A Instant Monster Classic
15 December 2023
This film is the reason why Japanese versions of Japanese IP will always be superior to Hollywood remakes. The story telling and emotional connection brought by this movie was something I was truly shocked by as it was far deeper than I had expected even though I had seen a few reviews prior to seeing the movie.

It did something that Hollywood has constantly failed to do with its' monster movie; Godzilla -1.0 actually made you care about the actors in it. They weren't just there to add in some dialogue, they were the movie.

The Godzilla look itself was true to the Japanese version of Godzilla with a very modern update. The reactive spine looked amazing right before Godzilla shoots off his super weapon. And the destruction it created was a sight to behold.

This is a movie that deserves to be seen on a big screen but if you're waiting for it to come out on video or streaming; make a night of it and make sure you have a sound system that can handle it.

It may not get a fair shake....
9 February 2023
This was an interesting new edition to Netflix, one that I didn't burn through in a couple of days like some series I will binge through. A premise that could seem like it wouldn't work out that well because of "bad writing" but this show capably does it right enough to keep the audience entertained without too much teenage troupe. The story is simple of ghosts being real and a government department has been set up to deal with it. A MIB kind of thing. Teens with special gifts being called upon to hunt down malevolent spirits using more commonly known instruments you will have seen in past movies.

With a relatively unknown cast with some having next to no acting credits to mention. They all do a wonderful job portraying the characters they are meant to. I no nothing of the source material from which it comes from; so I have nothing to have whether or not they are true to it.

I do not know if this will be green lit for a second season even though it definitely has been left open for one but I do hope more watch it so that it does. But this is on Netflix and who knows.

Faster paced but less suspenseful
23 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This was a decent follow-up to the 2018 A Quiet Place and continues the story as well as filled in some unanswered questions. I'm glad that this movie was made just so answers were fleshed out with the most obvious one of where did these noise hunters come from.

The answer of where did these creatures come from was slightly answered by showing the audience what looked liked meteorites crashing to the earth but may be spacecrafts but don't see. One question that did bother me from the first one as well but far more with this one given the carnage; I'm not sure why the creatures are killing everything making noise. At no point do we ever see them eating anything, just kill and kill.

It was smart to see that the writers did have a believable idea as to how they would deal with the infant and all the crying baby's do. In the end, nothing done here would be out of the realm of possibility if this were true.

This movie ends up being a movie of redemption for many of the characters involved and funny enough the final showdown gave me major Stranger Things S4 vibes. Overall you can see the bigger budget involved and the ramp up with each movie but even the last won't live up to the suspense-fullness of the first.

A twist on the silent horror movies of old
17 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I have always been meaning to watch this at some point but just never got into the mood. I'm glad I did get to it today.

I did know what had happened at the end as it has been impossible to avoid spoilers for 4yrs and I had seen the trailer for the second movie. It was still a fun ride. There was also some very obvious plot directions with the character Regan being deaf and the monsters hunting by sound, you knew that would play into it.

Credit does need to go to the whole cast as doing an entire 90min movie with maybe 5 minutes of talking. Having to rely the story through eyes and facial gestures is no easy task. It takes talent to do that.

This is movie number 2 of the Halloween 2022 cinema fest and I can't wait to see some more.

A mashup of werewolf movies
17 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is my first Halloween movie of 2022 to start my run and this was ok.

Interesting idea which has grabbed from many different werewolf lore from multiple sources. Now this isn't a traditional hairy, howl at the moon werewolf story and even on all fours it does look more vampire-ish than werewolf but it is indeed one. Using the 30 pieces of silver as the curse and cure has also been brought up before.

The acting is ok for what it is and what the actors have to work with. It is strange that they decided to not even pretend to have a French accent for any of the characters given this takes place in France.

Overall if you're looking for milder gory movie for Halloween, give this one a shot.

Another meh movie by Netflix
9 October 2022
This movie has as much bite as a juvenile vamp fangs bring in $$$. Nothing here you won't have seen before in other movies, B movies most likely.

The performances are as expected with some really believing this will be a hit given the name power involved in this project. The plot is simple which does help this movie so it's not bogged down in trying to be something more than what it is. There are some plot holes that annoyingly are left wide freaking open to the point that no one brings it up at all past the moment. I've always liked Dave Franco but he needs to start really focusing on his evolution as an actor. All his characters are so similar and given his age; doesn't really work at all. Having Snoop Dogg in any movie is always a good thing and he's plays his part quite well.

Over all, if you're bored or looking for something to watch in October that's isn't overly realistically gory or scary but would do well as an October viewing; give this one a shot.

Terrific idea.....
9 August 2022
This was a terrific idea for a Predator movie and reminds me of how much I enjoyed a similar movie in Outlander.

There are things that don't make this movie perfect but I'd say my biggest gripe is that it isn't subtitled. The English language-izing takes away from what could be a really good movie.

