Porcelain Unicorn (2010)
Unexpected
It is so awesome that only six lines can stretch the story so far. This storie is about a German boy and a Jewish girl during the world war. He saves her from Nazi soldiers but he cares that her small porcelain unicorn was broken. So he went to see her again to give her the new one for the first time in about six or seven decades.
It was a very impressive scene that the girl said "beautiful" looking at the symbol of Jewish. And the boy also seemed to have no prejudice toward that.
I thought the story was heartwarming and unique to Germany.
The Gift (2010)
The identity of it
When speaking of unicorns, we first imagine a legendary creature like horse with single large horn projecting from its forehead. In this film, "a unicorn" never shows itself. A gift box or something that is called unicorn is regarded as important. When I got what the "unicorn" means I also understood why the robot, who probably only knew what the unicorn is, ran away even though he sacrificed himself.
Thinking of this things above, this film is very interesting and imaginative. But at the same time there are a few mysterious points. And the most important point, the identity of the "unicorn", was hard to catch for me. So I didn't like it very much.
Gasman (1997)
Life-changing Christmas
The story focuses on a girl who find a fact that her father has another family. The girl dresses up and go out with her father and brother, but on the train rail, join a girl and a boy, whom she doesn't know. And from the girls the remarks the daughter notices she is not the only daughter of her father.
Firstly I thought, why does the father put them together? It doesn't seem to me that is the right time for children to face the reality. They should enjoy the party but looks miserable.
The story is a bit dark and I didn't like it so much. But the camera work is good in the way of implying the complexity of the family. And I like the brother playing with a mini car and sugar seeing it as snow.
High Fidelity (2000)
small laughs
This is the story that Rob, rock music geek and an owner of used records shop talks about his ex-girlfriends. After he broke up with his girlfriend, he starts thinking about why he's always dumped by his ex-girlfriends. Reading reviews of this film, I saw many notes that this film is great. But I feel a little boring because it feels like making me endure the regretful story of a man. I can't help thinking that men tend to dwell on their past.
On the other characters were good, especially I like Jack Black's character. It seems to me that he always steal the show.
I could not get a big joy but it gave me many small laughs.
Three Days in Kamakura (2012)
Feel pain and warmth
This film made me think about the pain of not being able to have children. In the story the wife seems to have some physical problem, so she always looks depressed. On the other hand, the husband behaves positively unlike her. However he's idea of taking a boy, whose parents do not pick him up, and who is coincidentally half-western and half-Japanese show that he is also not happy with their reality.
It was heartfelt that the couple strengthened their bond through the incident over the boy. However I thought it was unreal that they talked about their personal topic in front of the boy .
Ichiban utsukushî natsu (2001)
Summer time flies too slowly
This film is about the change of the high school girl in the summer vacation. She had got wild because of her family problems but by staying with her cousin's family and getting involved with an old lady, something changes in her personality. She is very straightforward and her attitude are quite easily affected by her feelings. Especially she frequently changes her attitudes towards her innocent cousin. This seems too childish for me, so I do not like her. And some bond between she and the old lady made changes in her but when and why did they come so intimate? In our daily lives it often occurs that people become friendly before we know, though. Probably I think I demand reasons too much in stories.
I raise the part I didn't like above, but I liked the music used in this film and the scenery of the countryside. That made me feel relaxed.
The Crush (2010)
Looked real
"The crush" here does not mean squashing nor breaking but falling in love with someone. The main character in this film is an elementary school boy, who has a crush on his school teacher. One day he gives a ring to her ,but later sees her riding a car with a man, who is her fiancé and kissing. Then the boy challenges the man over her.
Common sense tells me that a young boy cannot possibly marry his schoolteacher. So at first I only thought the boy was so pure and cute that he told her his love. But in the last fight scene he turn to be fearful. I could hardly breathe to see that because I thought the gun in the boy's hand was real and he was really about to shoot the man. This film told us that we shouldn't not neglect children because they're children.
Lifted (2006)
Really liked this film
I really like this film. It was very funny from the beginning to the end. But what made me laugh the most was the big teacher alien's attitude. Making no moves to see the small student one looking at him and trying to check whether the bottom he pushed was right, like "this? Or this?" That was very funny. And also I wandered how deep the man fell asleep. No one can keep sleeping when your body is being lit like that. About the structure of this film, the part that the student alien feels for many times even though succeed for a few times was good in making the audience laugh.
Fish Out of Water (2009)
Interesting
This movie is interesting. The lead character is so smart that he finds the way avoid a commuter rush and commutes without stress. But one day, a sexy lady found him and joined him, then other men followed one after another. He looked like a "fish out of the water." How does get back to the stress free commuting like before? At the end of the story, everybody must feel exhilarated.
