Argylle (2024)
Lacking manners
If I was going to describe this film in one word it would be twisty, there are more than the fair share of "gasp" moments in the film.
It seems every act has one which i found to be a little grating near the end of the movie after so many, regardless despite the shear number they all pay off I just feel they didn't need so many as the story moves along nicely anyway.
The only other negative point on the film was the cgi and effect some of it is very cartoony and wasn't that well polished in places and looked cheap.
With those points out the way the story is fun and a joy to see unfold. I'll be looking forward to the next installment in the MARV universe as their way of doing spy films is unique and fun.
Love at First Sight (2023)
Every 99/100 people will...
A modern love story with an analytical twist. It manages not only to keep you engrossed throughout, but really pulls you through a wide range of emotions! Even the more robotic members of the community will struggle to not feel their hearts watching this.
Sure the story isn't entirely authentic, there will be moments and stereotypes for all to see... but it doesn't ruin this picture and is very tasteful. I loved the settings the entwined stories as each minute passes.
There aren't many films of this genre I tend to personally hold in high stead but this joins a short few, I will now have to slot this in to the watchlist every year on the build up to the holiday period should it stay on Netflix until the end of time. And maybe I'll even try to watch it on the 21st of the month.. if I'm not to busy trying to become a statistic myself
A lovely story well told, if you've read this far you might as well watch it, be brave!
Haunted Mansion (2023)
Haunted something or other
I'm just going to get to the point with this review, I didn't hate the film but like many that came before.. I'm not sure I'd watch it again.
I watched the trailer to this film in the cinema and was sold! I thought Disney had itself a new intellectual property
I was wrong and unaware it was a reboot, the film looks good the effects are nice! But the time dragged and the characters sort of never really gel nicely. There were plenty of cheap laughs if that's your kind of thing and a small amount of emotional scenes and thoughts to provoke.
None of it however really makes up for the pacing and how we end up at the end it's like 2 hours was the figure they had to get no matter what, I didn't find myself giving the film too much thought when I left, not even a quote
View with an open mind.
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
GREEN LIGHT
Quite simply the best movie in the franchise so far. I appreciate the realism to the type of threat posed this time around, it really does make the odds seem against Ethan.
There isn't a particular need to watch every film in the series leading up to this, unless you want to know peoples names before they're introduced. I see this as a positive as there isn't an excuse or reason against missing this film.
The film is thrilling throughout, you will feel every bump in the road and you will feel the weight on the protagonists shoulders.
My only disappointment Is the wait for the conclusion to this story. I have no idea how the stakes can be raised, I only hope they will be... until then I hope there aren't any spoilers or stunt videos I think we should all go in blind for part two.
If you like cinema you'll enjoy this.
About Time (2013)
The lion, the witch and the time traveller
I refuse to give this a perfect score for the pure reason, I have not enjoyed a film or felt this good after a film in some time. And I didn't want to jump straight into the perfect tens of the world! However, I may clench my fists one day and rectify this rating
This film has class and oozes charm, it may tell us some things we already know.. but it presents them in such an engaging way you cannot ignore the lessons it teaches
I couldn't have enjoyed the story or it's characters more, what a job they all did.
This isn't my usual genre of cinema, but I'm happy I made the decision to watch this film. It's a shame we never get to relive the firsts in life I hope I feel as fondly towards this film later as I do now
You've nothing to loose watch it.
In from the Cold (2022)
Won't knock your socks off but does the job
I've just finished this season over the course of three days. It's not the best spy thriller around but it does a good job and the story keeps you entertained enough.
There are a few characters/performers who I feel let this down a little bit, they seemed to lack any personality and came across wooden. Another thing that irritated me a bit was the relationships between some of these characters was a bit cliche and forced and it really showed!
My highlight in this series were the scenes set in the past. I would've liked more time spent in that era as it had a laughs, real heart felt tender moments and real shock value... every time it flashed forward I couldn't help feel disappointed ,I wanted more!
