Coming Out (1989)
a film that is rather an opening medium
"Coming Out" is the first and last film ever made in East Germany that dealt with the issue of homosexuality--those who come out of the closet and those who are still under a chaos of mentality due to the dictating of society. I believe that this film is something to be remembered and to linger in our heads. It is successful in a sense that its exposing a side of the gay world brought us to empathize and sympathize with the characters' circumstances. It is a film that gives us a wider understanding of how the ones we call the "third sex" are being driven out from a treatment of the normal world--for they are deprived with the subtle eviction and downward push of society's gaze. I may not be an advocate of the third sex but it is the understanding that was brought to me by the film that strikes to rating it. I'm giving it an 8.
Das Kaninchen bin ich (1965)
A film locked up to be special.
The bravery to tackle an issue that has even brought the risk of being locked up is what I mostly admire about this film. Although it took quarter of a century before it finally reaches the public, its being locked up seems to have preserved the radiant significance of its history--that, "for its struggle," it passed through several revisions of its script along the path of censorship. The actors' performances were magnificent and deserves a remark such swell. The treatment of the film, despite the seriousness of the issue tackled, remains not wholly burdened. What's noticeable to me are the matches used in the film to shift an event from space and time to the next. "The Rabbit is Me" is a truly precious work that lead a trend in the GDR documents. Special, 'tis! I'm giving this film an 8.
