Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
some good bits but underwhelming over all
Spiderman Homecoming is about an unpopular teenage boy called Peter Parker who is secretly the superhero Spiderman. The only person who knows about his secret is Tony Stark who made his suit.
Spiderman is played by Tom Holland who plays the role of Spiderman really well. He was very believable and realistic and very funny at times. He was definitely the best part of the movie for me, i think he will be remembered as one of the best Spidermen. I also liked the fact it wasn't the normal Spiderman origin story that everyone already knows about. How his uncle got shot and that made him want to make a difference. That would just be boring. Instead they told a different story but it was still technically an origin story, the film is about Peter wanting to be the best superhero and Tony Stark stopping him and saying he's not ready. The main villain is The Vulture and is played by Michael Keaton who's good and compared to marvels other villains is better, but not anything all that great. There are parts were he's menacing but never all that scary.
Now i'll talk about the main negatives. To be honest I actually just thought that the script for Spiderman Homecoming was just a bit poor. There were some jokes that worked but there were also some that just fell completely flat at times. A lot of the good jokes came when Tom Holland was playing Peter Parker, but when he was Spiderman a lot of the quips he was saying felt more cringey then funny. Another problem i had with the film was that although Peter was well written and the vulture also had a good character, almost all the other character were completely uninteresting, especially his love interest who was really boring and also the bully Flash who was just really annoying.
Spiderman Homecoming had pros but I felt that the cons out shined them and I was pretty underwhelmed by the film and would say you should just go watch the Sam Raimi ones with Toby Maguire.
Children of Men (2006)
Almos all good
Children of Men is set in the year 2027 where women have become infertile so no baby's are being born and the human race is going to die out. There were parts of Children of Men that are incredible. The premise, most of the acting and some action scenes that have you on edge make this film great. This film uses lots of long takes that were at times very impressive and at time you didn't even notice it. What I really liked was that the main character, who was played by Clive Owen, could have been a hero who would save the world from this dystopian future, but instead he was written as an every man who was very relatable which made the movie much better. The fight scenes were also done extremely well, there's one in a car that looks like its all in one take and is absolutely breathtaking. Children of Men takes lots of inspiration from dystopian fiction like 1984 and Blade Runner and has parts that feel like they could fit into either of those story's as well as the tone being very similar.
Children of Men does almost everything right. There are just some slip ups in the story. There's one part in the middle of the film that didn't feel as realistic as the other parts and some characters made decisions that were a bit stupid. That only really happened for a bit and then i started to get completely sucked into the story again
If your a fan of dystopian future then you'll love Children of Men and also if you just like really good movies, just keep in mind that it's not perfect.
Wonder Woman (2017)
started out weak, ended amazing
Wonder Woman is about a young woman who is part of a tribe called the Amazons who live on a island created by Zeus away from the rest of the world. But one day a World War Two American soldier washes up on the shaw of the island and tells them of the terrible war going on she decides to go with him back to the war and fight.
For the first act of this film I wasn't very into it. I thought that the two main characters were good but nothing to great and there were some attempts at humour that fell pretty flat.
However there was a part were a few new characters got introduced and suddenly the film got way more interesting. The new characters were very funny and charming but at that point the already existing character became more interesting. The relationship between the young girl or Wonder Woman, or though she's never referred as that in the film, and the American solder, played by Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, felt really realistic and they had really good chemistry. The villains, of which there are about three, two were kinda bland but still mildly interesting. The other one was I thought was really cool and well done and performed. It also did a really good job of making it seem like you were in a World War Two setting. Apart from the line "well that's neat" all the dialogue sounded like it was from a person from 1940's. Now lets talk about the best part of the film, the action. I'm not kidding when I say that I think this film has some of the best fight scenes I've ever seen in a film ever. The film has about three big action scenes which are all amazing, but it doesn't action non stop all the time, it's balanced out by character moments that were really good as well. The action was so well shot and unlike other films with lots of action I never got bored at all. It was so cool and exciting and I would recommend Wonder Woman to anyone who's a fan of really exciting and well done action movies with good character.
