Damsel (2024)
6/10
visually beautiful, simple plot without positive or special features
4 May 2024
Unfortunately, the colorful fairy tale world of Damsel cannot hide the fact that the plot is quite simple and things like character development or even exciting characters are completely missing. There are also mistakes and inconsistencies in the staging. Cinematically, the whole thing is rather mediocre. Nevertheless, the movie doesn't manage to be completely boring - which is probably also due to Millie Bobby Brown's good performance. Conclusion: not really good, but not really bad either ... at least visually splendid and therefore worth seeing. Last but not least, I wouldn't call it a fantasy movie. It's a fairy tale movie ... but a little too brutal for children.

Disappointing and boring
14 January 2024
Although Monarch has made an enormous effort to deliver a glossy series, you are more and more disappointed with every episode. The dramaturgy and narrative style simply don't manage to generate anything long term exciting. Maybe it's also the plot as such that you're tempted to switch off with every episode because nothing happens and nothing interesting is told. Flashbacks, which are quite interesting at the beginning, make the feeling of boredom even worse at the end. Shortly before the end of episode 8, I decided not to continue watching. Brilliant CGI for a few minutes every 3 hours just isn't enough to keep me entertained. I find the series a waste of time.

Great Idea, but dramaturgical fail / wasted potential
13 December 2023
After all the rather good reviews here, one is rather disappointed. The science fiction idea itself is great, and you can spin so many visions of the future out of it, but in the end it's just a poor and very long-winded story that loses itself more and more in meaninglessness. And so some German 90-minute TV thrillers are more exciting than this production. This is once again a shame, because the movie is visually quite coherent and some of the actors try to give their best. In short: a great idea, a less imaginative plot and a dramaturgical failure. Perhaps the film should have been shortened to give it a bit more drive? 20 minutes less and the film would certainly have lost nothing, but perhaps gained more liveliness.

you must not think about what you see
14 October 2023
You really can't think about what you see in this film. Plenty of nonsensical incoherent plot. The question arises why so much of a dystopian background story is told at the beginning, when it doesn't even play a role until the end. Much more, it plays a role in the great the boredom of the film with some dramatic scene to break. Unfortunately, this doesn't work because of the unrealism that lasts until the last minutes of the film. However, the actress does her best and together with the somewhat different survival idea, the film may be quite entertaining for people who do not expect a sophisticated film.

Just a tired knock-off of The Boys.
7 October 2023
The series is just a tired knock-off of The Boys.

So far (4 episodes) a boring story with a mediocre cast. Even the setting as such (school/university) may interest younger people, but older viewers? Through a few rare obscenities, the series tries to be something special, but obscenities are not the only thing that makes The Boys. The Boys puts a lot of emphasis on the characters' idiosyncrasies and subsequent appropriate interactions, and that is almost completely missing here. The roles are basically quite interchangeable and not very special.

We'll see how this develops, but I'm on the verge of not watching the series any more.

Extremely Overrated
13 July 2023
I really don't understand why this series could get a whopping 7.7 stars. Maybe the friends of the genre are not that demanding, but for me personally, this entertainment is not enough. From the second half of the first season at the latest, I was bored and had to suffer from one episode to the next. Now, at the first episode of the second season, I decided to stop watching. The story is thin and not much more than panic is conveyed. Neither that the whole thing is scary nor that we are getting any closer to solving the mystery after one season in any way. One nonsense follows the other. 'From' is pure waste of time.

unfortunately more action flick than adventure film
12 July 2023
Many things can be said about this last Indiana Jones film, but not that it is bad. Nevertheless, it is regrettable that one thing in particular is pushed into the background in the film: the archaeology and the spirit of discovery. Instead, there is non-stop action and therefore the film is more reminiscent of a James Bond film, where one car chase follows the next, than an adventure film. At least this is true for the first half of the film. The second part is more varied and knows how to surprise. Unfortunately, however, too little time is taken in the second half, so that a lot of potential is wasted. Nevertheless, I was impressed by a very agile Harrison Ford (or was it stuntmen?) and the successful look and feel of the whole film (including the humour), which is almost on a par with the old films.

Silo (2023– )

seems to become another tv+ gem
3 June 2023
Although this series started with mediocre feeling at my side, it seems it developed into very, very good one, thanks to the unique Rebecca Ferguson that not only plays excellent. She has charisma that makes big actors and together with this impressive set of this special "underworld" where no inhabitants know much about their own existence, Silo develops into a mixture of a crime and dystopian science fiction. What also sets Silo apart from other dystopian stories is that it is not too far-fetched that this could be one future of humanity (IMHO). Even before the end of the first season, I'm curious to see what happens in the second ...

