The Kominsky Method (2018)
This is a Masterclass in Drama and Comedy!
Chuck Lorre has been known for sitcom. His glib,quick-witted badinage has made us laugh in numerous shows. The Kominsky Method is different! This, quite simply, is GENIUS! This is still funny...hysterical in fact...but it's also some of the most moving drama I've experienced in the 65 years I've been going to theater and movies in my native UK and in my adoptive US. I cried, I laughed until I almost peed, and felt more vulnerable and emotional, than I've ever felt before. The performances are flawless! The writing, immaculate! My wife and I have literally gone into mourning now it's over! A special mention to the late and sublime Alan Arkin and a surprisingly Award winning performance by Michael Douglas. But the great Chuck Lorrie is the star! It all begins with the written word! Thank you for providing us such an absolute delight! We will miss you all!!
Mum (2016)
Once in a while you find a GEM!
Once in a while you stumble upon a gem of a show, when you least expect it. As an ex-pat living in Los Angeles and married to an American, my wife and I almost exclusively watch British shows. We have always loved Lesley Manville and thought we'd try this as our evening comedy. What an absolute joy this is! Gentle, yet poignant. Funny, yet painfully sad. The writing is outstanding and performances..(every single one of them,) beyond brilliant!
This is a must! Stefan Golaszewski is clearly a genius! It's stunningly beautiful in its complexity...masquerading as simplicity. We miss them all so much already! I could watch this forever!!
Love Life (2020)
Gobsmacked!
Honestly, ashamed to say, I never took Anna Kendrick seriously. I thought she was a lightweight comedy actress with a reputation for being difficult. Her performance in Love Life has left me gobsmacked! She is amazing! What a talent! Her levels, subtlety, complex performance, charm and humor, elevate her to a different level altogether! The writing is sensitive, charming, witty and tragic at the same time. And the surrounding performances are beautifully studied too! It's a lovely surprise all around! My wife was concerned it would be too much of a "chick" show. It isn't! The subject matter is universal! We've all been there, on each side of the equation. Give it a watch! You won't regret it!
Vienna Blood (2019)
WHY the Lydgate recast????!!!
This show had a lot going for it and the character relationships made sense. Then...out of the blue they recast the very intricate and fascinatingly reserved, Miss Lydgate. Jessica de Gouw. Was superb! She was older than Max but that was the fascination. She has a history...a reserved behavior that keeps us guessing. She's also beautiful and beguiling. The recast is very sweet, I'm sure, but the entire dynamic of the main characters has been blown!! She's skittish, young and frankly, uninteresting. In short, the character is boring and irritating. This was a blunder extrordinaire! That particular "beat" has gone! Destroyed by someone's stupidity and poor judgment that undermined the quality of the story!
Craith (2018)
Extremely underrated!
One of those frustratingly good shows that will never get the praise it deserves...because it's Welsh and not mainstream. The acting, directing and most importantly, the writing, is excellent! Beautifully played and superbly shot! I feel privileged to have seen this and thank Acorn TV in the US for giving me access to such fine television!
The Chelsea Detective (2022)
Very enjoyable with unique characters
My wife and I loved this show. As an ex-pat now living in Los Angeles but born and bred in Chelsea, it holds a special place in my heart. The characters are uniquely quirky and the stories are good and often surprising. Can't wait for Season Two!
Unforgotten (2015)
Outstanding series
A brilliantly written, acted and directed series. Nicola Walker is such a wonderfully subtle and real actress. The first season is a who's who of top British theatre and television talent. Gripping episodes which are literally exhaustingly stressful to watch...but in a really good way!! Highly recommend!
