Great cast...never got interesting
29 May 2024
The draw to this movie was the cast, David Niven and Deborah Kerr should've had a better plot to work with. I will say, that while I think Niven is extremely talented, he almost seems miscast in this film. One of the best scenes is between Sharon Tate and Deborah Kerr on the roof. Tate and Hemmings are adequately creepy and weird. Otherwise, the premise doesn't invoke fear or even logic. The supporting cast is also terrific with Donald Pleasence, Flora Robson and Edward Mulhare making a good showing but the premise just seems to fall flat. With that cast, they missed an opportunity to make a sensational film. Tired and disappointing.

Not Worth Your time

Warning: Spoilers
Not only do the characters act like moron, (the kids are especially annoying) but apparently no one thought that doing a little research on lions and lion behavior would've been helpful to this movie.

At the end we have more idiotic decisions by the humans and actions by the lion that defy any sense of reality. A rogue lion who attacks the main character over and over but only seems to bite his shirt. A lion would literally go for the throat and rip it out of squeeze til the prey suffocates. But instead we have Idris Alba throwing punches at the lion. It is beyond absurd and incredibly disappointing, to put it mildly.

A few laughs but sinking plot
11 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Of course, this was meant to be a funny romp for the Grumpy Old Men but the only truly funny character was Gil played by Brent Spiner. It seems that half the characters are involved in some kind of con on this voyage so it's hard to pick sides. Dyan Canon looks amazing and it boggled the mind of this viewer as to why on Earth she would choose Walter Matthau over Edward Mulhare. It stretches one's grip on reality, comedy or not. Since they were all cons, the still handsome and debonair Mulhare would have been the hands down choice. Jack Lemmon and Donald O'Connor are good in their roles but overall, this cast deserved better.