Apple can also do mediocrity - for instance with such film.
6 April 2023
It's a real pity that what was probably the most important computer game of the 20th century has become nothing more than an almost level-free entertainment film.

It is basically a boring story about licensing that has been spiced up a little with action and humour. There is almost nothing (profound) about the creation of the game or the significance of computer games as such at that time. There is also a complete lack of background stories or character development. So It's a good thing that stereotypes and clichés are not rare, that the viewer really doesn't get the idea to think about the characters at all.

At the end of the film, you are pretty disappointed, and the funny retro-computer-graphic interludes won't help to get this film a good memory.

The Last of Us (2023– )

Story infected by fungus too
14 March 2023
Undoubtedly, they tried to make something out of a (as usual) thin video game story, but Last Of Us shows that pretty elaborate pictures and imagined background stories of characters and good acting are not enough to make an exciting series out of it. Apart from a bit of action here and there, nothing happens in many episodes. I was bored again and again. Furthermore, Last Of Us, like many zombie series, makes the mistake of losing sight of the mystery of the plague itself. The audience has to deal with the (past) lives of the main protagonists all the time, and that's it. The Walking Dead excited me (the first seasons) much more than the first season of Last Of Us.

If the series wasn't so good visually and if the actors weren't so convincing, this series would hardly be worth 4 stars, and the currently 9 stars seem to have come mainly from enthusiastic video game fans. ;)

completly overrated - what a waste if time
12 March 2023
I really don't know why this film was hyped so much. The film is a seemingly never-ending martial arts composition with the pretence of somehow being a science fiction film. Maybe numerous people like the craziness, which, of course, could also be seen as an artistic achievement, but all the film really has to offer is a trivial, cheesy story that culminates in some nonsense and absurdities and, as I said, brutal fighting, fighting and again fighting. I waited a long time while watching the film for something to come along that would somehow captivate me, but nothing.

I have rarely struggled through a film as much as I did through this one, and it is probably the first and only film where I am completely at a loss as to why this film doesn't inspire me, despite the good reviews of others. Maybe I should have smoked a bit pot or taken acid to get some entertainment out of this never-ending nonsense ...

I found this film to be 140 minutes of wasted life (plus 5 Euro rental fee).

Vinyl (2016)

Really good, but feels unfinished at the end
19 February 2023
Once I stopped watching Vinyl because the first episode could not captivate me fast enough. But I gave it a second try and after the second episode I have to say: this series is a must. Especially for all fans of the music era of the 70s. Great charismatic actors good acting, great production design, a diverse story and not to forget great music!

Not very successful is probable the choice of doubles for famous stars, but these only ever have short appearances ... More annoying is at the end / after watching the last episode that it feels that one or two episodes before are missing. It feels as if the series had to end quickly or as if the series should have continued in a second season. Some questions remain unanswered, and not in a deliberately philosophical way.

So the ending is a bit of a shame, considering the overall quality of the series with great actors. But on the other hand, it's not that disappointing ... I can only warmly recommend Vinyl!

What is this film supposed to be?
10 September 2022
On the one hand, it's very interesting how this film is almost devoid of a personal history or development of the characters. Also there is are no real main roles at all. On the other hand, it's what's missing to make it entertaining. So we see a lot of rescue workers who don't really know what to do, a city population that ignores and hinders the rescue workers and an 800 years old cathedral that almost burns down completely.

Not so exciting, because apart from the tragedy of the destruction, nothing special happens. No special event shown or a known reason is told for this catastrophy that answers our only question: why this happened? ... like in millions of other fires where old buildings simply start burning for seemingly no reason. But is this enough for a entertaining flick? I think not. Not if it's not artfully staged and it isn't. Sometimes you even think you're watching a B-movie.

A real documentary would have been more exciting than an entertainment film without a real story that doesn't know what it's supposed to be.

A little series gem
11 August 2022
A really surprisingly good series that juxtaposes very serious and sad themes with humor and romance as counterpoint, as it rarely does. Never boring, very honest - just good. A little series gem, really worth watching - not just for entertainment, but to learn the about other people's sometimes not so simple lives.

Surprisingly exciting towards the end
20 June 2022
This movie is driven from main role with it's special psychological problem, and Zoë Kravitz does a good job with it's performance. The plot is simple, but it's very good directed, and the movie makes toward the end to be really exciting. "Kimi" is a good proof that even simple and shorter movie could be very entertaining.

