The reason I gave two stars (and not one) is because of the striking cinematography that is excellent. Also I loved Dafoe, both his playing and his makeup. That's where the good bits end. This is a strongly ideological movie and I hate this kind of movie. Regardless of the content. I feel like I am being preached to. Secondly it failed in its objectives. For example it tried to portray a sexual revolution, in particular by women. But frankly I can hardly think of anyone more asexual and anticlimactic than Ema Stone in that role. If anyone felt the slightest movement in their underpants, watching this movie, they get a free brownie from me. Many say this movie was soft porn. As far as I'm concerned this movie is an ode to the asexual. Perhaps it is an excellent representation of confused ideologies that seem to be roaming around in abundance, that achieve the opposite of what they intend. Sexual revolution that leads to the asexual. Good heh??
Generally speaking the movie is a shallow ideological gimik dressed in wonderful cinematography. And its far too long too.
