Bloodline Killer (2024)
New Horror Icon to Have Nightmares About
If you like spilling your popcorn every time an uncomfortable suspense builds into an explosive jump scare or wicked kill, this is the movie for you. The setting is its own beautifully troubled character, the kind of small suburbia we both reminisce over and are simultaneously haunted by. Brilliant decision to start the film in a Jordan Peele - esque prologue where the safety of a hometown turns bleak in a heartbeat. Don't be surprised if the movie makes you pause in the middle to check your windows and lock your doors :) I can't wait for the sequel and I hope the franchise continues to top itself each time out.
What's My Name Again? (2023)
Movies like they used to make
'What's My Name Again' comes alive from the opening title sequence, taking you back to a simpler time of surf, VW bugs, and the familiar muddiness of stepping into adulthood.
The film expertly navigates the very internal, very human condition elements of identity, character, and self-discovery in a way that empathizes us with the ensemble cast and leaves us questioning whether or not any of us 'really' have it all figured out.
First-time director Spencer Zender is fearless with his visual story-telling, finding comfort in the discomfort, while accomplishing one of the most challenging aspects of filmmaking -- communicating characters' stakes to the audience's consciousness. In short, it's compelling because WE CARE.
