Hot Air (2018)
How low can he go.
With 'he' I mean of course Steve Coogan who gave use so many brilliant shows and movies - it is just not worth spending on any more time on this. I gave it a 1 as I am not sure a 0 is accepted.
The Women (1939)
Perfect
What can I add that has not been written yet about this movie? This is another gem from the magical Hollywood year of 1939. So far, none of the movies from that year have disappointed and 'The Women' is one of the absolute best.
I have to admit that I had never heard or knew anything about the movie. I only decided to watch it as it features Joan Crawford and she is by all means absolutely brilliant. But so it is the rest of the cast. Top rated. You will enjoy this.
All About Eve (1950)
Pseudo artistic nonsense
Over the years I have become a fan of watching classic movies; that is to say movies that span the period that is often referred to as the golden age of Hollywood, 1930 to 1960. However, not all movies of that era turn out be classics.
Something which certainly upholds for 'All About Eve'. This movie is all about the dialog, after all it is a theater play on printed film. And it is a very bad play with bad dialog and over-extend monologues and soliloquies who make you think of Macbeth but not in a way the writers of this vile play would want you to. I am sure it is full of inside jokes and innuendo that only real, ahem, artists understand. Do people from the world of theater, the actors, writers, producers, etc, really talk like that on cocktail parties?
Once in a while Hollywood makes this pseudo artistic nonsense. Other more recent examples are The Artist and La La Land. Hollywood makes those for themselves, to show off, to give themselves an air of artisticness. And they know it will fail so they throw everything they got at it. Lots of money to promote the movie, get the critics on board and of course, the best of it all, overload it with academy award nominations and wins. It is not a coincidence that this movie and La La Land both share the record for most nominations given to any movie. It is very sad that because of this abuse the number of Oscars a movie receives or is nominated for has become more of an indication of other motives then purely the intention to reward it for whatever category it receives that nomination or award.
Compare this to another 'theater play' movie from that same era, namely 'The Importance of Being Earnest' from 1952 directed by Anthony Asquith after a play by Oscar Wilde. And you are in a completely different league here. No academy awards for that movie, of course it was not a Hollywood production, so nothing Hollywood could show off with.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
The significance of STAR TREK
...would be to go boldly! The original series did that in more than 1 way. They had a ruskie at the helm! And that was way back in 1968 at the height of the cold war. And the chief engineer was a Scot! I only say that because of everybody knows that these guys are ferocious alcoholics. So you would trust them with your engines?!
The next one - the next generation - even had an English captain. And..wait for it, a Klingon officer. Now these guys, the Klingons, are supposed to be the start trek equivalent of the evil Russians. At least in the original series and movies. So yes - they continued going boldly. They also featured a female security officer. But not for very long; she mysteriously disappeared after the first season.
We move on to Deep Space Nine and now we really are in full gear 'boldly-go' mode with Captain Cisco. Ignoring the fact that the actor cannot act we should notice though that he was black. And we continue on that path with Voyager which is presenting us with the first female captain, although still very much white.
Which brings us to Enterprise, and that was a bit of a step back, having been canceled after a mere 4 seasons whereas the other follow ups of STTOS would spit out 7 seasons! Would it be the lack of a female black captain? No Russians on board? Only a couple of aliens as star fleet officers. hmm.
But now comes Discovery. They really have something to blow the lids off. And I am not talking about the re-modeled Klingons that look like giant lizards and talk like little school girls. Also not mentioning the first female captain of Chinese ancestry. No nothing so tame as all that. But instead... we have the first gay couple! A couple of gay star fleet officers on board of the star ship Discovery! Now they've done it. Now Star Trek is like another episode of the Bold and the Beautiful. Poor Gene - he knew when it was time to quit.
My rating which 1 star is the minimum you can give here. On rotten tomatoes I would give it a 0 % freshness and it would join the company of such master pieces as Hard Cash, Simon Sez, Precious Cargo and Life on the Line.
