Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
A Disastrous Journey That Should Have Stayed Buried
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny promised to reignite the magic and adventure of the beloved franchise, but instead, it delivered an abysmal disappointment that should have remained buried deep within Hollywood's catacombs. This film managed to tarnish the legacy of the iconic Indiana Jones series in the most spectacularly disastrous way.
First and foremost, the plot was an incomprehensible mess. It seemed as if the writers threw together random ideas without any consideration for coherence or logic. The story meandered aimlessly, leaving viewers bewildered and struggling to find any semblance of enjoyment. Even die-hard Indiana Jones fans will be left scratching their heads, wondering how such a promising concept could be so poorly executed.
The character development was equally pitiful. Harrison Ford's portrayal of Indiana Jones, once a charismatic and charming adventurer, felt tired and uninspired. Gone was the wit and charm that made the character so beloved, replaced with a lackluster and lethargic performance that seemed like Ford was simply going through the motions. The supporting cast fared no better, with forgettable and one-dimensional characters that failed to engage the audience in any meaningful way.
One of the most egregious offenses of this film was the complete disregard for the established Indiana Jones mythology. The previous movies were known for their attention to historical accuracy and cultural sensitivity, but Dial of Destiny threw all of that out the window. It was as if the filmmakers prioritized spectacle over substance, resorting to cheap CGI effects and mindless action sequences that lacked any sense of adventure or thrill.
Furthermore, the pacing of the film was utterly atrocious. It dragged on at a snail's pace, with scenes that overstayed their welcome and failed to contribute anything meaningful to the overall narrative. The action sequences, when they did occur, were poorly choreographed and lacked any real tension or excitement. It felt like the filmmakers were ticking off a checklist of Indiana Jones tropes without understanding what made them successful in the first place.
Lastly, the dialogue was embarrassingly cringe-worthy. The witty banter and memorable one-liners that characterized the previous films were replaced with clunky, uninspired lines that fell flat. It was a painful reminder of how far this franchise had fallen, and an insult to the intelligence of the audience.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is a prime example of how not to revive a beloved franchise. It disregards everything that made the original movies great and replaces it with a convoluted mess of a plot, lackluster performances, and uninspired action sequences. Save yourself the disappointment and skip this disastrous journey altogether. Indiana Jones deserves better, and so do the fans.
Star Trek (2009)
Disappointing Departure from the Franchise's Essence"
As a longtime fan of the Star Trek franchise, I had small hope when I heard that J. J. Abrams would be helming the 2009 reboot and I refused to watch it until the year 2023 when I decided to watch all the Trek films and it was just as awful as I thought it would be. This is exactly what JJ did to Star Wars just a few short years later which is making people think they saw something great until people went back and watched it and realized he created something hollow which destroyed the franchise.
One of the biggest issues with Abrams' vision for Star Trek was the blatant disregard for established canon and the rich history of the original series. Instead of respecting the source material and building upon its foundation, Abrams opted for a complete overhaul, effectively erasing decades of storytelling. This decision may have served as a fresh starting point for newcomers, but it left loyal fans feeling alienated and robbed of the very essence that made Star Trek special.
The film's plot was convoluted and contrived, relying heavily on flashy action sequences rather than a thoughtful exploration of the human condition, which was a hallmark of the original series. It seemed as though Abrams was more interested in catering to the mainstream audience by cramming the film with explosions, lens flares, and over-the-top spectacle. This shallow approach undermined the intellectual and philosophical themes that were integral to Star Trek's appeal, reducing it to just another generic blockbuster.
Moreover, the characters in Abrams' Star Trek lacked depth and development. While the original series' crew members were multifaceted and complex, the reboot's characters felt like mere caricatures of their former selves. Captain James T. Kirk, played by Chris Pine, lacked the charisma and leadership qualities that defined William Shatner's portrayal. Spock, portrayed by Zachary Quinto, lacked the emotional depth and internal struggle that Leonard Nimoy brought to the character. The supporting cast suffered a similar fate, reduced to one-dimensional archetypes that failed to resonate with audiences.
Perhaps the most egregious misstep was the introduction of time travel as a narrative device to reset the Star Trek universe. This lazy plot device was an insult to the intelligence of the audience and a blatant cop-out. It undermined the intricate continuity and interconnectedness of the original series and films, essentially erasing the impact and significance of the events that came before.
In terms of visual effects and production design, Star Trek (2009) delivered on its promises. The action sequences were visually stunning, and the sleek and modernized USS Enterprise was undeniably impressive. However, these superficial aspects couldn't compensate for the film's glaring narrative shortcomings and its failure to capture the spirit of exploration and philosophical contemplation that made Star Trek a cultural phenomenon.
In the end, J. J. Abrams' Star Trek may have attracted a new generation of fans with its flashy visuals and fast-paced action, but it sacrificed the very essence of the franchise. By disregarding canon, shallow characterizations, and a lackluster plot, Abrams delivered a film that failed to honor the legacy of Star Trek and left long-time fans yearning for the thought-provoking and intellectually stimulating stories that defined the series.

Andor: The Axe Forgets (2022)
Would have been good on the bonus features of the DVD
It's like watching deleted scenes for a TV show. Once again, another episode of Andor pretends it's clever by being slow when it's just slow to fill and pad out their twelve-episode contract.
How on earth did this get twelve episodes when Mandalorian, Book of Boba Fett, and OBI-WAN GOD DAMN KENOBI! Get less than ten episodes a season. What is going on at Disney Plus and, more specifically, Lucasfilm?
At the most, this should be six episodes, pushing it. Let's be honest most people couldn't name a single character in this show, excluding Andor, and even then, they may get confused and think the show is about the planet Endor which would have more commercial appeal and have more of a story to work with.
I'm done with this show and have given it more than a fair shake. It started to move somewhat in Episode 3 before stopping at a screeching halt in Episode 4.
Andor: That Would Be Me (2022)
Beautiful but boring
I'm sorry a good show doesn't need 3 episodes to hook someone.
It should be done in Episode 1 in the first 5 minutes which is a shame since it's the best looking Star Wars TV show. Unfortunately while the characters feel real, they lack personality.
Andor is a charisma vacuum. The first 2 episodes could have been severely edited down to just 15 minutes and used as flashbacks. I get the idea of slow burn but you need dynamic characters to pull that off(AMC's Better Call Saul is a great example of a show that is slow burn but accomplishes so much with that approach.
Nice try Lucasfilm but this just isn't it.