High School Musical (2006)
Surprisingly good
High School Musical is about a teenager at a school were he's known as the basketball kid who is the best at basketball and only plays basketball. then one year a new girl comes to the school who he met over the Christmas holidays and performed a duet with his life will change and he'll start to have a life for theater.
The teenage boy is played by Zac Efron who is outstandingly terrible. Some of the line of dialogue he delivers is so poor I was nearly in tears laughing. And that is the reason I watched this film, to have a laugh and enjoy myself. There are definitely parts of High School Musical which are painfully awful. The songs, as this is a musical, are very bad. They use a lot of auto-tune which mostly makes them sound robotic. If you watch this film and manage to take it seriously then that's an achievement as parts of High School Musical are so dumb and badly acted that you will cringe.
Having said that there are parts of High School Musical that are a bit weird, a bit off, a bit... good. Yeah, I actually found parts of this film to be really good. It's definitely not a great film but some of the actors in it are really well performed. For example Ashly Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel as the Evens siblings are performed in an over the top way that is found really well done, there were times were it got a little bit annoying but for the most part they managed to balance it out really well. Olesya Rulin plays a shy pianist who isn't in the film for very long and even the scenes she was in she didn't have many lines but i thought she was really really good. I said she didn't have many lines but her performance wasn't really about that, it was all about reacting to thing and she did it in a really good way and as soon as you saw her on screen just from the way she dressed and the way she walked you could tell what kind of a character she was, unlike other character were is they were part of the skater group they would just give them backwards hats and make them look all cool and rad. Also she always seemed really she and reserved when she was just walking around but when she played piano she became all bright and confident.
High School Musical has scenes that are great because your laughing about how bad they are and scene that aren't actually bad at all.
Laid in America (2016)
terrible and nothing but
Laid In America is about two British guys who are about to leave the school they go to in America but there's one problem, they haven't had sex yet, OH GOD. This movie stars Casper Lee and KSI. If you've never heard of either of them then let me explain, neither of them are actually actors, there both Youtube stares, are you seeing a problem yet. The acting in this film is some of the worst i've ever seen in my life. I did sorta buy the two characters as friends but y probably just cause they are in real life, when the enviable conflict come in and they start fighting its so unbelievable. Also this movie is marketed as a comedy, and in comedy's your meant to laugh, i didn't laugh through this whole film. possibly the worst thing about this film was that after it had ended the two characters hadn't changed at all. They didn't have any ark, they were both really annoying at the beginning and they were really annoying at the end, if not more. There are no redeeming qualities about Laid In America, its a complete waist of time. The people who made it obviously don't that in order to make a good film you have to do more than just point a camera at people and have them talk and say unfunny jokes. I've tried to find people who like this movie and the ones i have said "its so funny" i said "why" and they said "well not really but i really like Casper Lee" Im not kidding i actually had that conversation with someone.
I would recommend Laid in America to no one. It's not even so bad that is good, its just bad really really bad.
0/10
Whiplash (2014)
Great but i have tiny nitpicks
Whiplash is about a young man who wants to be a drummer but when he gets moved to a higher class the teacher is a bully who will do anything to his students to get a good show. The teacher is played by J.K Simons who is absolutely incredible. His performance is intense and will have you fearing for the students but at times he can also be so cruel that its funny. That might sound like a bad thing but it definitely isn't. the music is also really good and you got see the young man, played by Miles Teller, get better at drumming as the film went along. Miles Teller also gave a very great performance, most of the time he was on screen I forgot he was acting he was so realistic. There were lots of shots of him drumming were it focused on his face and you could see how much he wanted to be the best drummer ever no matter what.
Although Miles Teller gave a very great performance after the film had ended i didn't really feel i knew a lot about who his character except that he wanted to be a drummer, that may have been intentional to try and show that he didn't want anything but to be a drummer but I felt that his character wasn't all that fleshed out. Also there was a love interest in the beginning of the film who was really good but she was only in about two scenes and i wanted to see more of her. Also (and this is a really small nitpick) there's a dinner scene in the film that was probably my favorite scene in the film but it was way to short and I wanted it to be longer.
I recommend this film cause it has amazing performances and is also incredibly well directed and well shot.
