K-PAX (2001)
8/10
Uplifting movie
16 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This has to be one of Kevin Stacey's best performances as Prot from the planet K-Pax. Jeff Bridges was excellent in a supporting role too as Prot's psychiatrist which showed a tender, caring side not really seen in any of his other roles. I learned/re-learned plenty from this movie and especially what each of us does to cope with traumatic events in our lives. Prot/Robert Porter comes home to find his wife and children brutally murdered so he creates a personna that's from another planet where relationships, love, family etc. Ate unnecessary and considered "primitive". What a creative way to come up with this character's way to cope with his incredibly traumatic experience. The writers did a wonderful job with. Gene Brewer's sci-fi novel and the whole story is so uplifting and yet terribly sad at times . It certainly got me in touch with my own unresolved pain/trauma and that was not a bad thing at all - quite the contrary actually. I watched K-Pax today and it's been years since I last saw it and would highly recommend it to anyone!

I was disturbed and intrigued at the same time - thank you David Cronenberg!
5 June 2022
I read the reviews, saw the trailer and the film turned out to be somewhat different than what I expected (good thing). There's a ton of themes in this movie and one of them certainly being the limitless boundaries humans have to experience intense pleasure. Themes about the future of humanity (bleak), climate change and how some things don't really change - greed, selfishness and self-absorption. The lighting throughout the movie was dark with very little hope (light) which I'm sure was by design. The reason I didn't give the film an 8 was because I found the ending kind of anti-climatic. The actors were superb especially Kristen Stewart and Viggo Mortensen.

Better Call Saul: Plan and Execution (2022)
Season 6, Episode 7
10/10
Oh... my... goodness!
30 May 2022
What an episode and I didn't see the ending of this episode coming at all. I won't give any spoilers but I will say this episode got a 10/10 from me as the "real" Jimmy and Kim kinda collectively "rear their ugly heads" so to speak. I have been rooting I suppose for Jimmy/Saul and Kim but the number they have done on Howard I think went way too far. I'm left thinking that the talent and abilities Kim and Jimmy have put into knocking down Howard a notch or two could be better spent on more "altruistic" endeavours. Anyway, Kim and Jimmy are NOT innocent victims and whatever consequences they face are well-earned. Then we have Lalo and his determination to get back at Gus "chicken man" Fring which knows no bounds and you'll see what I mean when you watch this episode. The bottom line for me is that Better Call Saul ranks in my top 5 all-time greatest TV series with of course Breaking Bad. I might even put BCS a notch above BB.

Killing Eve (2018–2022)
8/10
Season 4 started off poorly...
26 May 2022
... but picked up nicely after Episode 3. I found the remainder of the Season very entertaining. Seeing as I'm Canadian I am a bit biased as Sandra Oh too is Canadian and I've always thought that she's a good actor. I loved her in Sideways amd pretty much every film and TV show she's been in since. I think that she's done a great job of "growing" the character Eve in this series and I think that she and Jodie Comer created some excellent chemistry together. Obviously Killing Eve isn't for everyone but one the the main reasons I love the series is it's emphasis on strong, courageous, vulnerable and competent women! I'm a 60 year old dude and I love that about this series that shows that women really can do anything a man can do!

Dune (2021)
9/10
Outstanding!
9 May 2022
I guess as a Canadian I'm biased as when I heard that Denis Villeneuve was going to direct this film, I felt like Frank Herbert's Dune was in good hands. I wasn't disappointed! I don't think that I have ever rated a film a 10 as I think perfection just isn't possible however, this was close and if I could give a 9.9, I would. I have read all of Herbert's Dune books several times each - even his son Brian's prequels with the writing help of Kevin Ferguson too. I think Villeneuve caught the "mood" and "tone" of Dune - a world what, 20,000 plus years in our future? The actors chosen to take on the roles of the key characters were superb - especially Timothée Chalamet as Paul, Stellan Skarsgård is superb as the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. Jason Mamoa plays an excellent Duncan Idaho while Josh Brolin plays Gurney Halleck pretty much as my mind's imagination saw him. Zendaya (get out with the one name young lady) plays an excellent Chani and I really liked the fact Villenueve changed things up a bit and made the Planetologist Dr. Liet Kynes a woman! I was mildly and I mean mildly disappointed with Rebecca Ferguson's portrayal of Jessica. It was good but not great. Havier Bardem was terrific as Stilgar and Stephen McKinley Henderson's role as Thufir Howatt - the mentat was really good. I thought too that David Dastmalchian's portrayal of the twisted mentat Piter deVries although fairly brief was very well done. I can hardly wait for Part II! We'll see much more of Dave Bautista as "Beast" Glossu Rabban Harkonnen as he really looks the part. Any of us who have read the story already know the outcome but it will be Villeneuve's directing, CGI, the dark imagery etc. That will make it seem brand new!

