The Good Shepherd (2006)
...and that's good is it?
3 hours? It felt like 6! Being a huge De Niro and Damon fan, I had no hesitation in departing from my hard earned £6.80 and entering the cinema in the assumption I was about to witness a theatrical masterpiece. It started slow but I was sure the pace would pick up as the film progressed. "Once upon a time in America" was close to 4 hours in length, yet I loved every minute of it. I didn't mind the pace being slow because I was sure, if it remained slow there will be some kind of twist at the end which would give the audience a little enjoyment...but no. It's still OK, It doesn't matter that the film is slow and there is no twist as long as the breathtaking acting is there!...but no, it really isn't. I can assure you that Matt Damon's' expression/emotion doesn't change throughout the entire movie. This is not his fault, he is a talented actor, maybe the person he's playing is supposed to only hold one emotion but that really is not entertaining to watch.
After the 5th hour I decided I'd try and catch a bit of sleep, this is when it really was effective. If you suffer from insomnia, my guaranteed cure is this film. I didn't sleep for long because of the lollipop sticks being thrown at my head but this was only because of my fellow cinema goers disinterest in the film also. I wasn't alone! We all hated it.
Save yourself money and do NOT go see this film! If you like this film you are quite literally insane!
Bloodsport (1988)
Look at it like this!!!
Being a film watcher that looks for great acting, i surprised myself when i enjoyed this film.
Being more a film fan than a martial arts fan i was expecting to be writing a bad review for this flick. No one can deny that van damme is a great martial artist, but his acting is so so the opposite.
You have to look at it as a martial arts film (which it is) and accept the stunning fight sequences (especially the final fight scene which was very well choreographed) the film offers.
Yes, people will talk about how bad his acting may be, but what people forget is that he is a martial artist more than an actor. Movies are just the way he can express his great skills to an audience.
I recommend this film to any martial arts fan but not so much to anyone looking for a compelling dramatic, mystical thriller because you will be disappointed.
On all it's a basic, pure, martial arts film that i feel is underrated.
Narc (2002)
One to see!
I stumbled across this film by accident in the misfortune of losing my sky remote. I soon found out that losing my remote was in fact one of the best things i had done that day because i got to see NARC. I had never heard any mention of this film before but decided to sit and watch it never the less. In the first few minutes i was gripped ( as i was throughout the rest of the movie)
When i watch a film i don't look at it the way an average film watcher would. I look at every aspect of the film, cinematography, soundtrack, acting, choice of actors and so on...you get what i mean. I look for flaws in movies (as bad as this sounds) but with NARC i struggled to find any. The acting by both Jason Patric and Ray Liotta blew me away. Even the supporting actors were amazing.
This film has twists. It'll have you believing one thing and then moments later you're back in the dark again...I love films that can do this.
It's one of those film that i wanted to tell everyone about after i had seen it. So i hope that expresses how good i think this film is! :)
So basically what i am saying is watch this film!!!
Hope this was helpful!
Revolver (2005)
Unique
Okay, Why give this film 9/10 you may be asking?
It's unique is my answer!
I love films that make you think and this film certainly has the mental stimulation i was after. Maybe to much...but still!
On the way home, all me and my mate talked about was revolver, trying to unravel the many mysteries of the film and whether they actually could be answered. After about an hour into the conversation i realised "this is what he wanted" (and by "he" i mean Mr Ritchie) he wants you to go away from the film and actually have to think about it. There aren't many films that can do that, so this is the reason for such a high rating!
With snatch being my favourite ever film i was initially disappointed to realise they carry no resemblance, but then concluded this to be a good thing as i don't want the same film over again... i want something new, something an audience hasn't witnessed before! and this IS IT!!!
When i heared that Mr Andre 3000 was trying his hand at acting i thought "oh no, another musician trying to cross into acting" and was expecting terrible things. I have to say, i was quite astonished by this mans acting abilities....one to look out for.
So my advice...for what it's worth, go see this film but with low expectations as i did. Then you cannot be too disappointed, you may even love it like me, or maybe i'm in the major minority there!
before you go see this film, ask yourself this.....do films need to make sense? If YES, stay at home If No, go have fun! :D
