Le capital (2012)
a modern-day parable
What most people don't get is that the title of this movie is the title of Marx's "Das Kapital". All characters in this movie are allegorical and allude to ideas in Marx's book. Mao Tse Tung, the ironic use of the social revolution to lay off people, the overly caricature relationship with Nassim (as all other relationships) make reference to relationships on an institutional, economical and political level. If you watch it this way (without overdoing it) it will make far more sense than just a simple story. Agreeing with the ideas is a whole different ball game, but the movie is overall deeper than most people seem to acknowledge.
The Island (2005)
What an excuse for merchandising!!!
It can't always be about art. Sometimes people just have to make some money. I can definitely understand that. WHAT I CAN'T UNDERSTAND is how two of Hollywoods better actors (though I personally don't think much of Ewan McGregor... just can't get the hype) can even consider the possibility of participating in such an awful, huge commercial. Because that's what it is: IT'S A VERY LONG ADVERTISEMENT! Huge crashes, a lot of merchandising and NO PLOT AT ALL!!! I do have to acknowledge the brilliant work of the people that marketed the film. They put all of the better scenes in the trailer. Those are the real pros! The sound editing was fantastic, too, by the way.