Ozark (2017–2022)

One of the best dramas currently going!
24 January 2022
Marty Byrde is a successful financial adviser who seems to have made a decision that will change his and his family's lives forever - he launders money for a powerful, ruthless Mexican drug cartel. Marty, in order to keep himself and his family alive comes up with quick, creative ways to keep laundering the cartel's money which includes starting a casino on a riverboat in the Ozarks.

I give a tip of the hat to the cast and especially Jason Bateman for putting together this incredibly suspenseful, fast-moving and very creative drama. Virtually every episode of each season are very well done and have me waiting with tremendous anticipation for the next one!

Fargo: Storia Americana (2020)
Season 4, Episode 11

Follows the typical Fargo "saga".
26 July 2021
Like the other 3 Seasons of Fargo, I loved this one! I like that each season is a new story with different characters and of course a new cast. This season in particular I thought that the actors were as close to perfect for their roles as one could expect. Special mention to Chris Rock (in a dramatic role??), Emyri Crutchfield, Jason Schwartzman and Jessie Buckley. Timothy Olyphant's was outstanding too and I could go on. I wasn't thrilled with the ending but figured I'm not supposed to be - I was however satisfied. I sure hope there's a Season 5.

The Stand (2020–2021)
9/10
Glad I didn't let other's reviews of this affect my experience.
22 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, I have read Stephen King's 1,152 page uncut edition of The Stand 20+ times and loved it! Probably my favourite all time novel. I created my own visions about what each character looked like while Stephen King filled in the rest - how they thought, how they behaved and how they felt. So, the 4 part mini series in 1994 I thought was pretty good (7 out of 10) and they got a lot of the actor selections for each character right. Gary Sines was a pretty good Stu Redmond, Molly Ringwald was a really good Frannie Goldsmith, Corin Nemic as Harold Lauder was ok and Jamie Sheridan as Randall Flagg I thought was below average. Adam Storke as Larry Underwood was pretty good, Rob Lowe as Nic Andros I thought was really good and Bill Faggerbakke as Tom Cullen was excellent. I thought Ruby Dee as Mother Abigail was ok but not great. This portrayal of The Stand based on a number of reviews I read almost had me not bothering to watch this new one but I did. I told myself to go in with an open mind and open heart and also recognized that a new Director and writers were almost certainly going to want to change some aspects of the story and they did. I thought this rendition of The Stand was superb! I enjoyed it immensely and couldn't wait for the next episode! I thought virtually all the actors were perfect for The Stands's characters. The 1978 The Stand novel had pretty much all white characters so it made sense for example in the year 2020 to have some diversity so Jovan Adepo, an African American plays Larry Underwood, Brazilian Henry Zaga plays Nick Andros and Irene Bedard, a Native American woman plays Ray Brenter - they were excellent! James Marsden plays a terrific Stu Redmond, Alexander Skarsgard was an excellent Randall Flagg, Greg Kinnear does a really good Glen Bateman and Whoopi Goldberg was a perfect Mother Abigail! I could go on as several other actors did really good jobs portraying Tom Cullen, Lloyd Henried, Nadine Cross and Harold Lauder etc. Yes, they changed the story a bit, had everyone arriving in Boulder Colorado fairly quickly but then did a great job of back-stories for several characters to show what their journey to Boulder was like. I really enjoyed the story they told about Nick Andros in Shoyo Arkansa which was different than the novel including how he meets Tom Cullen (Brad William Henke was awesome) and some of the others were different too but I think very well done. I gave this version of The Stand a 9 out of 10 because I managed to connect with all the characters and found myself crying several times throughout, deep belly laughs at other times and yelling "Yes" while pumping my fist in the air a bunch of times too. If you have read the novel and want to watch this series, I suggest you do what I did - try to put aside what others (including myself) have said about it, keep an open mind and an open heart and I think you'll enjoy it.

