The Wheel of Time: The Eye of the World (2021)
700 pages to 8 episodes just didnt work... I wonder who thought it would...
Obviously they needed more episodes as; if you have watched the commentaries, they mention giving all the characters their due on the spotlight and this was not really done properly, unfortunately. Taking the spotlight from the main character and giving it to the side characters isnt the best idea.. Now I know that they are trying to be all inclusive and politically correct and all of that but seriously, there is a point where you just mess with the wrong things.
What did we see The Dragon do all through the 8 episodes? Nothing.
The Dragon was the one in the real climax of the war scene at the end of the book. And this would be the first step in the making of Dragon's legend among the common folk. Also it was an incredibly cool scene in the book.
On the plus side they did a good job with the lightning effects imo.
Please do a better season 2!
And please make it longer! Ideal would be 24 episodes but at least 12 or 16 I dont know...
P.s I watch the series wishing they dont totally mess up the books' storie as was done with many great books throught out the past 30 years. You could say that I have very low expectations but even I was disappointed in this episode.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Better than expected!
A 10 out of 10 is a little bit too much but honestly, there are so many foolish people who know nothing about the series or are haters for no apparent reason who gave it 1/10 that I felt obligated to give more than what it deserves (8/10 objectively). Also I am very happy that they made the book series into a visual spectacle so kudos to the project!
I have read the books (up to 9 or 10) about 10 years ago so it did have a nostalgic effect on me so keep that in mind, as I am sure that anyone who haven't read the books might not like the show as much. Main reason for this is that the world of Wheel of Time is immense; it is an epic, not your run of the mill young adult fantasy story, and to put it inside a show you have to cut tons of stuff, or you will have incredible production costs. The books total at more than 10000 pages long.
Some of the negative points I had about the book series is put into the tv show as well but it is what it is. I.e. Dumb male characters, Wheel of Time in general has female characters superior to the male characters (Be it in authority or intelligence or other virtuous aspects of humanity) but this sometimes creates interesting dialogs and dynamics. This is a negative point in my opinion because really why does one have to be obviously superior, it is too easy.
A big positive was how the characters resemble so much to what you might have imagined when you were reading the books, it really seems loyal to the original work so nice one there.
The diversity in the books and tv show is a big plus in my opinion because it is not forced. It really is depicted in the books like it is in the tv show. IT personally annoys me when they force it like they do in the new marvel comics or the witcher in netflix or any Disney work for that matter.
CGI could be better, but it is still very good, maybe not 10/10 but certainly 8,5/10 at least. In some scenes actresses/actors don't mix well with the CGI, looks silly but not as exaggerated as some other comments make them out to be. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous.
I do look forward to the following episodes and I hope that they don't rush the story along, it is a story that's quite a bit longer than Game of Thrones so I hope they have the budget to go on at least as long as it did(Although I doubt it) assuming that it is a commercial success.
