The Hateful Eight (2015)
Tarantino genius!
Tarantino affirms a genius in this film with all his tastes. I found this mystery worthy of a story of Agatha Christie with Tarantinesque treatment. sensational. Technically the film is perfect, the photograph is beautiful, the use of the 70 mm is incredible, and some effects of makeup are simply incredible. The script of the film is very well developed, we have excellent dialogues, very characteristic of the Tarantino, the story is told with great calm, the slower pace helps the public to digest the story and try to solve the mystery. The film is really quite slow, in the first half of the film practically no action occurs, we are presented to the characters, all very well written and acted, the mystery letters are thrown at the table, we still take several discussions on different points of view on the Civil War (1861-1865). Even though the film is very slow in this first half, it is impossible to take the eye off the screen, as we see several discussions and a tension grow between the characters. Here we come to the second half of the film, where there is an abrupt change of tone. We had a slower first part where tension between the characters was developed but in the second part the movie explodes in a whirlwind utraviolent, where the characters enter a brutal confrontation in several scenes that shock even the strongest of the viewer.Even the focus of the film in this part is to show the violence, the mystery is not abandoned and remains the central factor of the plot. But this second part falls in quality compared to the first, especially when the film stops to explain what happened in the cabinet before the protagonists arrive. The scenes are good, but it takes the impact of the end of the film, which, while excellent, does not have the impact it should have. As already mentioned, the cast of the film is incredible, there is not a weak actor in the film, but Walton Goggins and Jennifer Jason Leigh (Oscar nominee for best supporting actress for that role), these two are the highlight of the film. Another thing that is praiseworthy is the Ennio Morricone (which won the Oscar for this film), which gives the whole tone of the film. I recommend that you watch this movie on the largest possible screen, to enjoy the beautiful photograph.
Oliver! (1968)
ridiculous
Carol Reed was a genius, he was the man who conceived The Third Man and The Fallen Idol, great movie thrillers. So the director who made one of the biggest noir movies in film history, decides to adapt, the "classic" by Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist, book that I do not particularly like. The film is full of mistakes, starting with the idea of transforming Dickens' work into a musical full of light and color with hectic choreography, in order to soften the tone of the work, deserves a seal of ridicule. The villainy of Fagins is another factor that has gone bad in the film, even the character itself is misunderstood by Ron Moody. Mark Lester, the protagonist of the film is very annoying. There is no memorable song (even Chicago has memorable music). And Carol Reed seems to have made the movie just to get some money to renovate the bathroom, it's obvious his bad luck. The pace is too much (I almost slept). At least the set design and costumes save the film. I did not understand the Oscars that this movie won, okay, Carol Reed's even I understand, it was more of his work, but, he won in place of Kubrick with 2001: A Space Odyssey was a gross slut from the academy. The other five Oscars should be why the year's voters were drugged. Anyway, ridiculous.
Child's Play 3 (1991)
The weaker film of the killer doll
Ending the trilogy of Chcuky we have this third part that definitely does not work. The production of the film is very mediocre, the visual effects in animatronics are quite rough compared to the other two films, the direction of art and photography do not impress in any moment. Writer Dom Mancini says that because of studio pressure he had to write the script in a hurry to get it released just nine months after the second film. This only proves the lack of creativity in the story. The biggest problem of the film is the fact that it can not interest in any moment, besides the film being a bummer. The script is a complete abomination and the performances, besides being completely exaggerated, generate laughter in situations that were to be tense. If there is anything that works in this film it is Brad Dourif's voice work, which is really exceptional. Other than that, it's a boring and uninteresting movie.
Child's Play 2 (1990)
A sequel to a horror movie definitely better than its predecessor
We have here a continuation of horror film that manages to be superior to its predecessor. Again, the highlight of the film is production, photography, visual effects, art direction, locations and scenarios, everything again is of an absurd and even better quality than the first film. And again without a doubt, the voice work of Brad Dourif is a spectacle to the part. The film may not have the most original story of the movie but it manages to be more energetic and tense than the first film, just because an adopted child occupies the position of protagonist of the film, which makes things reasonably more tense, And also mentioning the performance of Alex Vincent who also steals the scene for him. The director here seems much more inspired by the film, all the directing work is far superior to the first film. But we still have some problems, the supporting cast remains weak, we have some nonsense scenes and also the ridiculous attempt to make the film take itself seriously, but here we have some black humor. I emphasized the positive aspects of the film because it is much better than the previous one and because I did not like it very much, my expectations were very low, but it is a predictable film, definitely forgettable and narratives relapsed.
Child's Play (1988)
A film that many consider a masterpiece of horror, but it is only acceptable.
Considered by many a masterpiece, Child's Play is a film that has an excellent production value, all the effects of Chucky's animatronics; The somber, but high-quality photography; The locations and the scenarios chosen. All the production is of the highest quality. Also worth mentioning is the exceptional voice work of Brad Dourif and the good deaths. But this exceptional production value and Brad Dourif's extraordinary minimal work is compensated with a functional but not a bit original and inspired direction; A weak supporting cast. But the fatal point of the film is the script, which is counting on absurd and ridiculous situations and wants the audience to be scared and take it seriously.
Atlantic (1929)
Although technically fascinating to my mind, is a sleepy movie that does not matter in any way
E.A. Dupont was a great director, he made great silent films. But if we compare this film with other films of his career, this is one of the weakest. Starting with the dreadful direction, we have long segments with a completely static camera and that are basically a filmed theater, does not work and sleep. The cast is even quite competent for the time the film was made, since we were still in a time of transition from the cinema to the theater, other than this was one of the first films spoken. But if we look at them today, they will be too much caricature and theatricality. Technically the movie redeems itself, the sound design is very good, and, although rough, the shipwreck scenes are interesting. But I think it's a boring movie. I do not recommend unless you want to combat your insomnia.
