Cyrano (2021)
Well done
Having seen both the musical version in NY and this, I prefer the film. They edited the numbers of songs, which was a good idea. The scale of the film helped tell the story more effectively. If you're not willing to accept Cyrano as a musical, though, don't bother with this. I would have liked to see Roxanne's, De Guiche's, Raganeau's and Le Bret's roles expanded a little more, but I do believe keeping the film to 2 hours was a solid choice. I get it. I did miss hearing more from Roxanne, as we got in the stage musical. I could have kept watching though. As Dinklage emerged from the audience in the play, I really enjoyed the same spirit of his entrance and proper sword fights here. I found the close ups more effective as well, as Dinklage has such a gift for expression. The scene with the soldiers is the most lasting song in my opinion. People have complained about Cyrano being somewhat less witty in this version, but I didn't miss the excessive inflated language. He's frankly more likable without so much of it. Originally, I'm not sure Cyrano's nose is even really so large, or is it mostly a metaphor for ego? Yet, ridiculing a person over a medical condition is certainly wrong. It's a different approach to the story. Therefore Cyrano should be played accordingly.
