Psychonauts 2 (2021)
A worthy sequel to a cult classic
Psychonauts 2 somehow manages to meet and exceed the expectations I ever hoped for a sequel. This is a "hall-of-fame"-worthy platformer with so much story and character it will make Super Mario look like a russian novel in comparison. The writing in dialogues stands out as being exceptionally good. I don't typically make it a point to talk to NPCs, but Psychonauts 2 had me talking to everyone I could find, just to hear what they would say. This is a behavior that only Tim Schafer games seem to get out of me.
The game plays much like it did in the original, but with tightened controls and enhanced combat Psychonauts 2 improves on almost everything that made the original fun and engaging. That includes some of the most creative level design I have ever seen.
Recommended.
Death Stranding (2019)
A profound masterpiece that I can't even believe exist in todays landscape of triple-A games.
The point of this game is that is is better to try to reduce the suffering of others instead of just worrying about your own suffering.
Lots of "choose your own adventure" style of games attempt to make a point that your choices have consequences. In Death Stranding you definitely will feel this. Even better, the choices of others will have an even bigger impact on you.
When you find yourself in a difficult situation, like having to cross a large crevasse carrying precious cargo, seeing another player already having put down a bridge fills you with gratitude. This feeling of gratitude is part of one of the core messages of this game.
The game is a mechanical marvel, with lots of menu systems. Never in my wildest dreams would I imagine how stimulating it could be to walk from A to B. Every step needs to be considered by the player. I would spend a considerable amount of time studying the map, looking for an optimal route and planning what equipment I would need for a mission. For those that dismissed the game for being purely a "walking simulator", I urge your to reconsider. There is too much action, tension, awe and meaning in this game to simply reduce it to a "walking simulator"
The game is certainly not for everyone, but it definitely hit the spot for me. 10/10.
