Squid Game: The Challenge (2023)
THIS IS A GAME SHOW! NOT SEASON 2 OF SQUID GAME!
Season 2 of Squid Game is coming eventually. The amount of low reviews due to people thinking this is season 2 of the original show or just simply rating it low because they're mad season 2 isn't out yet just makes me sad for the world. Are you guys really that daft?
Look, you don't have to like reality/game shows. Maybe this show isn't for you. That's fine. But there's really no need for all of the bad reviews just because this wasn't what you expected. Netflix never advertised this as season 2 of Squid Game. It has been advertised as a reality game show spinoff ever since it was first announced. It's not the fault of the producers that you didn't do your research first. If this isn't for you, then simply don't watch it. Go rewatch season one of Squid Game or one of the many other options Netflix has instead. You guys are really just making yourselves look stupid.
I, for one, really enjoy trashy reality TV and game shows, so I've really been enjoying this little reality spinoff to bide my time until season 2 is released.
Fear Street: 1994 (2021)
Scream Ripoff?
A lot of reviewers are calling this movie a Scream ripoff. Since when was Scream about a witch that cursed a town? That's what this movie is actually about. The killers are just supernatural henchmen doing the witch's bidding. The only part similar to Scream was the opening scene, which makes sense since it was an homage to Scream. Clearly that is a word that is not in some peoples vocabulary. The killer with the sack on his head is also a nod to Friday the 13th (part 2).
With that said, this movie does have its faults. It feels like a modern day movie pretending to be 90's. I love 90's music, but cramming a different song into a scene every five seconds doesn't make it more authentic. I also find it hard to root for the protagonists when none of them really come across as likable.
Even so, I still found this movie entertaining, and I'm looking forward to parts 2 and 3.
Fresh, Fried and Crispy (2021)
A fun, enjoyable food show.
I see that some reviewers are criticizing the fact that the host does not have any culinary expertise. I think that's part of what adds to the enjoyment of this show. It's just a guy trying out some delicious meals and enjoying every moment of it. I find that relatable. I personally don't really care for food shows where the hosts are overly critical while eating food that someone like myself, who grew up on spaghetti and instant ramen, would kill to be able to eat. You don't have to be a food expert to know if something tastes good or not.
I also like the format of this show. The host visits three different restaurants in a particular city, and then he chooses which restaurant and meal was his favorite in the end. I kind of make a game out of it and try to guess which one he will choose.
Overall, this is just a fun, laid-back show to watch. Might I suggest having some food or snacks handy though because this show will make you hungry.
3 from Hell (2019)
Not for the masses, but die hards will love it.
I have seen every Rob Zombie film, and there's something about his style that keeps me coming back for more. He has released some less than stellar films, like 31, but I definitely feel he made a nice comeback with this one. His films featuring the Firefly family are his raison d'etre basically. The Devil's Rejects was such a strong film that I don't think anything he ever does will top that, but he did what he could with this one. This is definitely not a film for the mainstream masses, but I think die hard fans of Zombie's movies will enjoy this.
Captain Spaulding/Sid Haig was meant to continue his character arc in this one as part of the "three from hell", but unfortunately just weeks before shooting, he became too ill to work. Rob was able to get him cleared for just one day of shooting to at least have him in one scene in the movie. Rob had to completely re-write the script right before they were to start shooting, so considering the circumstances, I still think he did a great job.
Enter Richard Brake as Foxy. He is the new character that will fill the Captain's shoes. Now, he's no Spaulding, nor is he as interesting as the other two characters. Still, I enjoyed having a new character and getting to meet yet another member of the Firefly clan. It was actually kind of funny watching him try to fit in with his sadistic half-siblings. His crimes (prior to this movie) were "two bit crimes", as Otis states. You can tell he's trying to compete with, but also impress, Otis throughout the film. The film even jokes about him being somewhat of an outsider when Baby and Otis refer to themselves as "the two of us" and Foxy says, "What am I f------ invisible?"
Otis is still pretty much the same character in this one as he was in Rejects. Baby, however, has changed pretty drastically. After years of solitary confinement, she has gone totally crazy. She speaks nonsense and even hallucinates. While I appreciate what Rob was going for, I do think this was a bit over the top at times.Thankfully it becomes a bit toned down as the movie goes on. She really does become the star in the second half.
This film is nothing like House of 1000 Corpses, but it is quite similar to the Devil's Rejects, while still maintaining its own vibe. Some people have been complaining that it's too much like Rejects, but if it had been totally different, they would be complaining about that too. You just can't win with some people. Personally, I think this was a great follow up. It was extremely fun seeing the Firefly clan back in action and causing destruction. I didn't want the film to end and it leaves me wanting even more.
Return to Cabin by the Lake (2001)
Not as good as original, still worth a watch.
Sequels hardly ever live up to the original. This definitely proves true in this case. However, if you're a big fan of the original than definitely give this a watch. Although the camera work is lacking, Brian Krause's character is annoying, and the plot is clique, it's much more funnier than the first and that is what I find entertaining about it.
Don't see this movie expecting the same performance as in the first film. Quite frankly it's a bit different. Rather than sitting in his cabin writing screenplays, Stanley is off in Hollywood trying to direct his dream project, Cabin by the Lake. This movie has a much different feel but it's still great to see Stanley back in action.
I'm giving it a 6 out of 10.
