Ajeossi (2010)
What a film should be, 2 hours of compressed art expression
For me there are a bunch of films that leave an impression later after soaking in the scenes and pondering on them for a while. Most of blockbuster films usually have one (or more) notes that comes off wrong and ruins the entire orchestra, leaving a bad taste and wishing I could just forget it forever. Some films have less spikes and are easier to watch without getting overtly jolted. Some really have a nice overall tune that I would probably go as far to say I would purchase the Blu-ray film to support the creators. Then there are some really well made films that fit the bill perfectly and even surprise when you least expect it. Yup you guessed this film is just great from beginning to end. The highlights are the realistic fighting scenes that use real world gravity, and the camera shots that are crystal clear. The film is raw and exposes real world problems like drugs, prostitution and child exploitation. Would be a 10/10 but in reality it's a 9.5/10 due to the extreme violence that our hero retorts to for immediate justice. Also, the hero persona more than likely caters to an Asian market while in the west it may seem different. Overall, this film needs to be played in theaters and needs some awards so that a wider audience may praise it and we may all be jolly in agreement.
Unbroken (2014)
I am a sucker for anything Japanese packaged by western media.
Saw this film like I usually do, in the background while doing something else. The film I must admit is forgettable, however, the tone, pace and excellent climatic moment was worth the price of admission. Few films grab my full attention and this film falls into that category of background noise. This film is more of a rental than an actual Blu-Ray purchase, but a must watch! Oh, how can I forget that this is a A. Jolie film, which was a big surprise for a casual movie watcher as myself. Kudos to females who make good products in a mostly male dominant market.
John Carter (2012)
Underrated, enjoyable, family friendly fun.
Saw it without any expectations while doing something else on the computer and was pleasantly surprised. Has that Disney magic leaking through the seams. Great acting from the cast. Entertaining Sci- fi/fantasy concepts. All those other blockbuster hits just don't cut it with their cheap one liners, meaningless explosions, and pointless screenshots. One of the few movies that I can watch over and over again without getting a sick feeling in the pit of the stomach due to mediocre direction/production attempt. This is really a 7/10 (solid, pop in and play film) but bumped to and 8 due to the lack of recognition it deserves.
Umi yori mo mada fukaku (2016)
Exposes the nakedness of a desperate man doing the best he can to earn the respect of his post divorce family..
Loved the raw picture of a modern culture in which people are getting by with 1000 year tradition behind them yet battling new world problems. As if a piece of a puzzle, you witness just one unit of this society politely confronting each other with themes of death, separation, ego, love, and trust. The film's tone, tempo, picture was pleasant and the story unfolded well. I guess I'm the target audience age group so the resonance struck well with this film.