Without spoilers this is a good watch and you can finish it quite quickly. So if you're at a loose end or can't fathom getting through your lists, let this distract you for a bit.
Gotham Knights (2022)
Just save your money people
I don't think I will struggle to fill the character quota on this one so here goes...
This game doesn't follow the same cannon as the Arkham series but it is most certainly in its shadow, the pre release footage and gameplay displays made this look very promising and I was looking forward to playing a sidekick (having always preferred Robin to Batman growing up) in summary I was optimistic I even pre-ordered!
Now having played it for over 15hours now, I feel compelled to review. I simply hate this game, if dc ran a vote to have this game live on or be bludgeoned to death by the joker I'd be voting by phone mail and app to ensure this would be beaten to a pulp.
The simplest mechanics suck, you can jump around like a loon but if there's a credit card on the floor you will hit that gigantic barrier instead of jump over it and don't you dare try and climb a wall you're next to you want a couple steps first, there's no block for combat so when you dodge sometimes your character will just decide to stay put and take damage, the same weirdness happens with the animation for grab attacks, if an enemy swings for you whilst you grab attack they can hit thin air and damage you
The vehicles feel slow and awful playing as knightwing I find he can at times let go of the glider which has been great when travelling over water you can't swim in, there aren't riddler trophy's which would be a plus but they give you more things to grind and find which almost add upto the same total, which is too much personally plus they add character challenges to keep you grinding to see what you'll get besides xp
The graphics considering they're "next gen" are not very well utilised and I would say Arkham knight still takes the crown in this category!
I will still play this game to see how the story goes but once I'm done like this review I won't be revisiting it. Don't make the same mistake either don't buy it or wait for a massive discount if you can't resist the dc universe.
Black Adam (2022)
Wishing this champ stayed at home
This simply won't be a film I pay to watch again, I had probably higher hopes than warranted due to my love of the dc universe and growing up idolising The Rock.
The story was not great it felt like they were skipping pages the way everything was being cut and put together, the action scenes were a bit hit and miss and were a bit samey.
The mid credit scene was probably the best couple minutes of the entire thing... which is sad because you remember that any likely follow up from it will likely be made by the same people! And I don't trust them with superman.
Films like this are ruining the comic book movie genre in my opinion, just don't expect much.
Bullet Train (2022)
Non Stop
This film is hyperactive but that's by no means a negative... I left entertained and in lighter spirits.
After introductions are made the story is delivered like a Japanese bullet train, it only ever stops for the intended amount before propelling you to the next destination!
This has everything an action/thriller desires and the cast and crew have delivered splendidly
Will be picking up a physical copy.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
It's good enough I guess
I'm a little bit disappointed, this franchise is usually a mix of story and dad joke, but this entry just feels a bit too silly for me.
I didn't really appreciate how many cheap laughs this film aimed for, I would say the story suffered at the cost of it
The Gorr origin felt rushed or more of a recap! It's as if it assumed we had read the Thor God Of Thunder series and knew about him.
I think for this to be your introduction to the character is a kind of disservice!
After the shaky start Christian Bale really does a great job with the role, he appears quite strong and a little terrifying!
I Do think a little montage of him maiming Gods would've been good for the character/story as well
Is this the worst Thor movie.. No
Despite this when I saw "Thor will return" i wasn't and am still not hyped. I'm just hoping it's more of a supporting role.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Tense
After watching this today in the cinema I can only say I left entertained, it is a great follow-on from the first and is by far the better of the two.
The sequences involving planes have been aced.
I'll happily watch this again, really looking forward to seeing the extra's and seeing how it was made!
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)
Marvellous
This film gives back with interest, I leave the cinema today thoroughly entertained and
re-invested in a universe I can only dream of being part of.
Each scene keeps the story flowing very well despite the changes of tone, this isn't a film you will watch once. There's something for everyone here and if like me you're more susceptible you will feel plenty over the 2+ hours!
Enjoy.
Morbius (2022)
The living vampire
There's not terribly much to say about this film.
I appreciated the artist styling of Morbius moving around and the effects .. the next thing I liked was it's didn't get censored so the vampiric moments were there to be seen.
