The Gate II: Trespassers (1990)
The hinges have definitely fallen off this Gate
Sadly, despite some decent creature effects ranging from an actor in a demon costume to old school stop-motion animation, Gate II offers very little to the viewer with it's sub-standard storyline and dull characters. One never really feels that the four teens are in that great a danger...and the low budget seems to have had a greater affect on the production this time around. A surprisingly disappointing sequel (considering that the 1987 original was so well done) that is recommended for the unwavering, die-hard Gate fan only. Gate II was filmed in 1989 but sat on the shelf for three years until the resolution of distribution problems earned it a limited (yet ultimately unsuccessful) theatrical release in 1992.
House (1985)
The Greatest American House?
Man...this has got to be one of the greatest 'b' movies of ALL time. It certainly is MY favorite that's for sure (coming in at No.1 on my top ten list of cult-classic movies) and was apparently the most profitable picture ever to come out of former distributor New World Picture's line-up back in 1985 ($3 million dollar budget that turned over $40 million in it's first week of release...or something like that...HUGE! Well...for 1985 anyway!) It has everything you could want in a supernatural horror/ comedy as well...laughs, action, monsters (if that is indeed your 'scene') and is quite definitely William Katt's finest hour. This is his best work since 'The Greatest American Hero'...and why he did not win some kind of award for it is beyond me. No one does it quite like our former beloved Ralph Hinkley. Heh! I've placed this film in my cult hit hall of fame alongside other movies such as: 'The Gate' 'Trick or Treat' 'Pumpkinhead' and 'The Monster Squad'.
What a line-up...I'm in hog heaven :-D
Trick or Treat (1986)
Rock's chosen warriors will rule the apocalypse
Being a genre film fan, a child of the 80's AND a fan of hard rock music...this movie holds a special place in my heart. It has everything you could want in a supernatural movie: action, great special effects (for 1986) and a guitar wailing glam- rock soundtrack. It certainly was THE movie for all the heavy metal fans at the time. I didn't see this at the cinema because it was never released theatrically over here...but it's popularity on video during the mid to late eighties secured it's cult status and eventually led to a (sadly, mediocre) DVD release in 2002. If you're not a fan of creepy movies or rock music then this probably isn't your cup of tea...but, trust me, there are worse films of this type out there...and, despite average acting and some outrageously ridiculous situations, Trick or Treat is most definitely a wailing riff above the usual horror fare. You'll never look at your stereo the same way again. Or should I say MP3 player?
TRICK OR TREAT TRIVIA- Marc Price (Eddie) played geeky Skippy Handelman on the popular long running comedy sitcom 'Family Ties.' After a string of direct to video flops including, 'Little Devils''Killer Tomatoes eat France' and 'The Rescue' he gave up on acting to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. Recently, he has been considering a TV comeback.
Glen Morgan (Roger) is now a major Hollywood producer/ screenwriter. He has written and produced several major films and TV series, including: 'Space: Above and Beyond''The X-Files''Final Destination''Jet Li's The One''Willard' and most recently 'Final Destination 3'.
Tony Fields (Sammi) started his performing career as a dancer on the TV series 'Solid Gold'. He appeared in several low budget films and TV shows before landing his breakout role as the devilish Sammi Curr in 'Trick or Treat'. Sadly, Tony passed away on February 27th 1995 of AIDS related cancer.
Doug Savant (Tim) is probably best remembered for his pioneering role of homosexual twentysomething Matt Fielding on the popular sitcom 'Melrose Place'. Since then he has had a long and varied acting career, appearing in such films and TV series as: 'The One''Godzilla''CSI: Crime Scene Investigation' and the short lived Joss Whedon sci-fi series 'Firefly'. Currently he can be seen as Tom Scavo on the smash hit series 'Desperate Housewives'.
The Monster Squad (1987)
I'm in the goddamn club aren't I?
Ahh, yes...the eighties, I remember it well. The flamboyant outfits, the far out hairstyles, David Lee Roth embarking on a solo career...who could forget? It was indeed a most singular and unique decade (one that some of us older folks try hard to forget.) Yeah, okay...I wore the slashed black jeans with the Judas Priest logo stitched onto the front pocket...but let's not go CRAZY because I did, it was all the rage back then. As far as eighties MOVIES go, I think that one in particular stands out above all others of it's type. Although, I must admit with shame that I had forgotten all about it. Then, one night, whilst taking part in a cinema trivia game the following question was asked of me, "What eighties movie featured a bunch of kids battling against Dracula, The Wolfman, The Mummy and Frankenstein?" It was at this point that it all came flooding back, "Oh yeah, that's right" I yelled excitedly, "The Monster Squad!" Who could forget those six determined teens duking it out with Gill Man and those three vampire vixens in the middle of town square? I mean...seriously, those kids were in way over their heads. But...as luck, a 5 year old virgin and a script with a happy ending would have it...they prevailed. Woo hoo! The Monster Squad is secretly filed away in the 'guilty pleasure' section of my mind...and even though it emphatically raises the question, "What age group is this aimed at?" I shall enjoy it for many more years to come. What a movie! Bravo Mr. Dekker...bravo! By the way...whatever happened to Ryan Lambert anyway?
