The Simpsons: Homer's Phobia (1997)
Good, but dated
Homer's Phobia should be considered a groundbreaking and influential episode of Simpsons tackling homophobia back when it was still considered a bit of a taboo to be gay supportive. And for that, the episode deserves a lot of respect and appreciation. Especially since censors at the time almost stopped the episode from ever happening.
However, that being said? The episode heavily implies that you need to be flamboyant and effeminate and acting like a stereotypical gay man in order to be gay. Don't get me wrong, John is still depicted in a fairly subdued fashion... but, he's also obsessed with fashion and talking and acting like a stereotypical fashion-obsessed gay guy.
In fact, Marge never even got to know John WAS gay before telling Homer he's gay. Marge thought he ACTED gay and made an assumption, and then just so happened to be right about that assumption.
Now, there's nothing wrong with being a feminine gay guy. Heck, I myself am a feminine gay guy. But I think it's important to show people that gay guys can look and act in all sort of ways, not just the stereotypical ways. They don't even try to break the stereotype that supposedly only heterosexual men go deer hunting, which is... odd.
All that being said, this is still one of the most important and influential and groundbreaking episodes of the Simpsons show. It's just that by today's standards, some of it's aspects can come across a bit distasteful by implying you need to act in certain ways in order to be gay.
Ash vs Evil Dead: Second Coming (2016)
Entertaining, but makes no sense
I'm a really really big fan of Ash vs Evil Dead (and Evil Dead in general). I've loved and enjoyed every single episode of both seasons so far. But this last episode of season 2? It's kinda hard for me to love, because it has a lot of problems.
The previous episode when they travelled back in time suggested they would not ultimately change anything, just thinking they do - but go by the logic of the Terminator movies (minus Genisys) with that they travel back and make what happens in the future end up happening. Yet, this episode makes them change everything. They burn down the freaking cabin and seemingly prevents movies 1-3 and the entire season 1 and all of season 2 of Ash vs Evil Dead up until this point from happening.
Except... it doesn't? Pablo didn't seem to be resurrected from the time travelling as much as with them destroying the Necronomicon, and Ash's dad is still dead, and so are Kelly and Chet and old Ruby. And the town's people still know what happened, and that Ash saved them? But at the same time, Ash's hand grew back when they altered the past (and got cut off again), and the cabin burned down.
Defenders of the episode and developers tell us to "not think about it", and that "time travelling is always confusing". But, at least other time travel stories let us know what current present time the characters live in after altering things. This one doesn't even bother with that.
And what makes it worse to me is that this is a big elephant in the room the developers refuse addressing. I don't even know yet if season 3 will fix this somehow and explain to us what's going on, but I sure do hope so.
The episode is still entertaining, but it really seriously lacks the substance needed. It's just a mess.