Other than these points it's really bang in the middle of being good and bad.
Palm Springs (2020)
You have one sentence
This movie will make you feel lots, you will laugh get annoyed maybe even tearful watching this; despite you resisting otherwise... just put it on and enjoy the next hour and a half you wasn't doing anything anyway! (Long breathe)
Home Sweet Home Alone (2021)
Don't open this present
This film was a bit of a struggle, it seemed desperate to fill itself full of subliminal messages and values at the expense of a decent story.
By the time the battle plan takes form.. I really didn't care! Which was a shame because
there were some great people in the cast, the ending is quite sweet but all the same I'd look elsewhere when choosing a film over the holidays.
Boss Level (2020)
Ohhh deja vu
Yes there's some plot convinces but the hero certainly doesn't have plot armour, the story is well thought about and plays out well enough, there's some funny moments, thoughtful emotional segments and some pretty good action
Overall I'm pleased I gave the streaming service original a watch, despite the ending which for me was it's weakness can't give half's so rounded upto a 7.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Chose the wrong screen
This film looked and promised to be a good thing not award winning but thrilling all the same, however this was a large disappointment, objectively there were some bits I enjoyed but the vast majority made me leave the cinema feeling hard done by for paying to see it.
Honestly I know it's peoples jobs but I'd suggest waiting until you can stream it to watch. Find something else whilst this is out.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
For Autumn
From start to finish this film is captivating! The sheer scale of this film should not put you off streaming or purchasing a physical copy if we are lucky enough to get one.
The film follows on from the previously released movies (prior to the first release) and as a result brings new depth to the characters already known and fully flushes out the new additions enough to know their motivations.
I like how you're made to feel each tonal shift and exchange on screen no matter how subtle.
It is my opinion that this film far succeeds anything WB and DC have brought together since the dark knight.
Please Warner Bros finish this arc!
Spree (2020)
Follow me I'll follow back #
This movie is bite sized and fun! Each character works really well, and despite the synopsis
it's very light hearted and will have you let out a few laughs.
You honestly can't help but enjoy it with each passing minute
The 2nd (2020)
Please don't make a 2nd
I kept watching where In places it was so awful it was funny. This is a novelty action film come for the very cheap thrills, poorly coordinated fight scenes and questionable... everything else!
Tenet (2020)
Fingers crossed for a quick physical or stream release
So I've not long got in from watching this thoroughly confusing yet entertaining film! My immediate reaction to the credits is "I will need to see this again" I'd comfortably say I'll need to watch this again for a second and third time, once to absorb the story again with a vain knowledge of what's about to happen and to enjoy it once more, the Other for reading subtitles some speech is muffled when masks are used I'd like to know if I missed much where my ears failed to pick up the words.
All in all a great film, plenty going on but it never fails to keep your attention. To say anymore would involve spoilers I'll leave that to someone else.
The Lost Boys (1987)
I've no idea
I'm sure I'm not the only one who has seen stills from this movie or seen it mentioned in Positive lists about Cinema, and thought this looks cool!
However I find myself sitting and wondering how? Why is it much beloved and mentioned?
Sure the character designs are great, even in this day in age many years later I have to admit .. I want to dress and look like a member of this group of young vampires! I'd even bleach my hair in vain to try and look as cool as Kiefer Sutherland did, but fanboying Aside I didn't like this film.
I came into this only seeing the poster and a few stills and the 7 star average review, I knew nothing about the story or the genre of this film, which if i could class it myself I'd say it's a goofy horror.
The film doesn't really flow or present the story well, and it just clips back and forth until you accept what's happening all the time wondering what's going on?Visually it's rather dated now, but it still does a great job and I can't fault that at all! I did enjoy the camera work sets and effects, and for that reason alone I'll sit in the middle of the 1-10 scale, if you read this and then want to watch the film set your expectations low, and use it as inspiration for bringing back 80's fashion or the bare minimum a kick ass Halloween costume don't come for a compelling story.
