Scream Bloody Murder (1973)
Woah Black Betty with the bambalam!!!!!
First off the bat this is a ZERO budget production from all points down but, in truth, thats never hurt a movie in my opinion anyway.
This was made in 1973 and you can pretty much feel the influence of certain other movies which had made such an impact from 1968 onwards, it strives for that Last House feel and almost succeeds in some cases. The opening is pretty cool (love that squashed Dad effect!) but the actual storyline seems like its pretty jumpy and zooms along from start to finish, which is where it gets interesting.......
Anyone expecting gore galore better hit the road Jack because what we have by the end is some great scenes of 'Woman In Peril'and, yeah, she is treated pretty poorly but why the hell are you watching a movie called Scream Bloody Murder in the first place if you can't take some FAKE abuse? This film is like watching something on fast forward just to get to the money shot, taking in an ending which recalls both Maniac (1980) and a sublime Carnival of Souls (1962), its a shame people haven't got the gall to make stuff like this anymore because its got more originality than most of the celluloid waste thats forced down our throats these days. Check it out if only for Angus Scrimm in an early role.
The Last House on the Left (1972)
Krug and co............. real family values.
Krug Stillo saved my life along with Weasal and Junior and Sadie too! I don't think this film is as bad as people make it out to be, its violent sure but thats the point, by not shying away from the abuse and hate directed at the two girls it doesn't give the viewer a chance to romanticise the violence as 'only a movie'. Look at any number of films today and you'll see what I mean - rap stars going out and 'poppin' caps in asses' because they mean well in their own way!?!? By allowing the audience to feel repulsed I think Craven did the best thing possible and put forth the ultimate wake up call that violence is real and nasty and that things like this do actually happen.
Bit more gore would be better though, like guts and stuff............ and chicken - fried chicken!
Death House (1988)
Good time zombie fun
This is pretty cool in an 80's kind of way, take 'good' looking main guy and throw him in a hell hole on a frame up, add government madmen, zombies, slime balls and gay prisoners and SHAZAM! You've got a movie!
John Saxon is excellent as always but I think the show is stolen by the Rasta Zombie, I've never seen one of those before. Why is it the secret antidote to these plagues always looks like cough syrup and there's never enough to go around? Prison movies are always good for a laugh and this one is no exception, a great way to spend some free time. Maybe Saxon's time on Cannibal Apocalypse influenced his direction on this, as it really does have an Italian feel as stated by the other review here.
Baise-moi (2000)
Why is it OK for women to make films like this, and they get released basically uncut, but its not OK for men?
First off, the only reason this got 5 stars out of me is that it is pretty groundbreaking. That doesn't stop it from being one of the worst, sleazest films I've ever seen. And thats saying something believe me.
Unlikable characters go on a crime spree and have lots of sex and one of them dies........... big deal. This film contains hardcore sex and very graphic depictions of rape and abuse, the women behind this are artists. Thats why it's SO important (notice the sarcasm here). Its like that eternal question of why its OK for men to sleep around and become studs but women who do the same are branded sluts, I want to see I Spit On Your Grave released uncut.
Unlikable characters, everyones a scumbag - what a wonderful world it really is.
La noche del terror ciego (1972)
Creepy stuff and well worth watching........
This is not a bad film, it's not the greatest movie ever made but it's still a very beautiful film. The very idea of undead, eyeless Knights Templar is quite original and the obvious European feel and appearance adds loads to the appeal of this hard to find gem (Anchor Bay have just released the whole series in a great looking boxset, thanks again you guys!) There is some consternation, however concerning the depiction of both lesbianism and rape in these films, some are quite open in their objections, i'd like to go on record as saying that it is this very PC, yellow belly, kneejerk attitude that makes it so difficult to see a lot of these films. Sure, the lesbian scene seems a little stupid and off putting with all that soft focus but i'm sure if it had been shot by an actual lesbian it would have looked very different, its a MANS idea of lesbians and in Spain in 1971! Cut this one some slack and you wont be let down, just look for the wonderful scenes of the undead knights riding horseback through the night. Creepy stuff indeed.
...E tu vivrai nel terrore! L'aldilà (1981)
One of Fulci's best films
The Beyond must surely rank as Fulci's most accomplished movie, both haunting and atmospheric and extremely violent. The film itself exists within a kind of alternate reality, it twists and turns so much that I know of many people who seem to just label this as lazy film making, but the point is it ADDS greatly to creating the very feeling that is so very important to the overall ambiance.
The levels of gore are high as is to be expected, and appreciated, as one of the four 'zombi' movies that Fulci made it is hard to pick which of the series is his best. It's a shame that Fulci's later work went so down hill with stuff like 'Cat in The Brain' and 'Demonia', truly a genius and i think this film proves that the unique and original talent was very much in his soul.
The bleak and distressing vision of hell will stay with me for ever, as will the immortal words that finish the film itself.
Superstition (1982)
this is out on DVD!!!!!!!!
i picked this up a few years ago on VHS from an old corner shop rental place that was closing down, i was living with a midget at the time and we spent a lot of time watching this. a lot of people i know mention this one as being really good but can never seem to remember the name or where they see it, it IS available on DVD from a small time company called Mondo Cadavo, its pretty no frills but the guy does his own commentary tracks and includes well written linear notes, well worth seeking out. The band CADAV-O-RAMA have a song all about the film and have declared it a Hardgore classic if thats any recommendation for you!
Plague (1979)
strange stuff indeed
its sometimes funny how old crappy movies turn out to be signs of the future, a flu like plague carried by birds?????? who would have thought.......
like Zombie Creeping Flesh, this Canadian flick levels the spread of an epidemic directly at the Powers That Be, and i like it for that. I didn't know this movie was available on DVD and happen to own the original VHS release under the title 'Induced Syndrome', boasting on of the greatest covers of all time - a poor rip off of Iron Maiden's Eddie bursting out of planet Earth, misleading to say the least as I was expecting a zombie film and instead got this. Also a little like Rabid, with the infected woman roaming around passing the virus.
All in all quite an OK waste of hour and a half, i'd save the money for the DVD though and get something else.