Swiss Army Man (2016)
fantastic in every way
I didn't watch this movie for a while. i'd heard the plot and it sounded terrible but one day I was with my friends and we saw it and watched it. I wont describe the plot cause it will probably put you off, just trust me, this film is amazing. First of all Swiss Army Man is one of the most beautiful looking movies i've ever seen. Its just so gorgeous, every shot was a treat to look at. Another amazing thing was the score. It fitted the film perfectly and is so full of energy and joy, just like the film its self. Probably the best part of the movie though were the two leads. I'm a big fan of movies with small casts and Swiss Army Man only has two character who are both incredible well performed by Paul Dano and Danial Radcliffe who are both excellent. Its also really funny and parts will have you laughing like hell but other parts will have you on the verge of crying. The humor is so well done, It takes jokes that will usually make people cringe and feel dumb and nothing more, and with amazing writing become incredibly funny and relatable. Swiss Army Man gets everything right that a movie can and yet some people seem to hate it. I really don't understand why people dislike this movie, I think it's completely perfect in every way but that's just my opinion.
District 9 (2009)
incredibly good but too much action
District 9 is about an alien space ship that starts to hover over Johannesburg. Its told as if its a documentary which makes the film feel very realistic. Almost all of the film is seen through security cameras or as if one of the character is holding a camera. it also often cuts to a person talking about the events in the film, sometimes hinting at the ending or talking about things to come in a very vague way which works very well and keeps you wandering about whats going to happen. Both the aliens and the look of the alien space ship are incredibly cool. A big part of the film is that it is actually about racism. The aliens, which people call prawns are treated badly just cause of how they look. All of the films characters are well performed and well written. i would say that most of the movie is absolutely perfect. The problem i have with District 9 is that the last thirty minuets are almost all action. The action its self wasn't done badly, it was well shot and you still felt for the characters during the action, but compared to the rest of the film were it was about how life would change and how people would react if something like this were to happen it wasn't as good and i started to get a little bored. I would still recommend it to pretty much anyone. District 9 has a great story with a great central lead and has a lot to say about race. The action near the end gets a bit repetitive but is still very enjoyable to watch.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
This is the best movie ever!
It took me too watches of this film to settle on my opinion of it. I knew i liked it when I first watched it but i had to watch it a second time to find out if it was the greatest movie every made, and i've settled on an answer, and that yes. I could say this movie was incredible in every way and should be worshiped, but that would be doing it an injustice. Edger Wright uses screen transitions and shoots fight scenes will make your mouth drop open, there's not a single scene in this movie that isn't interesting or one that won't make you laugh. The dialogue is so amazing and clever and there's no jokes that go to waist. I always love it when a comedy movie or TV show takes every single chance they can to be funny and Scott Pilgrim definitely does. the way characters talk, the way the camera moves, the sound effects, the fight scenes, the first thing you hear in the entire film will make you laugh its incredible. Not only that but every single performance is great. You can tell that everyone on set was having such a good time and they really got into there roles. Anna Kendrick as Scotts sister, Kieran Culkin as his gay room mate, Chris Evens gives his best performance as an arrogant actor (wonder how he got into character), and of cause Michal Cera as Scott pilgrim himself. I understand that this movie may not be for everyone, it's a little weird and might come across as style over substance but for me, no movie i've ever seen has come close to being as good as it, its the best movie ever made.
The Prestige (2006)
An amazing film you should definitely see
This is an amazing film. Its a film that makes want to see it again instantly after you've first seen it, partly cause you want to see if everything makes sense, and also cause of how spectacular it is. One of the things I loved about this film was that it never felt like either Huge Jackman's or Christian Bale's character was more important than the other. Both of them are equally as interesting and well performed. The way Christopher Nolan doesn't tell the story in in a typical way and instead decided to jump back and forth from different parts in the story was a genius move. He did it in a way so that it was confusing but never too confusing, how he managed to do that is beyond me. It also never focused too much on the actually magic and was always about the rival between Huge Jackman and Christian Bale. All the performances are great as well. the only bad thing was Scarlett Johansson's British accent which was pretty awful.
