Uchiage hanabi, shita kara miru ka? Yoko kara miru ka? (2017)
So bad, it's amazing
You know, I like anime. Actually scratch that. I LOVE ANIME! More particularly anime movies. I barely see a bad anime movie and when I see one, I quickly forget about it. But something about Fireworks made more think twice on that notation. I don't know if it's the boring story, uninteresting characters, or that hilarious subtitle, but this is a new standard of terrible anime films. This is one of the worst anime movies I have ever seen for the reasons I mentioned. But wait it gets better as the film goes on, in that it gets stupider and stupider and stupider to the point where anything that happens just makes me laugh for all the wrong reasons. Even the above average animation can't save this terrible movie. 5.5/10
Meari to majo no hana (2017)
Massive disappointment coming from Ghibli
Mary and the Witch's Flower could've been such a remarkable movie with gorgeous animation and wonderful and imaginative sequences of pure magic, but it settles on a very safe story that is reminiscent of Harry Potter and characters that were so uninteresting, including Mary. And most of all, Studio Ghibli has been a fantastic animation studio that not only has some of the best animated movies of all time but some of the best films ever made like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, and even more. But to see that after their studio shut down in 2015 and for a new studio taking its place and giving us average animated movies like this is a massive mistake and should've been much more than what it was.
Yoru wa mijikashi aruke yo otome (2017)
So Weird, Its Remarkable
The director is known for his weird style of directing of characters and animation and it definitely works making one of the most uniquely told movies of the year and I loved it. Some beats in the middle can drag and characters make some weird decisions but for the most part, this is a well done animated movie and one of the best films of the year.