Snowfall: The Get Back (2021)

Snowfall is back to Season 1's intensity
21 March 2021
This episode and quite frankly all the episodes this Season 4 have the same intensity and grittiness that Season 1 had. In this episode Franklin is torn but does the right thin in my humble opinion. These last few episodes gives a white person like me a bit more understanding of what it's like to be a person of colour trying to live, earn a living and conduct business in this world with all the obstacles they face that people like me rarely experience.

Powerful episode!
18 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Snowfall in my opinion is getting back to what made it so powerful and popular in Season 1. Season 4 and this episode in particular is incredibly intense and very believable. Things are heating up for Franklin's childhood friend Leon and Franklin is caught up in a very difficult dilemma.

It's been hard to put aside my prejudice towards all religions, but...
26 January 2021
... once I did, it's been an enjoyable, useful and entertaining series especially this episode. My belief this world would be a much better place without any religion where we put more faith in ourselves and one another rather than the "magic dude in the sky" is actually reinforced by this series and this episode in particular.

Just disappointing
30 December 2020
I was really looking forward to Season 3 and after each of the first 5 episodes I'm thinking "Ok, the next one will be better". I don't know what's happened but this Season 3 is plain boring and it's not getting better.

Good reality show
22 August 2020
Am I the only one who can't stand listening to Andy being so impatient with his wife? My goodness... she puts up with a lot from him. He talks about life in the suburbs as though it's beneath him and that "one can't truly know themselves until they live out in the bush". My guess... Andy isn't very good with other people and he cannot function in society. Anyway, the rest of the show is pretty good, looks realistic and it's really about a lifestyle choice. Living in the city versus out in the bush isn't about one being better than the other, it's about what each of us wants out of life. I suspect a couple of the other people on this show are living so far from society is that like Andy, they find that type of life too stressful as well.

Some good - lots of not so good
23 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Right off the bat I loved the idea of a brand new "alien whatever lands on Earth, we can't communicate with it and we need to visit it's home world to make contact". In episode 1 there's some good ideas but a lot of what I would consider ill-conceived, not well-thought out decisions in the plot. First of all a crew of mostly 20 something years olds? Seriously? Would a NASA or a World Space Agency of some sort send a crew like this to try to make our first contact ever with a new Alien species? No. There might be one or two really brilliant 20 something year olds not in Command positions but mostly 30, 40 and 1 or 2 50 something year olds. Secondly, would this NASA/WSA demote who was the Captain of the ship to 2nd in command and put someone else in charge? Nope. If the original Captain wasn't the person for the job, keep said person off this mission. Thirdly, in real life when the second in command proposes an idea that has an 11% failure rate would it even be considered simply to speed up their off-course journey to shave a few months off their journey? Nope again. The Captain then murders the 2nd in Command? I could continue but you get the point - lot's of unrealistic, stupid things happen just in the first episode and just keeps on going throughout Season 1. I have doubts I'll watch Season 2 but...

Money, money, money!
15 April 2020
That's the primary if not sole reason for making this movie. Money for Disney, money for the producers, directors, actors etc. and of course they think we're all gullible and easily manipulated. Well, some are and lots of us aren't. I'm glad I didn't pay a penny to see this transparent money grab of a movie as it's not awful but it sure ain't close to being good.

Terrible Stephen King adaptation!
17 February 2020
I have read all the Dark Tower/Gunslinger books in the series and I really looked forward to this movie. I figured that with Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey that it was a "can't miss". Wrong! This movie was awful and I could hardly wait for it to end so I could leave the theatre. The writer's tried to take bits of each novel and make it into one story and they failed miserably! I was incredibly disappointed with this movie and I imagine that if Stephen King were honest, he too would express disappointment.
