Death of a Nation (2018)
Divisive nonsense
Making connections between left or right viewpoints in comparison with over 100 years ago is absurd. The West needs to find things that unite liberal and conservative. Truth and virtue should be precious. This film is bad divisive propoganda
The Babadook (2014)
A very good chiller
I wondered why this was rated so poorly compared to the critic reviews. It seems as though people only want big loud scares in a horror movie these days.
The Shining and The Exorcist were clearly influences on this film and they were terrifying but also great films for character.
The Babadook adds elements of We need to talk about Kevin and it makes a proper film that I'd like to watch again. Yes the child is annoying but that adds to the discomfort you feel for the mother, who puts in a brilliant performance. The setting is bleak and you feel as if the two main characters are alone. It seems as though this is very purposeful as they aren't able to get help from either the two characters close to the family or the police.
It is a wonder why the mother would continue to live in that house 7 years after her husband dies and why Australian TV is so art-house and vintage but these are minor issues.
I would not like to watch this film again alone in the middle of the night.
The Ricky Gervais Show (2010)
Tremendous
First of all, I've been listening to these podcasts since the first episode on guardianunlimited.
These 'conversations' have a universal appeal because we all know a nugget like Karl. But the odd thing is, is that some of his bizarre theories actually have some credence.
I love this revamp of the podcasts. The animation is spot on. I like the flintstones style characters mixed with the almost Ren and Stimpy segways. The timing of Steve and Ricky's reaction to 'the little bald manc with a head like a orange' is superb.
I hope this HBO series carries on through all the best bits of the podcasts and Karl gets the international recognition for being the stupidest genius on the planet.
Chimpanzee that?
Antichrist (2009)
Don't get so angry. Its just a film dear
Just got back from watching this film and to be honest it was comedy. People are obviously going to be shocked and offended by this but really they aren't getting the point. LVT wants you to be offended by it.
It has little themes toward misogyny but its not what the film is essentially about really.
Willem Defoe's character ends up killing his mentally ill wife because he cant cure her and he realises that in the end. He is probably mentally ill himself considering he is seeing visions of half dead mutilated animals talking to him.
This film is not saying women are evil. Gainsbergs character believes this but she is out of her tree. She blames nature, Satan and menstruation. Her husband is arrogant and not a very good therapist.
When it comes to the so called torture porn, its no worse than misery, or the exorcist or hostel. I wanted to look away when she got the scissors out. This is not even the weirdest film I've seen. For that I direct you to crazy surreal Japanese flick Gozu where a woman gives birth to a fully grown yakuza gangster.
No this was just a slightly pretentious, well shot, well acted exploration of mental illness and rubbish psychoanalysts. The gore scenes are there to inflame daily mail readers in order to publicise and make more money.
6/10 good night