Ghostbusters meets Stranger Things ...
15 May 2022
... and not only because of the cast. One could think that Ivan Reitman has copied a lot from the Duffer Brothers: The story/tension develops slowly until the very end, a lot of attention to detail (sets, location) and the childlike humor and characters are decidedly entertaining. That all is good and nicely done, but character development is weak, some things are handled too quickly and in terms of the ghosts-story itself, nothing new happens. In addition, the film is so retro styled and told that the time of the event (namely 2021) is not taken at all - rather you get the feeling to have seen a story that happens in the 90s. Nevertheless, it's a really worth seeing entertaining and funny Ghostbusters film (better the others, excepts the first) for old fans and possibly their offsprings. Highly recommend!

stopped watching at episode 4
24 January 2022
Visually very nice it starts interesting but at least in episode 3 you will realize that's just bullshit (in terms of sci-fi). I stopped watching after he connects his brain to a cat and see's her visual memories. If you want to see an undemanding thriller drama with nice visuals and locations it's probably good for you but don't watch this if you want science fiction.

So funny! You have to watch it!
7 January 2022
This series goes more the chamber play direction: only one location (a single house), mainly four actors. But the acting is exceptionally great and the high level of photography makes it a pleasure to watch. No episode is boring and it's always very captivating ... and sometimes so weird, you can't stop laughing inside yourself. The con is maybe that's not spooky enough, but I'm very excited to watch the third season. You really have to give it a try!

biggest strength is the slowness ...
2 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
... and much more, because unlike other films that are about cloning to fight disease and ultimately death, the film illuminates a very personal emotional struggle. The acting is great, photography too and it's everything else than boring - if you don't expect scifi that includes a lot of science or action. This is a film about the doubt of doing the right thing for people you love and the fear about loosing the own existence and accepting the death in a early state. Very recommend to watch if you not fear to watch a film that goes more or less art house style direction.

Nobody (I) (2021)

Promising at the beginning, sadly only a pure action flick in the end.
14 November 2021
The film with Bob Odenkirk starts promisingly because the story takes a little time to pick up speed. Unfortunately, however, the more demanding viewer is quickly disappointed because the initially quiet film turns into a pure (rather brutal) action film. Disappointingly, this is done without the slightest attempt to illuminate the main character a little more deeply. There is a good beating and in the end only shooting. This is a pity, because the protagonist (with such a good cast) would have deserved to be explored in more detail (e.g. With two or three flashbacks). Also, how NOBODY manages his hurdles technically remains almost completely hidden (e.g. How he manages to break into "the lion's den") - in the end it's all about violence. Quite a pity ... the film wastes a lot of potential. Nevertheless, it's well made and entertaining.

P. S.: The 7.4 stars on IMDb include at least 0.5 sympathy stars for the cast with Bob Odenkirk and of course Christopher Lloyd. With lesser-known actors, the film would hardly have made it past the 6.4!

Humans (2015–2018)

Really worth to watch!
16 October 2021
HUMANS feels a bit low budget at the beginning, because it doesn't show a future time and world in terms of cars or technics. It's shows the current, except that the world simply knows and uses (!) artificial humans since a decade. This feels a bit unusual at the beginning and not so cool like you know it from Sci-Fi movies, but after three or four episodes the cast and the story draws you in. This is probably due to the fact, that HUMANS ask some interesting question and shows different point of views. Because of this it's not so important, that technical things in HUMANS are far away from any realism. I'm now in the middle of Season two, and it got better and better till now. Give it a try!

Nice, but ...
9 June 2021
It's a nice and well-developed dystopian sci-fi tale, but while watching you never know what it's supposed to be. Too much brutality for a children's series, too little science for scifi, and at times too soft and colorful for a dystopian world. It's also full of stereotypes, which makes it far from any realism. It's a mixture of already known ideas and stories, but it's entertaining because of many beautiful places and details, where the creators have put a lot of effort. So it's entertaining without question and nice popcorn cinema.

Don't miss it!
3 June 2021
The miniseries leaves me with the feeling of having (finally) learned more about these ultra-orthodox Jews and that the 4 episodes were too little to illuminate everything sufficiently and profoundly. Nevertheless, the series is excellent and profound and really worth watching. Impressive acting, a special story and exciting in every minute.

Most entertaining doctor series I have ever seen.
16 May 2021
This series really does a lot right: lightness (fun), heart, depth and science (although I can't judge how well the medical cases are presented). Everything is well-portioned with really nice actors and every episode is exciting. Besides, the series is a plea for different people and against prejudice. Furthermore, it is nice that there are still series where each episode has a self-contained plot and yet a great long story is told. A must for all people who are interested in a good and exciting doctor series.
