The Days (2023)
Too many shots of people holding phone, staring desperately into space, AND WHERE ARE THE WOMEN?
5 June 2023
I'm only on episode three and enjoying most of this, but have a few bugbears. The slow pace gives me and my husband time to talk about what might come next, what they did wrong and ponder on the dilemmas... BUT why would anyone build a nuclear station so close to the sea in a country that regularly experiences earth quakes and tsunamis????

And where are the women? Are there no women engineers in Japan? There are a couple of females on the background but none of them speak or have any kind of relevant role. The only women that talk are relatives of operators. This happened in 2011!!!

While I enjoy the slow pace, the recurring lingering shots of the main characters desperately staring into thin air while holding a phone receiver happen too often and for no reason. Same for the slow motion shots of people just moving around. If a time for reflection was needed perhaps some shots of the nuclear plant or ANYTHING else would have sufficed.

It's interesting to see the reverence and extreme politeness in Japanese culture, yet the PM (Naoto Kan?) gets to shout at everyone one minute and then act all forlorn and pensive the next, which is a source of bemusement and confusion.

The music score is very good, but as others said, it sounds very familiar, straight out of Chernobyl (which is excellent, this isn't quite on the same level).

Mood (2022)
Had an authentic feel, ended up binge watching
21 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Whoever compared it with Euphoria and Skins totally missed the point. This is about a 25 year old Londoner trying to find her way in life and get over an event from her past. It felt authentic, almost autobiographical. If I was going to compare it to anything, iit would be to "I may destroy you'. It's set in London and it is a modern story which could take place in any big city.

I was really impressed that it was written, starred and sang by the same person. Kudos to you, bitch!!!! Cold and sick 😎

Insecure (2016–2021)
From London to LA: Love it!
23 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a bit older than the show's demographic at 50 - it feels like this aimed at 25-35 - and I think that explains all the sex in the show. Some of the sex scenes are hilarious ("I feel like there's too much momentum" :D :D), at other times they relate to what happens to the relationship (i.e. Spoiler: ejaculation->eye incident) and if it feels like there's too much of it I'm thinking it's because I'm older? But I still vaguely remember what it was like when I was younger, when it was really important, when it's a way of connecting but also of disconnecting. So, most of the time I think the amount of sex is appropriate for the show, because it's such a big part of their lives at that age.

Anyway, sex aside, there's so much more to it. Some of the things that happen could be happening in London or in any metropolitan city - and a lot of it feels familiar: life in the big city, opportunities, gentrification, prejudice, camaraderie, work stress, being broke, loneliness, anxiety, what to do next in life, how to do it... It combines comedy in drama in a perfect ratio.

I love Issa and Molly and their world - I'd love to go out partying with them, I love their honesty with one another, it feels like a real friendship, built over many years. I surprised at how much I related to Issa's way of thinking, her awkwardness but also her clarity & wisdom and confusion. Great job overall!!!! (I just started Season 4 by the way).

Didn't know what to expect but I kept watching it...
11 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Something about the photography sucked me in and the characters were interesting. I read the reviews here after watching the first episode and didn't hold much hope for it, but, well, I ended up caring about the main characters (the adults not so much). Somehow it worked. Did I mention the photography?

I understand Fraser's hate for his mother, I had to move around a lot because of mine and it was very heartbreaking making friends and then having to move again. Being a single child didn't help either, having to start from scratch again was bewildering and yes, I deeply resented my mother for it. The way he acted out made me think maybe he's in the autistic spectrum?

The ending was... unexpected? In the end I realised I had been watching a disguised romcom without even knowing, I guess that was quite a twist!!!

Great acting, writing and directing. I watched one episode and ended up binge watching all four episodes in one sitting. Love the ending too.

Mad Sad & Bad (2009)
Mad, Sad & Bad with cheese!
14 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
What a great little film! I hadn't heard about it before watching it, and had no idea what it was about. I picked it on account of liking two of the main actors. And I wasn't let down.

The story itself is about families, people trying to find happiness, and the usual stuff, but told in a very charming and amusing way.

And if you like cheese you'll like this film, this song, which is composed during the film, comes into its own right at the end: "When I first met her She was eating cheddar. I thought it was unfair So I gave her Camembert.

I got her on her knee, Just like a piece of brie. I tell her, I said no. No, no, no, pecorino.

There's too much bliss In the holes in Swiss. And a little BabyBel Keeps me from hell. A tiny bit of brie Makes me so happy. Emmental, feta, Make it so much better."

This film is probably not suitable for under 35s (although of course there's always the exception). It's full of a realism and the characters have a depth which is hardly seen in mainstream movies.
