Header (2006)
Really silly film, poorly made
Just seen this film, and have to say that I shouldn't have bothered. The trailer looked really cheap, with poor photography and lousy acting. Anyway I thought I'd give it a chance. Well the basic OMG shocking Header scenes are just stupid. Nothing made any sense. And the idea of the Header just seemed ridiculous to me. I guess if you watch a film purely to feel grossed out every now and again, then this may be just what you're looking for. But otherwise stay clear of this cinematic mess. If only the director knew how to handle/direct his actors and DP. I just hate badly made, poorly shot films. You don't have to have a lot of money to find and bring out the best in your performers and also create a distinctive visual look. Definitely a desperate, gimmick movie for the McHorror crowd. Steer clear of this - unless you're a 12 year old who wants to brag to his friends he's just seen something 'naughty'.
Step Brothers (2008)
A big fan of Ferrell but this is the worst EVER!
Simply the worst (scripted, acted and constructed) Ferrell comedy EVER! A lazy, sloppy production. Not even funny (even though it tried so very hard to be). And in the packed theater I saw this in I only heard about 5 laughs (and they weren't very loud). I really wish it had been better.
The step brothers' characterizations were all over the place. One minute they're slightly eccentric, the next they're seriously deranged morons. And the film's tedium is almost unbearable (though I did manage to watch it to the end - just in case it got better). It didn't.
And why anyone would care about these spoilt, middle class, psychotic losers (especially when they're not funny) is anybody's guess.
I hope Ferrell picks more carefully next time.
Juno (2007)
Great acting - pity about the script
I was expecting a funny, involving film but instead found an extremely well acted film that, however hard it tried (and it did try a lot), just didn't make me care about any of the characters involved. Which is a shame. I only laughed 3 times. About 4 laughs less than the rest of the audience. And the fact that I counted the laughs shows how little I was drawn into the film as a whole.
I found the script to be far too self conscious for it's own good. I don't know if it was the writer's first film - but it certainly seemed like it. I guess I was expecting something similar to the offbeat brilliance of "Harold & Maude" and "Rushmore". If only it had been as involving as the coming of age classic "Breaking Away."
I was impressed by all the performers. They were uniformly wonderful. But overall JUNO is way over-rated.
Night Must Fall (1964)
Just watched it on TCM
Just watched this film on TCM. Quite enjoyable and not as bad as I'd heard from reviews I'd read over the years. My only problem was that I was expecting to understand more about Finney's character by the end of the film (ie: what lead to his psychotic behaviour, what had gone wrong in his childhood...that kind of thing), but never got any deep insight at all. Which for me made him rather a 1 dimensional screen psycho - and therefore the film was not as interesting as it should have been. And the end of the movie was a ..."so what?" affair.
Did I miss something?
Or was I expecting a movie with more depth than it actually had?
