The Bubble (2022)

The only thing it has in common with humor is the release day.
30 March 2022
Watched this film at Paris theater in NYC aka the Netflix Theater. Without spoiling much, I will just that this film is not very funny. Contrary, it's long, it's got too many characters, the storyline is very vague and confusing, and the jokes are not there. Judd Apatow was bragging about finishing the script in 8 weeks, and honestly it really felt so.

So far so good

A well done cartoon criticizing materialism. Great visuals, good sound design, and acting work.

It's not fully thriller/suspense as many claim, only the first story has the elements of the genres, whereas the other two stories have a more light hearted motif.

In my opinion, Netflix should have developed this as a one story film, it would have played out much better.

One time watch.

Did not have high expectations, maybe just some because of the cast, budget and director attached. Film turned out to be silly. People speak with grotesque Italian accents, and it looks or sounds even more weird when you hear a British Italian accent versus American English Italian accent. It throws off right away, thank god they did not gesture a lot in this film, other wise it would have been way too caricatured.

Second comment is that the story is not unfold fully. Feels like some moments were rushed, especially in the first part. Because of this, you I did not connect to the characters well enough, and for the rest of the film I did not care what was to happen to them. The story overall is not very catching, but it least it's based on true events, so you can write it off.

Thirdly, the whole Gucci aesthetic was not showed enough. You would think this film would contain fashion elements, luxury, big money, but from the set design standpoint it looked pretty regularly. This film could be as well about any other family that had inner mind games. It felt like the production did not exploit the theme of Gucci well enough.

I guess this is it. It's not the film I would rewatch, but it was worth just this one time while snacking and sipping a drink.

A bit bad.
28 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Interesting concept, but bad explanation of it and remarkable execution flaws.

If time flies on the beach, you ask yourself why the food is still alright after supposedly 10 years in the bag, or kids grow fast when parents barely change. You ask yourself why one character changes the color of her pupils (Maddox teen vs Maddox old), why the baby dies from the lack of attention, but again adults feel just fine after 7-10 years of no nutrition. You ask yourself so many basic questions instead of enjoying the film, because the director-writer did a bad job.

A Quiet Place (2018)

5 for effort

Warning: Spoilers
This film is not that bad as other reviews say it. I enjoyed some of the moments; however, the clumsy contraction of the universe kept annoying me all the time. I will start with good things: 1) Visuals.

Visuals are, of course, great. Everything that goes from cinematography to set design to lighting to editing. It was all good and pleasant to watch.

2) Acting.

Acting is also good, although it felt sometimes that John Krasinski tries to be overly dramatic. I get that this is a horror and all. But you got a family in these horrible situations, and perhaps humor or some easiness is the only way to keep the family sane.

3) Sound. Sound is the key theme in the film. Sound design is also top in this film. Especially, I liked the concept that the viewer hears nothing at all when the camera switches to the POV of the dead daughter. Something similar was used in the recent "Sound of Metal" What is not good is the world of the story. We know very little about what happened and how it happened. There are so many questions that people want to hear answers for, but we get no context except for making a sound equals death. If the screenwriters worked out the whole universe beforehand, I think it could have been a very intriguing mini-series. Because the rules of the universe are not very clear, many plot holes have been presented in other reviews.

At some point, the viewer starts to do the writer's job and ask themselves a question like "Why would they set up a bunch of speakers around the house to use them as a distraction?" "Why they keep walking barefoot all the time in the country?", "What happened to the government? What about survivors?", "What if you attract them to one loud sound and then blow them up?".

A lot of similar apocalyptical stories focus on survival, on the community, on fighting back, and trying to get back to normal life. In the case of "A quiet place," all the main characters are concerned with is replacing the lost child and fixing the daughter's hearing.

Another annoying thing was this night where it all happened. The father is aware of the fact that his wife is about to give birth, takes on another kid, and leaves the place for a continuous-time. The wife knew about the nail, just leaves like that two times. The monster which is 10 feet tall can just disappear in a foot level of water. The family survives the sound haunting monsters, and it just happened that their daughter is deaf... The emotional arc between the daughter and dad makes no sense at all. So, parents let a deaf child take care of a little super energetic child in a world where making a sound means instant death? And then kind of shun her for more than a year? And let her in the basement for dinner, but also not letting her in the basement for something else? And why they are all barefoot all the time?

Oh god, I actually started my review with giving this film 7/10, but downed it to 5. It is still a well made work, it makes you scared sometimes, which is the whole purpose, just turn on your critical thinking until you finish.

From riches to rags.

Second season is a complete failure. I don't know what happened to the writers of the first season. This show had infinite possibilities to create any story on earth with any settings, but just lost it. The stories are complete, most of them open-ended, most of them just don't have anything in them. The concepts/setting are overused. You got MadMax/Star Wars with Snow, dystopian noir/blade runner with the baby killer, Wall-e went wrong with the grandma and her vacuum, but nothing original on this show. No conflicts, no resolutions, no unique concepts, just nice graphics and wasted 2 years of work.

Just a flat picture.

To be honest, a lot of things in the film don't make any sense. A lot of randomness in the script, what I mean that a lot of transitions that push the story forward seem weak. Also, the film is an action, I get it, but most of the times it's violence for the sake of violence which is turning off for me. Another minus is using too much score, because the ordinary fight scenes bore too quickly, and music seems like a way to draw attention.

A bit predictable
6 April 2021
Good cast (obviously), the story is a bit predictable. The archetypes are easily guessed - bad Russians/good brits and Americans.

It's worth it just to see once, but not anymore.

Hard to do a road movie, and the crew could not.
20 January 2021
Let me start with this. The film has a great cast, and crew, but the story does not work. It is a typical road set in the civil war period. The Character of Tom Hanks has nothing special about him except for his profession. He is just a regular everyday newsman, and it's quiet boring observe his life. So, the question was "how can we show a traveling entertaining?". The answer is we do a couple of obstacles, which the heroes are gonna get through any way (cuz it's a Tom Hanks movie). Frankly, the heroine looked interesting in the beginning. She is a white Indian, but this fact is barely used throughout the whole film except for one moment. The pace of the film is very slow, the characters and setup of the story is bleak, the film lasts almost 2 hours, and after first 40 minutes you just want to leave prematurely. Solid 6. Because of the cast, cinematography of the Wild West, and set design.

Why to copy?

Frankly, I was glad to hear about this show on a podcast from Justin himself. But the very first 10 minutes in the show, I started to ask myself what is the reason behind creating this show. This is show is so alike Rick and Morty that I could help but compare. The main heroes Korvo and Terry are pretty much an alien version of Rick and Morty. You have a very smart science obsessed dude (who does not belch, but takes pauses in speech), and you have a chill simple guy as a side kick. The whole thing is of course based on science and things getting out of control because of that science. The other two other kids remind of Morty and his sister, but reversed - the guy is mean, the girl is naive. In general, it was an ok show to spend the evening, but it was not a revelation for me like Rick and Morty back in the days. We have already seen the writing style and visuals in Rick and Morty, nothing new. Just makes me wonder how this show and participation the key people from Rick and Morty are gonna affect production of Rick and Morty itself. Thanks.