There were some very cliche plots throughout but nothing that was eye-rolling inducing.

I am glad that this is getting good reviews and hopefully may spawn similar movies in the future beyond the Predator franchise. This is the kind of movie that can show the big companies that you can take a old idea and refresh it instead of the recycled remakes we've been getting.

Good for background noise
15 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Such a disappointment that they thought this was a good route to go with this franchise after so many successful movies prior.

CGI was not up to today's standards and I'd say the monster creation looked more realistic during the first movie back in 2002.

I know that there has to be a bit of Hollywood make believe with this kind of film and reality is far from the truth but come on, shooting an RPG in a small confined space and no one gets hurt but the bad guy dies?

It's such a shame because you know all the actors thought they hit is big time with this series but I'd be shocked if a second came out.

Game of Viking Thrones
12 March 2022
WARNING* Minor spoilers included but very little of plot given away.

I enjoyed this first season. It was quite a fun ride.

In many ways this reminded me a lot of Game of Thrones in the sense of the betrayals littered throughout. You're never really sure which side the sub characters will be on and I find some characters are almost cloudy mirror images of GOT characters.

There were some things I was a bit confused over not with what happened but with the overall story. Whose story is it? Is it Leif's or Frida's? I'm sure the show runners and cast will say it is about both of their stories but I can't see that really continuing forward if this progresses past season 3. They follow Leif far more than Frida but it was Frida's quest for vengeance that brought them there in the first place and she is the main person in the big dual. The final battle itself was choreographed nicely but also done in a realistic budget friendly way. I'd be willing to bet that if you could scan all the extras faces you'd see they died multiple times.

It is weird to see the brutality inflicted all in the name of Christ and God given some of the acts committed you would think that there is no chance in Hell they would be welcomed through the pearly gates. I also know that many atrocities have been committed under the banner of "God", no matter which way you worship.

I don't know if this appease the original Vikings fan base but for newcomers; I think you'll enjoy this.

Old school animation
1 March 2022
I absolutely love this style of animation. And of course it brings up those old Disney animation from way back feels. Sure many those older cartoons are ripe with stereotypes and racial insensitive caricatures but the style of animation is quite unique. It is truly something special that isn't done anymore. Closest thing I could think of is Animaniacs.

It is funny how a punishing video game no one ever expected has developed a massive following which in turn is the reason we get these wonderful episodes. I hope this is a success for Netflix and that we'll get more in the future.

Interesting show but strange.....
6 February 2022
I've seen many reviews from those who are fans of the novel series and from what I've seen this show stays much truer to the source material than the Tom Cruise movie versions. For that I commend the show writers on this. However, I do feel that Tom Cruise did a better job making me believe that he was a former military cop and a brilliant investigator. I am a huge fan of Alan Ritchson ever since I first was introduced to him in Blue Mountain State. He does a wonderful job as Jack Reacher in this but the show never really shows him as that same kind of investigator and don't write him that way. They make him more of a lumbering oaf with some investigative instincts. This show made me really think of Rambo more so. Especially with the body count.

Overall I enjoyed binge watching this show and I hope we get a season 2 but with less known actors. Picking out the villains given who they were really, was too easy.

Interesting and fun
9 December 2021
So I will be reviewing as someone who has zero connection or knowledge of the source material this show is produced from.

This to me was a fun show overall but not without its problems too. I'll say my 2 biggest gripes about this are that John Cho is such an odd character to play fearless in the sense I've never seen him do this kind of action before. Perhaps he is true to the character and does a good job of portraying him. Now this isn't me bashing him as I enjoy most of what the actor has done and he does a fine performance here as well. Secondly the actual hand to hand combat seemed off and far too choreographed; with that it seemed slow like everyone was thinking about the motions rather than them coming more naturally.

What I did enjoy was the noire settings giving that Blade Runner with a hint of the show/game Defiance to it. The idea of bounty hunters in the future which does have material out there for that genre but not as much as you'd think there might be on the small screen given how rich of a topic it could be.

All the main actors did a fine believable job in their roles with shoutouts going to Daniella Pineda as Faye and Alex Hassell as Vicious. It was also nice to see some familiar small screen sci-fi faces sprinkled throughout.

I'm sure this will, and by judging of some of the purist responses, not be for everyone or they may downright not like it at all for whatever reason including that it isn't like it's source material. From someone who knows nothing about said material, this was enjoyable but I fully understand if it isn't picked up for a second season.

Can Ryan Reynolds be too sarcastic?
14 November 2021
This was a fun movie to watch on Netflix. It met expectations but didn't exceed them. Disappointed that the chemistry between Ryan and Dwayne just wasn't up to par with what I had hoped given their brief encounter in Hobbs and Shaw. In many ways this reminded me The Rundown with many similar plot points. Then there is the whole Indiana Jones knock off the final act. I'm also pretty sure they did a call out to Raiders of the Lost Ark when Dwayne shined his flashlight at one specific box.

