Beasts of No Nation (2015)
good and accurate
This movie does a very good job of showing the brutality of other countries and the way that they treat their children. Throughout the movie very little is held back in the sense of visually demonstrating the harsh conditions. As they follow agu on his journey not much seems unrealistic like in some movies where certain situations are blown up and made bigger than they could ever be in person. This is however not the case in this movie, the directors obviously did their homework and looked into real event similar to the one depicted in the movie. This situation does seem very similar to the "KONY 2012" situation that happened years ago. All the smaller details like the initiation of agu and what he was armed with and the conditions he faced when fighting were spot on compared to actual accounts of child soldiers in many third world countries. Overall this movie does a very good job at staying interesting as well as have many historically accurate aspects to it. I would recommend this movie to someone looking for entertainment or someone looking to gain more knowledge about the growing issue with violence and child soldiers in Africa.
The 33 (2015)
I hear Bolivians taste like chicken
The 33 Film Review
The 33 was one of the better movies based off true stories that i have seen this year. The story of the 33 is one of perseverance, hope and sheer will. 33 miners became trapped in a mine over 700 meters below the ground. There is little hope that they will be rescued, because no miners trapped in a collapse have ever been saved. However, a new minister hears of the collapse and will not stand idle by as they die. He travels to the site of the collapse and demands that they attempt to rescue the miners, as well as offer all the resources the government can supply. This leads to the miners finally being rescued after almost 70 days.
The director, Patricia Riggen, does a very good job of illustrating what happened to those 33 miners as they were trapped. Riggen as a director has been all over the place with the types of movies she's directed. She has went from romances to teen drama comedies. Then she made this intense very emotional and action feeling film. Despite the limited experience in this style of film, the quality did not suffer. The budget for this film was $26 million and it shows. Real equipment and sets that look real because the were added to the realism of the movie. Most of the scenes in the mine were filmed in a mine in colombia. The rest of the other scenes were actually filmed in chile.
The film obviously was targeted at a specific group of people. The mining industry was made out to look negative in the movie, by letting the miners work in unsafe conditions and risk being trapped or killed.this is the second recent movie that targeted large companies for putting their workers in danger. This makes it quite obvious that the director and people involved in the movie were not fond of the greedy owners of mining companies. Especially the ones that put their workers in direct danger because of the risk of losing money.
This film in my opinion was very accurate in the information used for the film, because of the facts that the miners the movie is based off of are still alive, this gave the filmmakers a very reliable source. Some scenes are dramatized or fabricated to add to the intensity, but overall the realism in this movie remains unencumbered. All in all this movie was exciting to watch while also being very informative and sends out the message that the filmmakers wanted to convey. The director never got too extravagant with the special effects and also still made it fun to watch. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone interested and a good, informative film.
Allende en su laberinto (2014)
not good
Allende
The movie "Allende" was a movie about the Chilean Revolution. The director of this movie, Miguel Littin, is a chile native and was a supporter of Allende which means that he had some bias while directing this movie. His 70 year directing career leads watchers to believe that he is a very experienced directors that will produce a high quality movie that is enjoyable to watch. This isn't totally true considering the storyline was confusing and unrealistic at times.
Mr. Littin tried to show people that America was wrong in trying to overthrow or supporting the chilean army in overthrowing Allende. He disagreed with the Americans and the choice we made on assisting chile in killing allende. Allende was not a bad president in the eyes of many president but had ideals much too close to communism. This meant he was the US's enemy and we had to do something about it. Littin disagreed with what we did and shows his distaste towards us through the film.
Throughout the film allende stops multiple times to have conversations and arguments with other characters. In this aspect the movie is very far fetched. It makes it seem like all the fighting stops when he starts talking. This and the fact that the building was on fire but wasn't spreading was unrealistic. The explosions are also very unrealistic. Biased is also very prominent in this movie showing the anger with the United States. There is a scene where a young boy dies in Allende's arms and this is blamed mainly on the US because of our involvement. There is no proof that this actually happened and can be made up to show how angry littin was with the US.
The actual filming was alright but some scenes were very confusing and hard to follow. There were random silent spots and random fires. The story line was hard to follow at times but overall wasn't the worst movie i have ever seen. Also, it never shows how he died, whether he was shot or shot himself.
