Cinderella Man (2005)
Oscar for Paul--Please!!!!
It is time for "Pig Vomit*" to get what he deserves! And what he deserves is a little Golden Statue! I have loved Paul Giamatti since he gave Julia Roberts a cigarette in "My Best Friend's Wedding" and have dreamed of this day for almost a decade. And then I went to see "Cinderella Man," as until 2006 I believed there was no way I'd miss a Ron Howard film, in spite of Russell Crowe, also brilliant BTW. In this under-appreciated masterpiece previous Oscar winners Crowe and Zellweger should be nominated again, as should legendary Ron Howard, but the heart and soul of this **** out of 4 masterpiece (best film of 2005 bar none) is the feisty manager Joe Gould played my MISTER Giamatti. After this spring we won't need to look up his name to remember it.
(*character name in 1997--"Private Parts")
Just Like Heaven (2005)
Rent it love it
I have to admit that I am a closet Reese Witherspoon fan. An actress that I have refused to be a fan of has inadvertently starred in 2 of my my favorite silly romantic comedies. First with "Sweet Home Alambama" and now with "Just Like Heaven" Ms. Witherspoon begs comparison with Audrey Hepburn. Yes shockingly enough I just said that Reese Witherspoon begs comparison with Audrey Hepburn. This movie solidified that alien thought for me. A cute well thought out escape for ninety minutes. By the way her co-stars definitely show promise. I often wonder about 2 standard measures of greatness-- critics and box office. This movie had neither--and it was brilliant.
One Special Night (1999)
Chocolate pancakes anyone?
Call me sappy. Call me nostalgic. Call me silly. But I loved it. 2 great actors, one Oscar winner one who should be and an old fashioned relatively moral love story. It evokes a feeling I will never forget and I re-watch it every year. BTW I've never seen any of the supporting cast again and that is disappointing. I also hope James and Julie don't make us wait another 18 years to another film together; they have previously co-starred in The Americanization of Emily and Victor Victoria. Husbands take note about what James Garner remembered the most of his late wife and Julie Andrews' reaction. and after seeing the film have some chocolate chip pancakes in the stars honor.
Pope John Paul II (2005)
Can you say Emmy anyone?
I have always been a Cary Elwes fan and of course, I love John Paul the Great and will always love the greatest saint of modern times but I was never a fan of John Voight until that Sunday night and now I can say that he is one of the best actors of his day he became the late great Holy Father for ninety minutes. yes the mini series made JP II look like saint, but hey is one. Elwes was fine, too old for his his first hour on screen, but passable. my only complaint was that it was too short and rushed in places. the film was reverently, well acted and handsomely crafted. I think it's crime that Voight is not up for a golden globe but I expect him to win an emmy for this one.