I'd say my biggest gripe is that Ryan was too sarcastic throughout the movie. I like his schtick but this was excessively written that way. I'm not sure he had one serious line throughout the whole movie.

Overall, if this movie had been released in the theatres; it would have bombed commercially but being on Netflix; it was a good time and I look forward to a sequel if Netflix deems that it brought in enough viewership to justify another.

A solid by the numbers marvel movie
13 November 2021
This is just a by the book, no surprises, Marvel movie. At the beginning it looked like it was almost made to be a tv show as the CGI compared to reality was quite noticeable. Not sure who thought this was the best fighting movie they have ever scene as to me, it would barely crack the top 5. It was still a fun movie overall but I don't think it would have been as well received in a normal non-COVID world compared to Black Panther. It's really hard to tell based off box office gross. I hope there is more to come.

Not bad, not great.
5 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is a mediocre action movie that isn't as good as it's predecessor but good enough to kill a couple of hours with if you're stuck on a plane or something. The real treat of the first one was the bickering between Ryan and Samuel. Now there is some of that but not nearly enough to make up for how boring the first half of the movie is.

When the real action starts, it makes up for the lack of humour in this movie. Even a surprise appearance by Morgan Freeman was a missed opportunity for a good chuckle. If they had gotten Kevin Costner as his dad, that would have made for a greater laugh than Samuel being surprised that Morgan was Ryan's dad (stepdad). The black thing was just low hanging fruit. A nod to Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston's "The Bodyguard" would have resonated more. This definitely felt more like a rushed movie to capitalize off the first movie's relative success as I'm sure if this had waited a year or 2, it definitely wouldn't have been made. This is not a full price movie but on a cheap day, sure. Better yet, wait till it streams.

Good movie but a prequel?
30 October 2021
This was a decent movie that was engaging to watch but ultimately much slower than it's predecessor. Which also makes this so much more of a head scratcher as to why they decided to do a prequel to Army of the Dead and focus on a sub-character, the safecracker. Why focus on him? Even the importance of the safe they hit in Army of the Dead isn't really touched on compared to Army of Thieves.

There's too much missing from the story as a whole to fully appreciate what Zack Synder as created. Perhaps the final instalment will iron out all the wrinkles.

(It is also weird that no one seems to care about a zombie apocalypse occurring in the US given out current landscape with viruses.)

So long Craig, Daniel Craig.
25 October 2021
This movie is mainly about letting Daniel Craig finish off the Bond franchise with some finality. In many ways it doesn't feel like a Bond movie, maybe Bond-lite.

It was weird watching the send off knowing partly, Daniel didn't really want to do this movie but also that it was his final outing as James Bond. It's crazy to think it's been 15yrs of Daniel Craig playing this character. This movie suffers from what many Bond movies and other franchises do; uninspiring villains that the audience doesn't really care about or will even remember. There was nothing wrong with Rami Malek's performance as the main villain but also nothing that remotely screamed "Amazing".

Overall this movie smacks right in the middle of the five Daniel Craig led James Bond. IMO the list would be: 1. Skyfall 2. Casino Royale 3. No Time To Die 4. Quantum of Solace 5. Spectre.

Honestly I would have preferred if Skyfall had been written more as the finale for Bond; the story would have been more congruent if it had.

The rated R hurt this movie
19 October 2021
This was a decent movie but no where near as intriguing as the Del Toro versions with Ron Perlman. The practical effects were more exciting with the creatures developed by Del Toro. Most of the creatures here are quite boring save for the mega demons that rise from Hell. Those CGI creations were at least more unique than a warthog, giants, & some little trolls/imps. The villains were also far superior to Milla Jovovich. Not that she did a bad job, just her character wasn't that interesting.

If you're a diehard Hellboy fan; I'm sure this movie enraged you especially if you were team Perlman. If you've never seen the others or know little about the comics it's derived from; you'll probably enjoy this.

American Pickers (2010– )

Fun while it lasted
12 October 2021
I have always enjoyed American Pickers since I first started watching it in 2012. I had never seen a show like it; the collectors, the inheritors, the bat crap crazy. It has always been interesting to see into the lives of so many people and the stuff or treasure, depending on your view, that they had. Seeing Mike's and Frank's excitement when they see a toy, bike, piece of history, something they have never seen before; it was like 2 kids in a toy store. That being said, it is a shame of bad of a falling out Mike and Frank have had in the past year over Frank's allegations after his back surgery. I don't know who is right or wrong but it is always sad when this kind of friendship ends this way. This is not like Mythbusters, where both Jamie and Adam really didn't like each other but managed to work on a show for years without any real public dust-ups; these 2 were actually friends travelling around buying stuff. Without Frank the show just isn't the same; having Danielle and Robbie on it in a far more prominent picking role never seemed right and still doesn't. They have had a wonderful decade of picking for entertainment but time for the show to end.

