Star Trek: Discovery: Choose Your Pain (2017)
Season 1, Episode 5
7/10
Better than the previous one.. i am still dubious though.

Warning: Spoilers
This one was far better than the catastrophe that was 1x04 "The Butchers knife cares not for the Lambs cry". Even if i won't explain exactly what made it fun, believe me that it was. It is a solid 7/10 IMHO.

The character motivations were reasonable. The introductions of Harry Mudd and dubious_starfleet_officer_01 on the Klingon prison ship were "Meh!". Everything Klingon related continues to be "Meh!" really.

Stamets solution to the ethical dilemma the exploitation of the tardigrade/water bear presented was very trek-esque. I just have the feeling that this will just be used as a McGuffin for Lorka's future reasoning that this was reckless and self sacrificial(which it was).

Also freeing the water bear, while "good" in a karmic sense, will only and obviously be used to set Lorka off.

I am a pragmatist. I can see the reasoning behind the actions of someone like Lorka and the series set up a situation where someone like him is necessary, but they keep using him in a blunt way... like a sledgehammer. There is no finesse to him and the character would work so much better if he had some. He needs a few character traits of the early Admiral Thrawn(Star Wars).

On to this weeks screw ups:

(1)The federation is at war. Why do they *shuttle* high profile officers through contested space? Why do they shuttle personnel at all? It's dangerous, slow and stupid! Writers, if you need Lorka to get captured please come up with a more plausible way!

(2)They made an effort to explain that the water bear expelled 99% of the water contained in its body, when it entered it's the dormant stage. There was even some visual effects to emphasize that. Once the dormant tardigrade left the ship sprinkled with pixie dust(spores) it magically gets re-hydrated in vacuum. Yeah right!

Getaway (I) (2013)

Absurd attempt at doing something Need For Speed-like
16 October 2013
Oh boy where to start....

If I'd list everything that is just utterly wrong in this movie in terms of character motivation, logic glitches .... pages would be filled.

A crash car derby has a plot that makes more sense. At least there you know its all about turning cars into scrap metal. In this movie it happens to more expensive cars and there's not really anything else happening. Cars get destroyed left and right and you sit there and think: "Yeah this should all be filled with tension and be exciting." Instead i was just bored. Just in terms of making sense as a movie so many thing were done wrong early that i felt sort of detached and was not caring about what was happening or who it was happening to.

I did see this movie in a sneak preview screening. The audience there is somewhat different. We were having our fun after all, because this movie gives you so many opportunities to laugh at it. And once we were resigned to just how bad it was, it was rather funny (unintentionally) in the end.

Not Fade Away (2012)

Nostalgic movie that cannot stand on its own.

This is a movie that does not follow an exact straight line for the plot. It is not exactly sure what it is all about. In my opinion it stays fuzzy in that aspect until the end.

The idea behind the movie seems to be to transport the look and feel of the time the movie takes place in. Doing so it follows the adolescent years of a boy, his family and his struggle to make it in the music world. You will find many reviews that are very much in favor of this picture. I cannot share this view, which leads me to believe it needs for the viewer to have some experience with or interest in the decade it plays in (the 60's). Being born in 70's and having no interest whatsoever in the 60's historically or for the music, the movie had nothing to offer to me. That is bad storytelling in my opinion and lead to my low vote.

The plot remains fuzzy and stretched too far to make sense. I guess the acting was not too bad on some supporting roles, but i did not like the main characters too much. Seriously everything remained too shallow for me to care.

If you have fond memories of the time then by all means try it. Your personal experience will probably fill in the gaps and you will have a good time. Otherwise the good reviews are all inexplicable. If you are not interested in the era then keep your distance or you *WILL* regret it!
