Shôgun (2024)
Defies expectations
This is not your usual TV series. You have to read a lot of subtitles (no, it never stops), but it's worth it. This goes not as you might think because this series takes plays in a different time and in a different culture with different values to ours and that's what makes it so good. It's unpredictable and shocking and with that truly entertaining! It's definitely not what you would expect from something that runs on the Disney channel! Besides that, the costumes are amazing and the pictures are too. You really feels like you are brining transported to somewhere else. I really enjoy the series!
Dune (1984)
It's alright
The movie isn't as bad as its reputation. You have to remember it was made in 1984! The special effects were craps back then and the story is too complex to be cramped into two hours, but keeping that in mind, the film isn't halfway bad!
The only thing I really didn't like is the portrayal of the Harkonnens. They are comical not scary (the Baron is a joke, then we have Sting in pants and milking a cat?). I also did not understand the voice-weapons. Where did Paul get them from all of a sudden?
Other parts made more sense/were better explained than in the new movies. And with Kyle Merritt MacLachlan, Sir Patrick Stewart, Max von Sydow and Jürgen Prochnow it has some good actors.
Dune: Part Two (2024)
Overwhelmed at the end
After watching the movie, you are not done with it.
Dune 2 has great pictures and music. It's dark and gritty and I love that. I really had to think about what it all meant and how I felt about it and that is also a minus. I felt like a lot was not really explained and like I had fallen asleep been scenes and missed something. I also felt really uncomfortable with the whole idea of fundamentalism and a holy war, but I guess that was intended. But all in all I was really fascinated by it and ripped me in a way no sci-fi movie has done in a long time. Star Wars could really something here. It makes you want to learn and understand more. I can really recommend watching the movie.
Somebody (2022)
I didn't understand the characters
There were some good ideas, but I found the characters strange and hard to connect to. Just a strange show to the very end. There was nothing to learn and little character development. I also did not understand why there was so little police involvement and how the bad guy could so easily enter a house and why the characters acted liked they did. Also the dialog made sometimes no sense to me. Perhaps it's a cultural thing, but I really do enjoy Asian shows but just not this one. It would also have been interesting to learn a little bit more about the bad guy. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this show.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 24: The Return (2023)
Boring
While there were some nice fights, the finale of the show left much to be desired. Moff Gideon, despite having new armor, three Praetorians, and TIE defenders at his disposal, was easily defeated. The absence of any spies or Thrawn, and the lack of a big emotional death, was disappointing. Dark Saber is goes into the bin and Grogu gets Din Djarin's first name???? Additionally, the sudden change in the bounty hunter's motivations, from an outlaw to a defender of democracy left much to be desired! Overall, the finale failed to live up to expectations and left much to be desired. I may need to rewatch Andor to get my Star Wars fix.
Andor (2022)
Star Wars for grown-ups
Andor is the Star Wars show I have been waiting for! Lots of grey and interesting characters, spies, Space FBI, politics, family problems, money, robberies and even (implied) brothels and sex. This is a fantastic show that doesn't need Jedi and Lightsabers to work perfectly. Even some "baddies" are interesting and you can feel and root for them if you choose too. Not at all comparable to the laughing stock Empire we saw in the last Star Wars cinema movie. After "Boba Fett" I was a bit disappointed in Disney, but this is great! In my opinion "Andor" is the best Star Wars show made so far. Perhaps even the best Star Wars since "Return of the Jedi".
The Blacklist (2013)
Just WOW!
I started watching when there were already 9 seasons. I don't know why I didn't start before ! It is sooo freaking good and it keeps on delivering season after season. Spader at his best!
Die Sturmflut (2006)
Not bad
Considering that it's a German TV production from 2006, it's not bad at all.
Miseuteo Shunshain (2018)
Visually stunning
I love every picture! The colours, the light, the angles - that alone is art!
And there is so much tragedy and emotion. I really feel sorry for the characters and that's something not every show achieves these days. Too bad it hasn't been translated, but after a while you don't notice the subtitles anymore.
The music is also great, albeit unexpected. It's a strange mix of something you would expect in a Sherlock Holmes series and American pop songs.
Anyway, I've seen the first three episodes so far and I totally love it!
Nightflyers: All That We Have Found (2018)
The series was ok, the end wasn't
Extremely disappointing end. No questions answered.
Star Trek: Discovery: Saints of Imperfection (2019)
Worst episode so far
I really enjoyed season 1 and so far season 2 has not lived up to season 1 (at least in my opinion). This episode was especially disappointing. They resurrected the old doctor, Ash came back too, there were tones of crazy theories how they could save everyone and then there was a tacky speech about "we leave nobody behind because we are all good people". And all Paul Stamets did when Ash entered the bridge, was pausing in his speech and look at him! Really?
All in all, I felt a bit cheated. Why have season 1 at all if now everything is being reseted? It feels like they bend to the screams of offended Star Trek fans over 35. Or maybe it's just me, I liked the darker version of Star Trek in which things do not go as planned, in which there are traitors and also good people can die. For me there is little point in watching a show when you already know he or she is not going to die because this person is part of the main cast. What I did like about this episode, however, was Section 31 and Philippa Georgiou. But if Discovery goes on like this, I might try "Nightflyers" instead.
Star Trek: Discovery: Vaulting Ambition (2018)
Best episode so far
Ever since they entered the mirror universe, the series is fantastic. It took me a while to get into it (the start was slow and very different to what I was used to), but now I think it's the best series so far! It's a grown up, darker version of Star Trek. It's unpredictable with great plot twists, main characters can actually die and other character come in and can become main characters. It's interesting, shocking and in the end you will beg you for more. Nothing is written in stone and that's waht makes it so good. The second time you watch this show it might be even better. This episode was the best so war. Captain Lorca - what a shady character. His story arc totally turned STD around! And I love it!