Fun and surprisingly emotional
4 October 2021
The was a fun, fascinating show that was more emotional than I ever expected it to be but also not as violent as I was expecting either. There is some brutal violence but extremely tolerable unless you are squeamish.

Many of the characters you will feel a connection to even if they aren't in the main cast. There are some you will enjoy getting their "come up'ins" to a satisfying end. The choices the lead characters make will enrage you and make you despise them but the backstory given to those characters will also make you understand why they do/did the things they do/did.

There isn't much in the way of surprises (except the hair, if you've finished you know what I mean) but there are some decent plot twists that may catch you off guard. The 6 games themselves, many across the world will know or may have even done; some you'll be like "really?". All are brutal by design. This is worth the watch and dubbing in English didn't look or sound as bad as it could have.

Fantastic
1 October 2021
This is a slow burn show but the ending is worth it. This isn't a show that drags its' feet and only reveals what this story is about at the very ending. The reveal is shown in episode 3 which makes all these reviews with people stating "I only watched the first 2 episodes and it's trash" look more foolish than all the uptight Trump loving bible thumpers who will never see the pearly gates with their hateful views.

This show is not only about faith and how misguided it can become when you blindly follow those who preach but a love story with a message of staying true to yourself in the midst of chaos and temptation. I'll even say some of the villains do this just as well as protagonists. Even some minor characters, which you would expect to flip flop stay true to themselves.

There really isn't anything that stands out in the way of performances when it comes to the main cast but I do see at least a couple of nominations for Hamish Linklater as Father Paul and Samantha Sloyan as Beverly Keane with the latter doing a wonderful job of making all the viewers dislike her from the very beginning.

I cannot say too much without giving away the whole back half of the series but I will say, give this a chance till the end of episode 3. You will then realize where the story is going and can decide if you wanna if you're gonna keep on watching. Please don't come on here to write a 1 star review after 1 episode. Do something better with your life and maybe read a book instead.

I loved it
29 August 2021
I throughly enjoyed this Robot Chicken-lite Marvel adventure. I'm a little surprised Disney even did this given the violence/gore/swearing shown throughout this series. It doesn't feel Disney-esc, more like a Netflix show. It definitely is, "what could the creators of Robot Chicken do with money and enough time to do a story?" And since Seth Green is an executive producer; it does make sense as to why this is so Robot Chicken-ie. Ignore the far right reviews where they only score to appease their low self-worth and enjoy this for what it is. It won't be for everyone but the people who don't watch the entire season and feel the need to put their 2 cents in are very uninformed. Those that watched it but didn't like it, fine to each their own. But at least they watched it.

An interesting concept
28 August 2021
This is a weird series for me; I actually started this series before Loki and F&WS but finished it last. The first 2 episodes, while interesting, didn't really pull me in as I didn't know where this story was going even with the episode teasers. It really wasn't till episode 4 that I found myself finally seeing the direction this series was going to take. This is definitely one of those slow burn kinda shows but once things get going they really get going. It becomes a more normal Marvel based property by episode 4 and frankly it was fun from that point on.

The big baddie reveal in episode 8 was terrific and the actress they hired to play her was brilliant. As I know very little of The Scarlet Witch lore; this did catch me off guard as I never read spoilers.

Did this really need to be 9 episodes? Probably not. Do I regret watching it? Definitely not. If you're a Marvel cinematic fan; this will be a must watch just to keep up with the whole universe as they always tie things together. I am looking forward to the next live action series with Hawkeye and perhaps the new Black Widow?. Till then I will watch MODOK and What If.

A fun horror
12 August 2021
I had a good time with this movie. I was getting strong The Cabin In The Woods vibes. In some ways the premise is very similar in the uniqueness of what the story was and how really simple the idea is. Here we basically have a game of literal Hide and Seek to the point of saving the family from death of a deal brokered many years before. Execute the bride to save them. Cabin in the Woods; execute certain people to appease a god so the world won't end. Now I know it may sound nothing alike but if you just break it down to the simplest story; they are alike.

Fun but too long
1 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is more of a toned down Jason Statham movie. Not quite the action we are used to seeing from him but it was still a fun ride nonetheless. It was a little excessively long though and probably could have used more time in the editing bay.

Honestly the most frustrating part which seem hard to believe considering how much time devoted to it was simply that this highly trained soldier kills the kid and shoots the dad and they have this long stare down as Statham lay "dying" yet the final action heist part this same trained soldier doesn't recognize him at all & they spend probably close to 30min fictional movie time together. There were some other parts that were head scratchers but it was still fun.
