.
Whats convincing is the letter Sanju wrote to his father, that scene works out extremely well, I guess credit goes to Ranbir. Vicky Kaushal is good in movie (except his make up as the old Kamlesh). Good news is Sanju-Kamli jodi is the only saving grace of this movie.
But Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi disappointed us a big time. They are terrific writers, if they cant give us a gripping Dutt biopic with Ranbir, then who ?
Hichki (2018)
Front of the class - Hichki
Siddharth Malhotra and Rani Mukherji is not a good combination. They came up with an unoriginal script and a cliched movie. I wonder why Rani choose this script for her comeback. Its not dedicated to Tourette's Syndrome, it is just same old wine in an old bottle.
We all knew 9 F were going to be victorious in the end, they are also going to win the "Prefect Badge" too. And so on...
Its not that Rani acted average in the movie on the other hand she carries it on her self though out the end. But that should not be the goal, one should look at the wider picture. Whats the point is doing an excellent performance in an uninspiring movie. She has nothing to prove. Rani was so good in "No one killed Jessica" and even " Mardaani" , that expectations from her are quite natural.
And I am still expecting good movies from her.
Padmaavat (2018)
Glorification of fictitious history
I wonder if the name should be Padmaavat or Alauddin Khilji ki prem kahani ...!
Padmaavat fell short as a story of Rajput King and Queen, but as capturing the madness of Khilji the movie roars. Without a doubt it is the movie of Antagonist.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali put an enormous effort in stylizing the 13th century tale. The production design seems like another character in the movie. Thet set, CGI, cinamatography, jewellay design, costume are worth mentioning.
Shahid Kapoor is too stoic as Raja Rawal Ratan Sing, poor Deepika lost out to Ranveer, yet again after Bajirao Mastani. I just wish Ajay Devgan played the role of Khilji and Aishwarya Rai could turn up as Padmaavati.
It is an one time watch. See it in your nearest theater.
After all renowned historian Amir Khusru is also part of this fictional Khilji history too!
War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
Not a memorable ending
"Rise of the planet of the apes" starts as a fresh air in the world of planet of the apes. Where as the second installment proved to be quite an emotion provoking movie which left me anticipated for the third one,but it is not worth the wait.
Caesar we see in this movie seems different, what went wrong in writing I dont know, but it is not the Caeser I admired so much in those earlier films. May be the writers went lazy and put on a cliched safe choice, another imprisonment leads to another rebellion.
Why not the war as in the title ?
