An Inconvenient Truth (2006)
Important movie
This film of course is a very important one - for the United States....not so much for places like the EU or Japan. Since they have been establishing tough (but more than justified rules) concerning the preservation of nature, the USA have not by any means met standards that are worth of a major industrialized society. I was shocked to see that in the USA there is in fact a discussion whether global warming is a true phenomenon or rather an urban legend of the "radical environmentalists and the radical left". But the film itself was not entirely convincing. The first thing that bothered me about it was a chart that showed the increase of CO2 emission over a certain time (i don't remember exactly which period was covered, but it's of no importance right now). The thing was: there were no units on either axis! So the chart can be stretched and formed however wished. While I believe that the issue of global warming is a very urgent and true one, it does not help to work with semi-scientific data! The other thing was that Al Gore quoted "a friend of mine", or "my friend" quite often. If i get any quotes I'd like to know by whom. It would have been better to actually name them. The same thing happened with "2 major studies". Instead of just calling them studies he should have named them. The best solution (which also would not have interrupted his speech) would have been to just show the name of the scientist and the information on his study in the corner of the screen so that interested persons can actually get additional information on his resources.
But, and that I must say: Thanks to Al Gore for finally trying to get the US society to get information on the catastrophe we are all heading at if we don't act to preserve the earth!
Finally: have you seen the propaganda-videos of the oil-lobby which is actually propagating the increase of CO2? Just google for "They call it pollution. We call it life." or search for "Global Warming" on youtube. Videos made and distributed by "CEI.org". If it weren't so incredibly irresponsible it would be really funny!
Meet the Feebles (1989)
Epic ending sequence
This movie as a whole to me is one of the best movies ever made. It gives an excellent parody of the show business and the weird characters and events ongoing in it. In this way it is timeless. It may be disputed that some of the scenes are mere disgusting, but then again: It's Peter Jackson in the old days. Whoever has seen Dead Alive or Bad Taste would know that this is part of the low-budget Peter Jackson movies. But: The final sequence in which Heidi massacres the members of the variety show with the machine gun while Sebastian is singing his "Sodomy"-song - this sequence can only be described as epic. This could not have been made any better! While of course Peter Jackson himself welcomes his work on biggest-budget blockbusters (like LOTR and King Kong) I am sad that the audience has lost one of the greatest directors of independent cinema to the dull blockbusters he's busy with now.
The Princess & the Marine (2001)
Pure ignorance
This is a horrible movie that shows that the director/producer/actors did not at all bother find out about a culture they are talking about.
This movie is full of flaws and displays a totally wrong picture of the Arabic/Muslim culture. Even the infrastructure of Bahrain is shown as old/poor with camels and stuff.
Any person who ever has seen any of the gulf countries (some of the richest countries in the world) will see that the infrastructure is in much better shape and way more modern that in the US or western Europe...
And no attention is given to the fact that the adult marine is actually having his love-affair with a minor, which is not romantic, but disgusting.
This movie really just makes me wanna puke my guts out!
Disgusting, simplistic and manipulative!
The Chumscrubber (2005)
Pretty good
This is certainly one of the better movies. It's dark and emphasizes on how the people of modern suburbia are preoccupied with keeping up a charade of a healthy society while neglecting the reality and its personal relations. The way the story is told is certainly interesting, but not all actors performed the way it would be expected. Especially the captive "Charly" and Justin Chatwin were not showing an extraordinary performance. In independent filmes noir there is a history of having very good surreal sequences. In this movie the sequences of the chumscrubber were not particularly convincing. Those "imaginary" sequences are much more convincing in established classics like for example "Donnie Darko" (which is one of THE best movies in cinematic history). Nevertheless, disregarding the chumscrubber sequences, this is a pretty interesting and well-made movie which certainly is worthwhile watching.
